Abstract

Abstract

The rapid development of social media has significantly transformed the way political leadership is constructed, distributed, and perceived within the digital public sphere. This transformation becomes more complex in the context of women’s leadership in Indonesia, which continues to face various structural and cultural challenges, including gender bias, stereotypes, and the tendency to evaluate leaders based on personal attributes. This phenomenon is reflected in the emergence of Sherly Tjoanda as a female regional leader who is active on platforms such as X and TikTok, where public conversations about her not only focus on performance and policy issues but also on gender identity, appearance, and emotional closeness to society. The differing characteristics of these platforms further shape the dynamics of interaction and the construction of meaning in digital spaces. This study aims to analyze the construction of women’s leadership by mapping conversation network structures and identifying framing patterns on X and TikTok using a mixed-methods approach that combines Social Network Analysis (SNA) and framing analysis. Data were collected through a scraping process using Python in Google Colaboratory with relevant keywords, then analyzed using Gephi to identify network structures, dominant actors, and interaction patterns, while framing analysis was employed to examine dominant narrative tendencies. The findings indicate that conversation networks on TikTok tend to be more centralized with relatively homogeneous narratives emphasizing leaders’ closeness to the public and engagement with economic welfare issues, while still containing framing that highlights personal attributes and gender identity. In contrast, networks on platform X are more fragmented with a high level of modularity, reflecting the presence of diverse discourse clusters containing support, criticism, and contestation of public opinion. This study concludes that the construction of women’s leadership on social media is shaped not only by policy narratives but also by social processes that both reproduce and challenge gender bias in the digital public sphere.

Abstract

This study examines women’s leadership in local politics through an analysis of Sherly Tjoanda as Governor of North Maluku Province using a transformational leadership perspective. The study is grounded in the low representation of women in local politics and the persistent dominance of patriarchal culture within political structures. The objective of this research is to understand the practices of women’s leadership and how such leadership is implemented within the context of regional governance. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach, utilizing primary and secondary data obtained from official documents, media sources, and academic literature. The findings reveal that Sherly Tjoanda’s leadership reflects key dimensions of transformational leadership, including inclusive political communication, the use of digital media, and direct engagement with communities to capture public aspirations. Her leadership is also demonstrated through responsive public policies in education, healthcare, and regional economic development. Furthermore, her leadership approach strengthens public trust through transparency, community participation, and empathetic governance. However, women’s leadership continues to face structural challenges, such as patriarchal culture, gender stereotypes, and limited access within political institutions. This study concludes that transformational women’s leadership plays a significant role in strengthening a more inclusive, participatory, and responsive local democracy.

Abstract

Women’s political representation is a crucial element of an inclusive democracy; however, the reality in Papua shows that women’s participation in legislative bodies remains low despite the implementation of a 30% affirmative action quota policy. This condition reflects a gap between formal regulations and local political practices shaped by social, cultural, and structural factors. The identified problems include the persistence of patriarchal culture, limited access of women to political resources, weak political party support for women’s cadre development, and male dominance in local power structures that hinder women’s electability. This study employs a qualitative approach using a literature review method, examining various sources such as books, academic journals, and relevant policy documents. Data were analyzed inductively to understand the relationship between affirmative policies and local political realities in Papua. The findings indicate that the 30% quota policy is often implemented merely as an administrative requirement without substantive political support for female candidates. Patriarchal culture, limited political capital, and non-inclusive party recruitment systems remain major barriers. Furthermore, there is a gap between descriptive and substantive representation of women in legislative institutions. In conclusion, the low level of women’s political representation in Papua is not solely due to regulatory shortcomings but also influenced by social and political structures that do not support gender equality. Comprehensive efforts are needed, including strengthening women’s political capacity, reforming internal party systems, and transforming cultural norms to achieve more inclusive political representation.

Abstract

Women’s political representation is a key indicator of inclusive democracy; however, the 2024 legislative elections reveal an extreme condition of 0% female representation in several regions of East Nusa Tenggara. This phenomenon reflects a gap between affirmative policies and local political realities. The problem addressed in this study is the complete absence of women in the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) in four regencies—Lembata, East Flores, Ngada, and Rote Ndao—and the underlying factors contributing to this condition from the perspective of political representation theory. This study employs a qualitative approach using a literature review and document analysis method. Data were collected from academic journals, official government reports, and statistical sources, and analyzed through thematic content analysis using Hanna Pitkin’s theory of representation. The findings indicate that the absence of women constitutes a failure of descriptive representation, as legislative institutions do not reflect the demographic composition of society. Furthermore, this condition weakens substantive representation, particularly in addressing women’s interests in public policy. Key barriers include patriarchal culture, non-inclusive party recruitment mechanisms, and unequal access to political resources. In conclusion, the crisis of women’s representation at the local level is not only caused by weak implementation of affirmative policies but also by gender-biased social and political structures. Comprehensive efforts are required, including political party reform, strengthening women’s political capacity, and transforming political culture to achieve more inclusive democracy.

Abstract

Electoral democracy should be a space for contestation for competing ideas and policy programs based on the principle of equality, but in its application, discussions about politics often reproduce gender stereotypes that doubt the legitimacy of women's leadership. The phenomenon that occurred shows in the dynamics of the 2024 Banten Regional Election debate which is able to give rise to statements containing sexist elements and potentially delegitimize women's political authority. This study aims to analyze the reproduction of gender stereotypes in debate discourse and how media framing shapes the construction of meaning and legitimacy of these statements in the public space. The method used in this study is a literature study with a qualitative approach and an analysis of interpretive discourse related to debate broadcasts, online media reports, and existing academic literature related to gender and politics. The results of the study show that sexist speech in debates is not only political rhetoric, but can serve as a mechanism of symbolic violence that reproduces patriarchal stereotypes and can cast doubt on women's leadership capacity. In addition, the media framing that places such statements as political controversies without attributing them. These findings confirm that the quality of democracy is not always determined by electoral mechanisms, but also about the extent to which political space can guarantee legitimacy and equality for women in political discourse.

Abstract

Abstract

This article aims to describe how the movement carried out by the Juang Community of Lebak, Indonesia, encouraged and empowered the community to develop honey bee cultivation in Lebak Regency amidst the growing issue of local food innovation and diversification. This study contributes to the studies of the movement of honey bee cultivation, which are so far still understudied. Research on honey bees commonly focuses on collaboration with government or community empowerment. This study, however, tries to look at the social movements aimed at developing honey production in local contexts using a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. The results show that the Juang Community of Lebak was a driving force for the community in Kampung Buana in cultivating honey bees. It attempted various activities such as building collaboration, strengthening and developing resources, and seeking wider networks for a more open market. However, the movement had difficulties in establishing good collaboration from various parties to jointly develop the potential of honey bees in Lebak Regency.

Abstract

This study examines the political leadership image of Ratu Tatu Chasanah through the perspective of Simone de Beauvoir’s existentialist feminism within the context of local politics in Indonesia. The research employed an empirical qualitative approach using a descriptive case study design focused on the political dynamics of Serang Regency. Data were collected through semi structured interviews, documentation studies, media reports, government archives, and academic literature related to women’s leadership and feminist political discourse. The findings demonstrate that Ratu Tatu Chasanah’s leadership represents a form of women’s existential affirmation within a patriarchal political structure through active participation in governance, strategic decision making, and the construction of public legitimacy. Her leadership also contributed to the transformation of social perceptions regarding women’s political capacities and weakened gender based stereotypes in local governance. From the perspective of existentialist feminism, political leadership becomes a medium through which women negotiate subjectivity, autonomy, and social recognition within contemporary democratic institutions.
