Abstract

Aceh is the only province in Indonesia legally allowed to implement sharia law across all sectors, including the tourism industry. This study aims to analyze factors influencing Muslim-Friendly Tourism (MFT) in Aceh. Specifically, it examines the direct and indirect relationship between MFT with travel intention, destination image, and tourist attitude. Data is gathered through a questionnaire survey among 150 respondents that were selected using the convenience sampling method. To explain the tourist’s travel intentions, this study develops and tests a multiple regression analysis using the extended hierarchical linear modeling. Seven hypotheses were proposed regarding the relationships between MFT, tourist attitude, destination image, and travel intention constructs. The empirical results from the structural model suggest that MFT, destination image, and tourist attitude significantly influence travel intention; destination image and tourist attitude are the perfect mediators in influencing the MFT on travel intention to Aceh. These results have the implication in improving the promotions of tourism destinations in Aceh and developing more effective halal tourism positioning strategies for Aceh in particular and Indonesia in general.

Halal awareness among international tourists can strengthen or weaken the relationship between halal image, attitude and tourists' intention to visit tourist destinations in the area. Efforts to increase foreign tourist visits can be made by developing strategic steps through the optimization of roles. For example, the government should conduct promotions, provide education, and ensure environmental cleanliness. Entrepreneurs should promote Sabang Island through social media and collaboration with the travel, provide cleaning the facilities, and build prayer rooms. The society needs to understand Sharia behavior and be able to communicate in English through training and education programs, and also needs to keep the environment clean.Research limitations/implications –This study focuses on efforts to increase the number of foreign tourists in Sabang, Aceh's. The research can contribute to developing superior Sharia tourist destinations in Sabang in the future and consequently increase foreign exchange earnings from tourism.Novelty/Originality –The novelty is the development of Sabang as a premium sharia tourism destination in Aceh. Unique efforts were made by increasing halal awareness and approach optimalization role uses foreign tourists’ perceptions. Contributions from local governments, entrepreneurs and the community are needed to increase interest in repeat visits by foreign tourists.

Abstract

Objective This study intends to quantify the impact of tourist risk perception, tourist hygiene, and safety perception on the travel intention of tourists who visited Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar, Aceh Tengah, and Sabang, Indonesia, during the COVID-19 pandemic.Design/Methodology The purposive sampling method was used to collect primary data from respondents planning to travel to the specified destinations. 157 out of 175 distributed questionnaires were gathered. Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) was employed to test the hypotheses. Results Tourist hygiene and safety perception significantly influence travel intention. Tourist risk perception significantly influences travel intention. Tourist risk perception does not moderate the influence of tourist hygiene and safety perception on travel intention.Research limitations/implications The study's findings suggest that governments of tourist destinations should ensure the availability of adequate facilities and infrastructure to promote travel intentions, particularly focusing on hygiene and security aspects. Limitations may include using purposive sampling, which might limit the generalizability of the results to a broader population.Novelty/Originality This study provides valuable insights into the relationship between tourist risk perception, hygiene, and safety perceptions on travel intentions during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically in the context of Aceh's tourist destinations. The findings highlight the non-moderating role of tourist risk perception in the relationship between hygiene and safety perception and travel intention. This contributes to the existing literature on tourism and risk management during pandemics.
