Abstract

Mothers' knowledge and attitudes in treating burns are inadequate. Burns, if not treated immediately, will quickly cause complications in children under five such as dehydration and scarring. Burns are one of the most common injuries in children and adults, and the 11th cause of death in children aged 1-9 years. This study aims to determine the knowledge and attitudes of mothers and toddlers regarding first aid for burns. This research was designed with a cross-sectional design, and examined 105 respondents obtained through total sampling technique. Research data was collected through questionnaires. Through research, the level of knowledge of respondents was found: in the good category it was 43 people (41.0%), in the fair category it was 29 people (27.6%), in the poor category it was 33 people (31.4%); and the level of attitude of the respondents is: in the good category it is 91 people (86.7%), and in the fair category it is 14 people (13.3%). Through the results of the research, it is known that the level of knowledge and attitudes of mothers is in the good category, but some mothers still have knowledge in the fair and poor categories. It is hoped that health workers provide counseling and education about first aid for burns, so that the public, especially mothers with toddlers, can treat burns to their children.

Abstract

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and coronary heart disease are diseases that have several common risk factors, one of which is age and smoking habits. Research conducted by Enriguez et al. reported that CHD patients with COPD had a significantly increased risk of death after 1 year compared to patients with COPD. without COPD, meaning that finding the right diagnosis and appropriate treatment for CHD patients can improve the patient's quality of life and possibly reduce the mortality rate in CHD patients. outpatient treatment at the cardiology outpatient clinic, Haji Adam Malik Hospital, Medan. Results: After examining the history, questionnaire, and post-bronchodilator spirometry, the proportion of COPD patients in CHD patients was 27.50%. Conclusion: This study of the proportion of COPD in patients with coronary heart disease is quite high as much as 27.50%, so it is necessary for clinicians to carry out pulmonary function examinations in CHD patients, especially those who have risk factors for COPD so that clinicians can determine the appropriate management for the patient.

Abstract

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a significant health issue with high morbidity and mortality rates. However, risk factors for COPD, particularly in cases with type II respiratory failure, are not fully understood. This study analyzes factors influencing the mortality rate of COPD patients with type II respiratory failure. Methods: This observational study used a cross-sectional design, analyzing medical records of COPD patients with type II respiratory failure treated at H. Adam Malik General Hospital, Medan, from November 2021 to September 2022. A total of 42 patients met the inclusion criteria. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and inferential tests using the Chi-Square test and multiple logistic regression to identify the most dominant factors. Results: Among the 42 patients, the mortality rate was 50%. Variables such as gender, age, number of comorbidities, smoking habits, and history of exacerbations were not significantly associated with mortality. Patients who did not regularly use inhalers had a 19-fold higher mortality risk than those who did (P=0.004; OR=19.79; 95% CI=2.67-146.99). Length of stay was inversely associated with mortality, with each additional day reducing the risk by 0.77 times (P=0.011; OR=0.77; 95% CI=0.63-0.94). Conclusion: Routine inhaler use and length of stay are significant factors influencing the mortality rate in COPD patients with type II respiratory failure.

Abstract

Background: Malnutrition is a serious problem in patients with COPD, it interferes with normal skeletal muscle function, with reduced muscle mass and decreased respiratory muscle strength and endurance. The purpose of the study was to determine the incidence of malnutrition based on BMI and SGA in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at the Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Medan Teaching Hospital. Method: The research design is an observational analytic, from November 2023 to March 2024. The study population was COPD patients who sought treatment at the Pulmonary Polyclinic at RSCPL with a total sample using the consecutive sampling method of 91 people Assessment of BMI by measuring TB and BW of patients when they came and assessment of SGA with a questionnaire Data processing using SPSS using descriptive statistics by displaying the IMT and SGA frequency distribution tables. Result: The results of this study found that most patients were categorized as underweight, namely 28 patients (30.8%). The majority of SGA classification as underweight/moderate nutrition "SGA B", namely 50 patients or (54.9%). Conclusion: We found that the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) questionnaire is very influential in detecting patients with COPD who are malnourished to reduce respiratory muscle decline, and relapse of exacerbations.
