Abstract

Due to its complex and unique geological tectonic system, North Maluku is prone to tsunami hazards. The cause of the tsunami is likely to be a megathrust earthquake. Although there are few casualties and only localized tsunamis, they significantly affect the region's stability. One of the areas recorded by the Indonesian paleo tsunami database on 28 June 1859, when a strong earthquake occurred in the Maluku Sea with a magnitude of 7, was Sidangoli Bay, with a tsunami wave run-up of 10 meters. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate the run-up and velocity of tsunami waves to mitigate tsunami disasters. The calculation method uses mathematical equations with a Python program combining various parameters. The data processing resulted in tsunami modelling showing the run-up value and tsunami wave speed in Sidangoli Bay, South Jailolo. The tsunami wave propagation speed reached 80 meters/second, and the tsunami wave height reached 28 meters. The run-up and velocity of tsunami waves in Sidangoli Bay are significant and may destroy anything in their path.

Abstract

The integration of mobile-based gamification applications in education is crucial for enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes. This study analyzed the effectiveness of the GaMALaMA application, a mobile gamification tool, in improving students’ earthquake disaster mitigation awareness (EDMA) in Islamic junior high schools. An experimental research design with a pretest-posttest control group approach was employed, involving 55 students from a state Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) in Ternate City, Indonesia. The results showed a significant improvement in EDMA among students who used the GaMALaMA app in addition to science textbooks compared to those who used only textbooks. This improvement was attributed to the incorporation of game design elements, such as points, challenges, levels, time constraints, rules, and leaderboards, which stimulated student engagement and supported independent learning beyond the classroom. The experimental group showed a high level of EDMA improvement (<g> = 0.76), while the control group showed a medium level (<g> = 0.64). These findings suggest that mobile-based gamification can enhance science learning in Islamic junior high schools. The study highlights the importance of teacher and parent cooperation in supporting students’ use of gamification apps for independent learning outside school hours.

Abstract

Indonesia, located at the confluence of three major tectonic plates, this situation allows Indonesia to always be under threat of geological disasters. Ternate Island with Mount Gamalama, located in the western part of Halmahera Island, is also a threat of geological disasters. SMP Negeri 13 Kota Ternate, located in a high-risk area of earthquake and volcanic eruption, became the location of the Disaster Preparedness School (SSB) implementation. This activity aims to implement the concept of Disaster Preparedness School to reduce disaster risks and impacts through a comprehensive approach. The research method used a participatory approach with activities including disaster socialization, rescue simulations, science projects to make simple earthquake detection devices, installation of disaster signs, and lectures from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). SSB implementation was carried out through three stages: organizing, interpreting, and applying. The results of the activities show a high level of school resilience with six supporting aspects, but there are still obstacles such as student turnover and limited funds. SSB activities contribute significantly in increasing the awareness and preparedness of school community in facing disasters. It can be concluded that the implementation of SSB in SMP Negeri 13 Ternate City successfully integrated disaster mitigation in the curriculum and school activities. The main recommendation is to increase socialization, implement routine simulations, and develop the resilience aspects of the school in a comprehensive manner.

Abstract

The coast of Jailolo is a tourism area that has the potential of natural resources, namely the potential of village tourism. Developing village tourism potential greatly supports economic activities in increasing community income. The high potential for geological disasters has a negative impact on the Jailolo coastal area, especially village tourism destinations. The low level of community resilience to geological disasters is limited information and a need for more data on disaster risk in the Jailolo coastal area. Therefore, maximum efforts should be made to increase community knowledge related to tourism optimisation, reducing the impact and risk of geological disasters. For mitigation efforts to be maximally and well coordinated, a tourism development strategy is needed on the potential of village tourism on the coast of Jailolo based on disaster mitigation, including multi-risk mapping of geological disasters on the coast of Jailolo. The resulting multi-risk map can be used for safe planning and safe land use and reduces the risk of geological disasters in the Jailolo coastal tourism area. The method used was an exploratory and evaluative survey method with a quantitative approach. Primary data sources were collected by surveying vulnerable communities using questionnaires and interviews to obtain information on capacity. Data processing was carried out in the form of scoring and then mapped with the help of QuantumGIS software. The data analysis technique refers to the Regulation of BNPB No. 2 of 2012 on Disaster Risk Assessment. It uses the Multi Criteria Analysis method with the help of Geographic Information System (GIS) software. The results showed that the Jailolo coastal tourist destination has a high risk of earthquake and tsunami disasters (score 3, red colour). Earthquake and tsunami multi-risk mapping in the Jailolo coastal tourist destination area, West Halmahera, is one of the strategies for developing disaster mitigation-based tourist destinations.
