Abstract

Abstract

Research on the synthesis of Carbon Dots using the laser ablation method has been carried out at a time duration of 1, 2, and 3 hours (energy 60 mJ, wavelength 1064 nm and frequency 10 Hz). This research uses organic material from Tea and Toluene as the carbon solvent. The characterization method uses a UV-Vis Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) spectrum to measure the reflectance value and uses the Kubelka-Munk equation to determine the relationship between the absorbance coefficient parameter (s) and the scattering reflectance coefficient (k). The size and morphological characterization methods used Particle Size Analyzer (PSA) and Transmission Electron Microscopy, while the functional group characteristics used the Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) tool. FTIR spectra show the O-H group which is a hydroxyl bond and N-H is a carboxylic acid. The results of measurement and analysis of bandgap energy at different time durations for direct transition (n=2) were 1 hour (3.62 eV, 342.49 nm), 2 hours (3.24 eV, 380.61 nm) and 3 hours (2.74, 451.82 nm). Indirect transitions (n=1/2) were 1 hour (3.17 eV, 391.02 nm), 2 hours (2.50 eV, 495.36 nm) and 3 hours (2.21 eV, 559.04).

Abstract

Indonesia is facing the problem of low productivity of cattle. To increase the productivity of cattle producer, it can actually be done by relocating the cattle to the comfort zone by observing the physiological response. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effects of misting cattle’s environment by using water sprinkler on the physiological response and the microclimate of the cattle’s shed. The design used was a paired T-test for physiological and microclimate response variables with 5 replications and a completely randomized design to determine the difference between body surface temperatures. The observations were conducted before water misting and after water misting. The results showed that treatment of misting water in the afternoon significantly decreased (P<0.05) the variables of cage temperature, humidity, temperature humidity index, rectal temperature, respiratory rate, and heart rate. Water misting in the afternoon in cattle produced a good effect on all physiological response variables. Keywords: beef cattle, pen microclimate, physiological responses, water sprinkler

Abstract

Cattle is meat-producing livestock of the large ruminant. The environmental conditions must remain in the thermoneutral zone because this affects livestock productivity. An environmental modification related to microclimate management is required through a misting system using a water sprinkler. The study was conducted in one of the barns of the Sekolah Peternakan Rakyat (SPR) Maju Bersama livestock group in Drokilo Village, Kedungadem District, Bojonegoro Regency, East Java. The purpose of this study was to analyze the microclimate management of the barn through the misting system in order to improve the physiological response of cattle. The variables observed were the air temperature, air humidity, Temperature Humidity Index (THI), respiratory frequency, heart rate, rectal temperature, and body surface temperature. Body surface temperatures were measured on the face, back, and rump. The analytical method used in this was unpaired T-test five replications. The results showed that the average microclimate data for barn cattle were: air temperature 27.40±0.59°C, air humidity 83.92±1.55%, and Temperature Humidity Index (THI) 79.59±1.06. The results showed that the average physiological response data for cattle were: heart rate 47.02±2.29 beats per minute, respiration rate 16.94±1.26 beats per minute, and rectal temperature 38.65±0.27°C. The results showed that the average body surface temperature data for the face was 37.03±0.38°C, the back was 36.33±0.59°C, and the rump was 36.28±0.68°C. The results showed that the treatment before and after the morning measurement water misting was significantly different (p<0.05) in all the observed variables. Water misting has the effect on decreasing the air temperature, humidity, Temperature Humidity Index (THI), respiratory rate, heart rate, body temperature, and rectal temperature.

Abstract

Circadian rhythm is the adaptation response of animals against light alteration that affects various behavioral and physiological responses. Bright light is a danger signal for nocturnal animals because it exposes them more to predators. This research aimed to study the changes in the behavior of rats during the partial solar eclipse (PSE) period. The PSE period occurred across Bogor, Indonesia, on 9 March 2016. The PSE started at 06.19 AM, peaked at 07.21 AM, and ended at 08.30 AM. The light level decreased since the early solar eclipse, then dropped significantly at the peak period. The activities of six mature male Sprague Dawley rats were measured using Opto-Varimex-5 Auto Track System during the PSE period. The measurements were repeated one day after the PSE period as the non-PSE period. There were significant differences (P<0.05) in stereotypic time, burst of stereotypic movement, and horizontal count in the early, peak, and end periods of the PSE period compared with the values at the same time of the non-PSE period. The activities of rats changed during the PSE period. Rats did not rest as in their normal nocturnal behavior during darkness but were more active and stressed because of the rapid change in light level during the PSE period.

Abstract

Quail has a high egg production. On the other hand, quail has a weakness, which is prone to stress. This stress is caused by erratic weather conditions. This study examines and evaluates the role and function of cassava leaf paste on aspects of egg performance and egg quality of quail eggs in the laying period that are reared under natural conditions or normal conditions in tropical areas, such as in Indonesia. Observation of egg performance was detected by calculating egg length, egg width, and egg shape index. Observation of egg quality aspects was detected by calculating the quality of the shell, egg white, and egg yolk. The results showed that the shape index of quail eggs at various levels of cassava leaf paste administration showed results that were not significantly different. The egg shape index obtained at P2 and P3 tends to be more oval/semi-tapered, while at P0 and P1 it tends to be round. The value of the eggshell weight, egg white weight, and egg yolk weight that received cassava leaf paste were higher than the control treatment. The high eggshell weight, egg white weight, and egg yolk weight were suspected to be differences in nutritional content, mineral elements, and flavonoids between treatments. Giving cassava leaf paste can increase the index of egg shape in the quail laying period. The application of cassava leaf paste can also increase the weight of the shell, the weight of the egg white, and the weight of the yolk in the egg-laying period of quail.

Abstract

Poultry especially Japanese quails are susceptible to the environmental threat that induced glucocorticoid hormone secretion. Glucocorticoids stimulate oxidative stress and a decrease in the immune system. The purpose of this research is to study the potential of silkworm extract (Bombyx mori) to overcome oxidative stress and reduced the immune system in quails that were induced with dexamethasone as glucocorticoid. Thirty-two adult quails were used and were given dexamethasone. Those quails were divided into 4 groups, four groups were given 0 mg, 0.16 mg/kg, 0.32 mg/kg, and 0.64 mg/kg of silkworm extract for each quail. The parameters that were observed are total leucocyte count, differential leucocyte count, and heterophil/lymphocyte ratio. The results are not significant compared to the groups that were not given any supplements. This study shows that the administration of silkworm extract is not effective for recovery purposes. Keywords: antioxidant, quail, Bombyx mori, dexamethasone
