Abstract

Background: Historical botanical manuscripts, such as Linnaeus's Botanical Notebooks, often suffer from visual degradation that reduces legibility, and high-resolution digitization alone cannot fully restore their clarity.  Purpose: This study aimed to improve the visual quality of these manuscripts using a Fuzzy plugin-based image processing workflow in Fiji (ImageJ).  Methods: The research methods include image preparation, enhancement, binarization, and evaluation. Results: Based on the experimental results, the enhancement process showed substantial improvements in all metrics. Entropy values decreased from an average of 10.78 (original) to 5.65 (enhanced), indicating a 48–50% reduction in visual randomness, while the morphological filter retained essential structure with entropy in the range of 6.32–7.48. Edge density decreased sharply in the edge detection stage from 0.99 to 0.28 to 0.35 by extracting only dominant contours, while the morphological process maintained character structure with high stability (0.98–0.99). The contrast also increased from 0.89–0.98 (initial) to 0.97–1.00 across enhancement, morphology, and binarization processes, indicating significantly improved foreground-background distinction. Conclusion: This study shows that the proposed approach, particularly the morphological operations, adequately improves clarity while retaining textual and illustrative features in the manuscript. To further maximize the restoration and preservation of additional scientific texts, future study is suggested to use machine learning-based adaptive enhancing algorithms and perceptual quality assessment.

Abstract

The integration of local wisdom into science learning is a global pedagogical trend that leads to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 4). Local wisdom serves to make scientific concepts contextual, meaningful, and culturally relevant for students. The challenge of contextual implementation can be addressed through interdisciplinary approaches such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), which serve as a bridge between local wisdom and education. This systematic literature review (SLR) modified with Bibliometric Analysis aims to map the global research landscape on the integration of local wisdom and STEM in formal science education from 2014 to 2024. A total of 155 articles indexed in the Scopus database were analyzed using Bibliometric analysis tools, including VOSviewer, Microsoft Excel, and Datawrapper. The results show an increase in publications post-pandemic, driven by the urgency of advancing SDG 4 and the need for adaptive learning innovation. Geographically, research is concentrated in the United States, Indonesia, and South Africa, with global collaborations indicating this issue as a transnational agenda. An in-depth review of 21 inclusive articles reveals a predominance of qualitative-exploratory approaches. Subject distribution indicates a strong focus on General Science Education, Environment/Ecology, and Biology. Furthermore, research is predominantly focused on higher education and junior high school levels, while high school and elementary school levels remain underrepresented. The study's conclusions highlight the central role of STEM as a bridge in integrating local wisdom.

Abstract

The paper reviews the application of culturally responsive pedagogy as a means of inserting the element of Thai local culture solely in the Primary Intensive English Program (IEP) in Narathiwat, Thailand. The qualitative descriptive design was used, and data were gathered by using classroom observations, semi-structured interviews and documentation. The fieldwork took place during the months of July and comprised of three classroom observations, and three classes of primary students, using various materials and various students. The participants for interview were three IEP teachers and three primary students who were chosen according to teacher suggestions to guarantee direct interaction with culturally encoded instructions activities. Findings indicate that the Thai cultural aspects, including local narratives, everyday settings, local words, and routines based on the cultural context, were integrated by the teachers in an attempt to promote understanding and involvement. The research comes to the conclusion that the implementation of the Thai-only cultural content by means of culturally responsive pedagogy enhances student engagement, reinforces the contextual knowledge, and provides a feasible way to apply the model to EFL classrooms in the Southeast Asian cultural settings.

Abstract

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to compare the effectiveness of guided inquiry learning using worksheets (SW) based on Virtual Lab (PhET) and Real Lab in enhancing students’ critical thinking skills in physics learning. Method: This study employed a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent pretest–posttest design involving two experimental classes in a public senior high school in Surabaya during the even semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. A saturated sampling technique was applied, in which all 11th-grade science students were included as the research sample. The first class used SW integrated with PhET simulations, while the second class used SW based on real laboratory activities. The instrument used was a critical thinking skills test developed based on Facione’s five indicators, and the data were analyzed using gain score analysis, paired sample testing, independent sample testing, and effect size analysis. Results: The findings showed that both experimental classes experienced significant improvement in students’ critical thinking skills after the implementation of guided inquiry learning, with no significant difference found between the two groups, indicating that both approaches are comparably effective. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in its direct comparative design, demonstrating that both virtual and real laboratory modalities can equally support the development of critical thinking skills and provide flexible alternatives for physics learning in schools with different laboratory facilities.

Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of ECOVIAR (Ecosystem via Augmented Reality) learning media in improving elementary school students' Computational Thinking and scientific literacy skills on ecosystem material. Method: A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group design was used in this study. A total of 60 fifth-grade students participating in the experimental class and the control class were used as the research sample. The experimental class was given treatment using ECOVIAR media, while the control class underwent conventional learning. Data were collected using a validated long-response test to measure Computational Thinking and scientific literacy. Data analysis was calculated using a normality test, a homogeneity test, and an independent sample t-test. Results: The findings indicated no significant difference in the initial abilities between the two groups (Sig. > 0.05). However, significant differences were found in the post-test results for both computational thinking (Sig. = 0.002 < 0.05) and scientific literacy (Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05). It is concluded that students taught using ECOVIAR media achieved significantly higher learning outcomes compared to those in the conventional learning group. Novelty: The development and utilization of Augmented Reality media in learning specifically designed for the ecosystem of learning materials with a focus on improving Computational Thinking and scientific literacy is a novelty in this study, because it is still rarely studied simultaneously in elementary school expansion.
