Abstract

Research on the antibacterial test of dragon fruit peel extract carried out by Anggraini & Harris (2017) shows that white dragon fruit extract is able to inhibit the growth of epidermal Staphylococcus bacteria with the lowest concentration, namely 25%, producing an average diameter of the inhibition zone of 13.7 mm, while for the highest concentration, namely 100%, it produces an average diameter of the inhibition zone of 17.7 mm. To determine the more effective antibacterial effect of white dragon fruit peel extract, the research continued to the fractionation stage to separate compounds based on polarity level. The solvents used are water which is a polar solvent, ethyl acetate which is a semi-polar solvent, and n-hexane which is a nonpolar solvent (Yohanes, 2020). Based on the description above, researchers are interested in conducting research on testing the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract and n-hexane fraction of white dragon fruit peel (Hylocereus undatus) against Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria.

Abstract

Skin that is prone to bacterial infections requires proper care using products containing antibacterial agents. One potential alternative is kaffir lime leaves (Citrus hystrix), which are known to contain antibacterial compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the formulation of liquid soap containing kaffir lime leaf extract and to determine the optimal concentration for inhibiting bacterial growth. An experimental laboratory design was applied, and the antibacterial effectiveness was tested using the disk diffusion method against two test bacteria, namely Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Statistical analysis was performed using One-Way ANOVA, followed by Scheffe’s post-hoc test to identify significant differences among treatment groups. The results indicated that the liquid soap containing kaffir lime leaf extract exhibited good physical quality and met standard parameters, including organoleptic evaluation, pH, viscosity, and foam height tests. Antibacterial testing showed that the highest inhibition zone against Staphylococcus aureus was observed at a 15% concentration with a zone diameter of 18.28 mm (strong category), while the highest inhibition zone against Escherichia coli was also at a 15% concentration with a diameter of 19.03 mm (strong category). The One-Way ANOVA results showed a significance value (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference among treatments for both bacterial species. These findings suggest that liquid soap formulated with kaffir lime leaf extract, particularly at a 15% concentration, has strong antibacterial activity and potential as an effective skin care product. Further studies are recommended to evaluate safety, stability, and long-term effectiveness.

Abstract

Acute Respiratory Tract Infection (ARTI) remains a major infectious disease in Indonesia, significantly affected by inappropriate antibiotic utilization, potentially increasing bacterial resistance. This study aims to evaluate the rationality of antibiotic use among ARTI inpatients at Dr. Moewardi General Hospital, Surakarta. Utilizing a quantitative, retrospective descriptive design, all medical records of ARTI inpatients from 2023 to 2025 meeting the inclusion criteria were included as samples (total sampling). Data were collected using structured forms and processed using Microsoft Office and IBM SPSS Statistics 20; analysis was performed descriptively following Gyssens' criteria. The study found that although most patients received correct antibiotics with respect to indication (94.7%), drug type (94.7%), dose (100%), and timing (100%), only 34.2% received antibiotics for the appropriate duration. Rational antibiotic use by Gyssens' method was found in only 34.2% of cases. These findings highlight the high rate of duration errors and emphasize routine audits and educational interventions. It is concluded that, despite strengths in dosage and selection, duration of antibiotic use remains a challenge for rational therapy.
