Abstract

The issue of gender equality in Southeast Sulawesi still needs further attention, as indicated by the uneven value of the Gender Development Index (GDI) in each district/city in the region. Therefore, an in-depth analysis is needed to identify factors that affect the GDI. One method that can be used is semiparametric regression with the Nadaraya-Watson estimator, which allows modeling the relationship between variables with more flexibility. This study aims to build a semiparametric regression model to identify factors that contribute to HDI in Southeast Sulawesi Province. The results of the analysis showed that the optimal bandwidth values obtained were h1= 1.57, h2=0.49, h3=2.50 and h4=4.61. The resulting model has an R2 and MSE values of 99.8% and 0.14% respectively, indicating that the model has high accuracy in explaining the overall variation in GDI.

Abstract

This study aims to model the data on the Percentage of Poor Population in Sulawesi Island in 2023, considering various factors that influence poverty. Eradicating extreme poverty has become a top priority to be achieved by 2030. This study examines the influence of several variables, such as Open Unemployment Rate, Human Development Index, Labor Force Participation Rate, Average Length of Schooling, Percentage of Access to Proper Sanitation, and Gross Regional Domestic Product, on the Percentage of Poor Population in Sulawesi Island, using the Kernel Priestley-Chao estimation in Semiparametric regression with an Ordinary Least Square approach. This study also applies the selection of optimal bandwidth using the minimum Generalized Cross Validation method with an optimal bandwidth of 0.991, resulting in a Mean Absolute Percentage Error value of 16.32%. The model shows excellent estimation results, with a residual coefficient value of 69% used to model the Percentage of Poor Population data with a high level of accuracy. The data used partially has a parametric pattern, while some do not have a specific pattern, and there are outliers.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Voice of America (VOA) videos as a medium for improving students’ English listening skills and examines student responses to this media. Using a pre-experimental design, data were collected through pre-tests, post-tests, and a questionnaire involving 30 eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 13 Makassar. The results revealed a significant improvement in students’ listening performance, with mean scores increasing from 70.43 (pre-test) to 86.00 (post-test), reflecting a 22.10% gain. Statistical analysis showed a t-test value of 130.6, exceeding the t-table value of 2.045 (p < 0.05), confirming the significance of the improvement. Student responses to the use of VOA videos were mixed, with a tendency toward neutrality and disagreement. These findings suggest that while VOA videos can effectively enhance listening skills, student engagement and perception may vary. This study contributes to the existing literature on the integration of authentic multimedia in language instruction, particularly in listening comprehension.
