Abstract

Indonesian pupils need help solving problems, particularly in mathematics, due to the need for practice questions with the higher-order thinking (HOT) type. This research aims to develop a reliable and valid tool for assessing students' higher-order thinking skills in mathematics. Developing a test involves gathering requirements, creating questions, assessing answers, running trials, analyzing data, making adjustments, and finally putting everything together. The instrument trial was conducted at SMAN at Majalengka, West Java. The total number of test subjects was 32 students. Research data were collected using a description test. The test instrument consists of 10 descriptions, but only 6 had good validity based on the value of V on the V-Aiken. In addition, the test package produces reliable questions based on Cronbach's Alpha scores. The test results of the instrument showed that the HOTS of mathematics for Grade X students was good. This step provides an overview to teachers in designing valid and relevant instruments.

Abstract

Inductive reasoning has an important role in mathematics learning. It includes making generalizations and analogical reasoning. While a generalization explains the relationship between several concepts applied in more general situations, analogical reasoning compares two things. This research is qualitative and descriptive. It reviews and describes the mathematical reasoning abilities of junior high school students based on Bruner's learning theory. It was conducted at one of the junior high schools in Pekanbaru in the eighth grade in the 2022/2023 academic year, involving 70 students. The students were divided into three categories of prior mathematical knowledge: low, medium, and high. The instruments used to obtain data on how mathematical reasoning abilities relate to Bruner's learning theory in this study were (1) a test of mathematical reasoning abilities and 2) an interview guide. The results show that the average mathematical reasoning abilities of the eighth graders in this study were very high for the material on arithmetic sequences and series and low for the material on geometric sequences and series. However, the eight grade students' average generalizing and analogical reasoning abilities were quite good for both materials.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of computational thinking (CT) ability in students as witnessed by the author among prospective teachers, along with the changes that came about within the learning system in the move from face-to-face to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study specifically seeks to improve students’ mathematical computational thinking ability through the use of interactive multimedia-based teaching materials based on initial mathematical ability to support online learning. This quantitative study (quasiexperimental) was conducted at two universities, namely, Universities Islam Riau (UIR) and Universitas Pasir Pengaraian (UPP) in Indonesia. The research subjects were prospective mathematics teachers taking algebraic structure at the UIR (an experimental class) and the prospective mathematics teacher course at the UPP (control class) in the 2021/2022 academic year. The data were collected method through a computational thinking ability test and interview, and the test results data are processed using a statistical test. Normality is assessed using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, and homogeneity is assessed using the Levene and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests. From the two-way ANOVA test, a significance value of 0.001 < 0.05 was obtained. This indicates that an increase is observed in the mathematical computational thinking ability of students who receive learning using interactive multimedia-based teaching material based on initial mathematical ability.
