Abstract

The State Palace of Siak Sri Indrapura, indeed has a lot of priceless cultural heritage objects as a reflection of the glorious history of Malay in the past. In addition to palace relics, there are other historical sites that have no less high historical value, such as the Syahbuddin Mosque, the Tomb of King Kecik, and the Dutch Barracks and many others. The Dutch colonial in historical records as one of the western nations that colonized Indonesia for quite a long time. It is undeniable that the Malay kingdom centered in Siak Sri Indrapura was also the territory of the Dutch at that time. Evidence of the position of the Dutch in the Malay Archipelago is the establishment of a Dutch military barracks located on Jalan Benteng Hulu, Mempura District, Siak Regency. The location of this Dutch barracks is right across from the center of the Siak Sri Indrapura Kingdom which is only separated by the Siak river. Prison is a term for a Dutch building complex whose function was as a place of protection and defense for the Dutch army. In the barracks there are several types of buildings consisting of dormitories, offices, armory, logistics and prisons. Inside the barracks there is also a prison with a size of 2-3 meters with a capacity of 4-8 people, to detain Indigenous people, especially the people of Siak who are against and disobedient to the Dutch Colonial. Now the Dutch prison not only functions as a cultural heritage but is also transformed into a beautiful tourist destination. Concerns began to arise, that in the future the community would only regard the Dutch barracks building as a mere symbol, without trying harder to be curious and learn more about the history behind the establishment of the building. Based on this, the authors are interested in this research as a learning resource of Local History with literacy study and data collection techniques used are observation, literature study and documentation through data analysis based on analysis and comparison of various existing data.

Abstract

Riau Malay is a vital part of Indonesia’s oral heritage, reflecting the socio-cultural identity of the Riau Malay community. In everyday interactions, Riau Malays frequently use allusive language as a means of politeness and as a reflection of cultural values. These linguistic expressions facilitate respectful communication and serve as a tool for character education. This study aims to redefine the role of Riau Malay figurative expressions as more than just linguistic tools, but as fundamental components of politeness and ethical communication. Additionally, it examines how these linguistic traditions can be preserved and integrated into higher education to foster character development, particularly in instilling values such as integrity, empathy, and respect among university students. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to analyze figurative expressions in Riau Malay. Data collection included documentation of traditional linguistic expressions and interviews with cultural experts and educators. The analysis focused on the role of allusions in social interactions and their contribution to shaping ethical behavior. Findings reveal that Riau Malay allusions are deeply embedded in cultural communication, serving as markers of politeness and carriers of moral and ethical values. These expressions reflect virtues such as humility, respect, and social harmony, reinforcing positive character traits among speakers. Incorporating Riau Malay figurative language into higher education has shown potential in strengthening students' cultural identity and ethical behavior. Interviews with educators revealed that students who engage with Malay linguistic traditions develop a deeper appreciation for local wisdom and improve their interpersonal communication skills. This study underscores the importance of preserving and promoting Riau Malay allusions as a means of fostering character education in higher learning institutions. By integrating these expressions into academic discourse, universities contribute to cultural heritage preservation while instilling ethical values in students. Future research should explore the long-term impact of structured linguistic programs on moral development and identify further ways to integrate traditional linguistic wisdom into modern educational frameworks.

Abstract

Local history is often marginalized within the grand narrative of national history, resulting in the underrepresentation of regional cultural identities in the collective memory. This condition contributes to the low level of students’ historical consciousness rooted in local experiences and wisdom. This study aims to critically analyze, evaluate the relevance, and formulate a model for integrating local historical heritage into history learning in order to foster historical awareness, cultivate reflective attitudes, and promote the decolonization of knowledge through the application of critical pedagogy. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The subjects consisted of 6 history teachers, 5 traditional leaders, and 45 high school students, while the research instruments included interview guides, observation sheets, and document analysis formats. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, and analyzed using thematic triangulation techniques to ensure the validity of the findings. The results show that the integration of local history can transform students’ roles from passive recipients into active meaning-makers, strengthen historical consciousness, and create space for critical reflection on dominant historical narratives. The study concludes that history learning based on critical pedagogy can serve as an effective strategy to address the marginalization of local history while simultaneously reinforcing students’ cultural identity. The implications highlight the importance of developing inclusive curricula and transformative pedagogical practices that are relevant to local cultural contexts and enrich the theoretical discourse of critical pedagogy.
