Abstract

This study examines the use of conversational implications in Skyfall (2012) through pragmatic analysis based on Grice's Principle of Cooperation. This study aims to identify how maximal violations contribute to implicit meaning and character development in cinematic dialogue. A qualitative descriptive method was used, focusing on 25 dialogue snippets selected through targeted sampling based on their relevance to the implications. The data was collected by watching the movie repeatedly, transcribing key interactions, and encoding each utterance according to the four conversation maxims Quantity, Quality, Relationship, and How. Analytical procedures involve (1) identifying potential implications, (2) determining the maxims that are being violated or adhered to, (3) interpreting the implied meanings using contextual and theoretical cues, and (4) categorizing the communicative functions of each implication. The findings show that the Maxim of Relations is most often violated, followed by Quantity, Quality, and Manner, which shows the dominance of impurity, sarcasm, and relevance-based inference. Such implications have a variety of pragmatic functions, including sarcasm, emotional concealment, seduction, power negotiation, and indirect threats. These patterns highlight how Skyfall builds James Bond's communicative persona strategic, emotionally controlled, and dependent on implications rather than explicit. The study concludes that implication is a central feature of film discourse, which enriches the depth of narrative and character interaction, while demonstrating the value of pragmatic analysis in understanding cinematic storytelling.

Abstract

Cendana (Santalum album L.) mengandung berbagai senyawa volatil, tumbuh di beberapa wilayah di Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: (1) mendeskripsikan profil kimia senyawa volatil Santalum album L. dari Nglanggeran, Wanagama, dan Petir; (2) membandingkan senyawa volatil cendana di ketiga lokasi tersebut; dan (3) merekomendasikan praktik silvikultur untuk Santalum album L. di masing-masing lokasi berdasarkan profil kimia volatilnya. Minyak atsiri diekstraksi dari sampel kayu tiga pohon yang dipilih secara acak di setiap lokasi menggunakan n-heksana dan dianalisis dengan GC-MS menggunakan kolom HP-5MS UI (30 m × 0,25 mm × 0,25 µm) dengan program suhu oven dari 50 °C hingga 280 °C selama 53 menit. Dari sembilan kromatogram ditemukan empat belas senyawa volatil valid, termasuk hidrokarbon alifatik (undekana, pentadekana, isomer trimetil dodekana) dan alkohol seskuiterpena (α-santalol, β-santalol). Profil kimia bervariasi antar lokasi tumbuh yang berbeda: sampel dari Petir menunjukkan kadar α-santalol tertinggi (9,25%) dan β-santalol (11,38%), yang memenuhi standar kualitas internasional, sementara Nglanggeran dan Wanagama didominasi oleh alkana (5,76–8,45%). Temuan ini konsisten dengan pengamatan global mengenai pengaruh asal benih (provenance) terhadap komposisi minyak Santalum album. Statistik deskriptif (rata-rata, rentang, koefisien variasi) digunakan untuk perbandingan lokasi, memberikan alternatif praktis untuk skrining silvikultur tahap awal. Protokol yang sederhana dan hemat biaya ini memungkinkan praktisi mengidentifikasi lokasi optimal untuk produksi minyak bernilai tinggi. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan Petir sebagai lokasi unggulan untuk hasil minyak premium dan menyarankan penerapan perlakuan stres terkendali di lokasi lain guna meningkatkan sintesis santalol. Secara keseluruhan, penelitian ini menyediakan kerangka kerja praktis untuk mengintegrasikan profil kimia GC-MS dalam pengambilan keputusan silvikultur dan mendukung verifikasi forensik asal Santalum album L. di masa depan. Abstract

The demand for environmentally friendly textiles has driven the increasing use of plant-based natural dyes, particularly in ecoprint batik products. However, local knowledge regarding dye plant species, utilized plant parts, and dyeing techniques has not been systematically documented. This study aims to examine the utilization of natural dye plants in ecoprint batik fabric production within the GodhongKoe and Cindelaras communities in Surakarta City, Central Java. The research employed a descriptive method using primary data obtained through observations, questionnaires, and interviews with artisans selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively by calculating the percentage of plant organ usage. The results showed that both communities utilized 10 plant species each. Leaves were the most dominantly used plant organ, accounting for 60% of total usage, due to their easy availability and effectiveness in producing natural patterns and colors. In addition, stems and bark were utilized as sources of strong pigments and natural fixatives. This study concludes that ecoprint practices reflect the utilization of local plant diversity based on ethnobotanical knowledge. These findings contribute to the preservation of local knowledge on the use of natural dye plants while supporting the development of environmentally friendly creative industries based on local biological resources.

Abstract

Character education has been widely promoted in Indonesian education policy; however, empirical studies examining how it is enacted in EFL classrooms at the senior high school level remain limited, particularly in terms of classroom-level practices and teacher interpretation. This qualitative case study investigates the implementation of character education in EFL teaching at SMA Cendana Pekanbaru, focusing on how values are enacted in practice. Data were collected from two English teachers through lesson plan analysis (n=12), classroom observations (n=6 sessions), and semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that character education is primarily integrated through (1) routine-based classroom management practices that reinforce discipline and responsibility, (2) teacher modelling and interactional feedback that promote respect and honesty, and (3) task-based activities that implicitly embed cooperation and perseverance. However, implementation remains surface-level, as teachers prioritize linguistic targets and rarely engage students in critical moral reflection. Given the small-scale, bounded nature of the study, the findings highlight how policy-level expectations are selectively enacted in classroom practice rather than fully realized. The study underscores the need for pedagogical support that moves beyond implicit integration toward more reflective and explicit character education in EFL contexts.

Abstract

Latar Belakang: Sebagai lingua franca global, bahasa Inggris memiliki peran penting dalam berbagai bidang, termasuk pendidikan. Dalam pembelajaran bahasa, selain keterampilan komunikatif, literasi linguistik juga menjadi aspek penting untuk dipahami. Salah satu fenomena linguistik yang relevan namun jarang diperkenalkan dalam pembelajaran adalah borrowing, yaitu proses peminjaman kosakata dari satu bahasa ke bahasa lain. Tujuan: Program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan literasi linguistik siswa melalui pengenalan konsep borrowing words dalam bahasa Inggris berbasis aplikasi. Kegiatan dilaksanakan di SMA IT Imam Syafii 2 Pekanbaru dengan melibatkan 19 siswa sebagai peserta. Metode: Metode yang digunakan adalah pembelajaran berbasis intervensi edukatif dengan desain pre-test dan post-test yang dipadukan dengan penggunaan aplikasi kuis interaktif kahoot sebagai media evaluasi dan penguatan materi. Kegiatan pembelajaran dilaksanakan melalui empat pertemuan yang mencakup pengenalan konsep dasar borrowing, jenis-jenis borrowing words seperti loanwords, loan translation, dan loan blends, serta latihan aplikatif dalam konteks kalimat. Hasil: Hasil program PkM menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pemahaman siswa yang signifikan, ditunjukkan oleh peningkatan nilai rata-rata dari 5,03 pada pre-test menjadi 7,16 pada post-test. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran berbasis aplikasi efektif dalam meningkatkan pemahaman siswa terhadap konsep borrowing sekaligus memperkuat literasi linguistik mereka. Program ini juga meningkatkan motivasi dan partisipasi siswa dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Kesimpulan: Oleh sebab itu, pendekatan pembelajaran berbasis aplikasi ini berpotensi untuk dikembangkan dan diterapkan pada sekolah lain dengan karakteristik yang serupa.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pragmatic elements present in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks used in senior high schools in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. Specifically, it examines the coverage of speech acts, metapragmatic strategies, and contextual variables in two widely used textbooks: Buku Sarana Elektronik (BSE) and Pathway to English, for grades X, XI, and XII. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach with document analysis techniques, drawing data from the textbooks and interviews with English teachers in Pekanbaru. The findings reveal that the coverage of speech acts in both textbooks is incomplete, with an overemphasis on directives such as commands, requests, and suggestions. These speech acts, often face-threatening, require higher pragmatic competence from learners, which the textbooks do not adequately support. Additionally, metapragmatic information provided in the textbooks is limited and focuses more on pragmalinguistics than sociopragmatic factors, leaving students underprepared for real-life communication where social norms and contextual variables such as power dynamics play a crucial role. The textbooks also lack diversity in contextual variables, with most dialogues featuring interactions between individuals of equal power and little social distance, reducing learners’ exposure to various social roles and communication contexts. The study concludes that both BSE and Pathway to English fail to provide sufficient pragmatic content and suggests that future textbook design should include a broader range of speech acts, metapragmatic strategies, and diverse social contexts to better develop learners' pragmatic competence. The findings have significant implications for improving the effectiveness of teaching materials in Indonesian EFL classrooms.

Abstract

Earlier research reported that GABA had a correlation with diabetes in processes of glucose homeostasis. This study aims to identify the validity of B-receptor Rattus norvegicus as GABA protein target, modeling the structure and knowing the binding affinity between GABA and B-receptor Rattus norvegicus through molecular docking.   The research was carried out using in-silico method.  The interaction of GABA with the target protein was determined using SuperPred, followed by modeling the protein target using SwissadMe. Ramachandran Plot and Errat Procheck are used to determine the validity of the protein target. Molecular docking was determined using Pyrx and PyMol. The results showed that GABA binding to the B- receptor Rattus norvegicus has biological activity as glucose oxidase inhibitor and antidiabetic.  The conclusion are: B-receptor Rattus norvegicus is a valid protein target for binding to GABA; there are four 3-dimensional models of B-receptor Rattus norvegicus and the best model has 98.43% sequence identity; the binding affinity of GABA (ligand) on B-receptor Rattus norvegicus from the best model is -3.4 kcal/mol energy, 1.773 RMSD lower bound, and 1.81 RMSD upper bound. It is suggested that this research might be used as an empirical basis to further investigate GABA as antidiabetic.

Abstract

ABSTRAK-Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh model pembelajaran inkuiri terbimbing terhadap kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa kelas X MIA pada materi pencemaran lingkungan di SMA A Surakarta.Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen semu (quasi experimental research) dengan desain penelitian posttest only nonequivalent control group design. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas X MIA SMA A Surakarta Tahun Pelajaran 2013/2014. Teknik pengambilan sampel yang digunakan dalam penelitian adalah cluster sampling. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan metode tes dan non tes. Metode tes meliputi soal uraian kemampuan berpikir kritis sedangkan metode non tes meliputi observasi dan dokumentasi. Uji hipotesis dengan menggunakan uji-t (t-test) dibantu SPSS versi 16.Hasil uji hipotesis pengaruh model pembelajaran inkuiri terbimbing terhadap kemampuan berpikir kritis diperoleh nilai sig.<a yaitu 0,013 < 0,05 dan nilai thitung>ttabel(a,df) yaitu 2,563 > 1,670 sehingga H0 ditolak. Hal ini berarti perolehan rata-rata kemampuan berpikir kritis antara eksperimen kelas dan kelas kontrol berbeda nyata. Perbedaan tersebut juga didukung secara deskriptif yaitu dari nilai rata-rata kemampuan berpikir kritis kelas eksperimen (81,44) lebih tinggi dari kelas kontrol (75,97). Hasil capaian aspek berpikir kritis pada kelas eksperimen yaitu interpretation 90 %, analysis 53 %, inference 76 %, explanation 95 %, evaluation 82% dan self-regulation 93 %, sedangkan pada kelas kontrol yaitu interpretation 84 %, analysis 45 %, inference 84 %, explanation 91 %, evaluation 61 % dan self-regulation 91 %. Capaian tiap aspek berpikir kritis pada kelas ekperimen lebih tinggi dari kelas kontrol pada semua aspek kemampuan berpikir kritis kecuali aspek inference.Berdasarkan hasil uji hipotesis dan analisis data dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada pengaruh signifikan model pembelajaran inkuiri terbimbing terhadap kemampuan berpikir kritis dalam pembelajaran biologi pada aspek interpretation, analysis, explanation, evaluation, dan self-regulation namun tidak signifikan pada aspek inference. Kata kunci: Model Pembelajaran Inkuiri Terbimbing, Kemampuan Berpikir KritisABSTRACT- The objective of this research was to find out the influence of guided inquiry learning toward the critical thinking skills of X MIA students on environmental pollution material in SMA A Surakarta. This research was a quasi experimental research with posttest only nonequivalent control group design. The population of the research is all of the X MIA students of SMA A Surakarta in the academic year of 2013/2014. The sample was selected through cluster sampling. The data were collected using test and non-test method. The test applied test method is critical thinking essay, while the applied non-test method is observation and documentation. The hypothesis testing is done by applying t-test with SPSS version 16. From the hypothesis result of the influence of guided inquiry learning toward critical thinking skill, the obtained result of the significance value is 0.013 (a< 0.05) and t = 2.563 > ttable(a,df) = 1.670. There is a significant difference in the mean score of critical thinking skill between experimental group and control group. The mean score of experimental group (81.44) is higher than control group (75.97). The achievement of each critical thinking skills aspects of experimental group on interpretation is 90 %, analysis is 53 %, inference is 76 %, explanation is 95 %, evaluation is 82% dan self-regulation is 93 %, while the achievement of each critical thinking skills aspects of control group on interpretation is 84 %, analysis is 45 %, inference is 84 %, explanation is 91 %, evaluation is 61 % dan self-regulation is 91 %. The achievement of each critical thinking skills aspects of experimental group is higher than control group in all of critical thinking skills aspects except inference. Based on hypothesis testing and data analysis it can be concluded that guided inquiry learning gives significant effect toward the critical thinking skill in biology learning on interpretation, analysis, explanation, evaluation, and self-regulation aspect but not significant on inference aspect.

Abstract

Surakarta memiliki luas wilayah 44 km2, terletak di dataran rendah dengan ketinggian 105 m dpl dan di pusat kota 95 m dpl dan memiliki iklim muson tropis. Tidak semua wilayah Surakarta ditempati penduduk. Ruang terbuka di Surakarta  ditumbuhi berbagai jenis tumbuhan dengan berbagai bentuk kehidupan (life form). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui berbagai tipe life form penyusun vegetasi dan mengetahui tipe life form yang paling melimpah dan dominan di Kotamadya Surakarta. Sampling dilakukan pada 1% luas free area (area terbuka hijau) di setiap kecamatan. Ukuran Plot yang digunakan adalah (10x10) m kemudian pada plot tersebut dilakukan pengamatan untuk diidentifikasi jenis tumbuhan yang ada dan ditentukan tipe bentuk kehidupan (life form) dari setiap tumbuhan yang ditemukan. Cover dari setiap bentuk kehidupan (life form) diukur dengan skala Braun-Blanquet kemudian dibandingkan dengan bentuk kehidupan (life form) standar Raunkiaer. Berdasarkan penelitian diketahui bahwa bentuk kehidupan (life form) yang paling mendominasi vegetasi di Surakarta adalah Phanerophyte dengan persentase cover tertinggi (104%). Dengan membandingkan bentuk kehidupan (life form) standar Raunkiaer diketahui Cryptophyte memiliki persentase di bawah persentase Cryptophyte bentuk kehidupan (life form) standar Raunchier.

Abstract

One of the issues in biology education is the low level of students’ critical thinking skills. This is primarily due to conventional, teacher-centered learning approaches that do not allow students to develop their thinking. Therefore, innovative teaching strategies are needed to enhance students’ critical thinking abilities, like the discovery learning model integrated with reflective learning journals. This study aims to investigate the impact of the discovery learning model integrated with reflective learning journals in improving students’ critical thinking skills, including an analysis based on high and low academic abilities. This quasi-experimental study employs a pretest-posttest control group design. The sample was selected using cluster random sampling at SMA Negeri 2 Karanganyar, with class X-E8 as the control group and class X-E6 as the experimental group. Primary data was collected with observation sheets, tests, and documentation. Hypothesis testing was conducted using ANCOVA and N-Gain tests. The findings indicate significant differences in students’ critical thinking skills on environmental changes when taught using the discovery learning model alone compared to the discovery learning model combined with reflective learning journals. Moreover, differences were observed based on students’ high and low academic abilities. Combining the discovery learning model with reflective learning journals enables students to identify and formulate problems based on observed phenomena, determine learning objectives, gather data, draw conclusions, and articulate their thoughts through reflective journal writing. This instructional approach is used for broader implementation and further investigation to assess its impact on other learning outcomes.
