This study aims to analyze the difficulties students face in solving geometry problems related to polyhedral shapes. The indicators used in this study are competency achievement indicators. The research method employed is descriptive with a quantitative approach. Data collection techniques involved administering essay tests to students, followed by correction and analysis of their answers. The research was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Tualang with eighth-grade students during the second semester of the 2023/2024 academic year. The study population consisted of eighth-grade students, with a sample of 25 students. The researcher used an essay test as an instrument to gather data. The test results were analyzed by measuring the percentage of each indicator. The test instrument comprised five essay questions. The results showed that students at the school still experience difficulties in solving problems related to polyhedral shapes.

Abstract

Purpose: This research aims to analyze the difficulties experienced by junior high school students with two-dimensional space concepts. Methodology: This quantitative research employs a descriptive approach. The subjects were 30 seventh-grade students at Pekanbaru Da'wah Middle School, Indonesia. The research object is the students' test results regarding the concept of two-dimensional space. Data collection involved asking students to complete essay test questions. Findings: The results show that 50% of students had difficulty with the indicator "Applying concepts to solve problems." For the indicator "Using appropriate formulas and completing calculations correctly and accurately," 43.3% of students (13 out of 30) struggled. Regarding the indicator "Relating problems to everyday life," 30% of students (9 out of 30) experienced difficulties. Significance: The next stage is grouping students' abilities according to the indicators. It can be concluded that seventh-grade students at SMPN 1 still experience difficulties with questions on two-dimensional space.

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to measure the level of computational thinking readiness in prospective first-year mathematics education students. In addition, this study also aims to identify factors that influence their level of readiness towards computational thinking. This research is qualitative and descriptive in nature. This study describes first-year mathematics education students' mathematical computational thinking ability based on the theory of mathematical computational thinking. This study was conducted on first-year mathematics education students in the academic year 2023/2024. There were 16 first-year mathematics education students, all of whom were taken as samples in this study, to obtain more in-depth information about the computational thinking ability of first-year mathematics education students for further research development. The instruments used to collect data on first-year mathematics education students' mathematical computational thinking ability are (1) a mathematical computational thinking ability test and (2) an interview. The data obtained were calculated using statistical tests, and the results will be explained in depth. The mean score of the first-year mathematics education student's computational thinking ability test was 59.68, indicating that students generally have a fairly good level of computational thinking ability.

Abstract

Based on data from observation and interview with lecturer who teaches mathematics course on the subject under study, it was found that students' mathematical communication ability is still low. This study aims the students’ mathematical communication ability through Concept Attainment Model learning. The method in this study is two groups randomized subject post-test only. The number of subjects in this study were 82 students. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Levene test, t test, ANOVA one and two-way were used to analyse the data. The results of this study showed that (1) there is difference grade on the student’s mathematical communication ability  between experimental group and conventional group as a whole, (2) there is no difference on the students’ mathematical communication ability of experimental classes based on their Prior mathematical knowledge (PMK); (3) there is no interaction between the learning that is used with the students’ prior mathematical knowledge on the students’ mathematical communication ability. The concept attainment model provides a better influence on students’ mathematical communication ability, it is also necessary to see the influence of the concept attainment model on students' high-level mathematical thinking ability.

Abstract

Inductive reasoning has an important role in mathematics learning. It includes making generalizations and analogical reasoning. While a generalization explains the relationship between several concepts applied in more general situations, analogical reasoning compares two things. This research is qualitative and descriptive. It reviews and describes the mathematical reasoning abilities of junior high school students based on Bruner's learning theory. It was conducted at one of the junior high schools in Pekanbaru in the eighth grade in the 2022/2023 academic year, involving 70 students. The students were divided into three categories of prior mathematical knowledge: low, medium, and high. The instruments used to obtain data on how mathematical reasoning abilities relate to Bruner's learning theory in this study were (1) a test of mathematical reasoning abilities and 2) an interview guide. The results show that the average mathematical reasoning abilities of the eighth graders in this study were very high for the material on arithmetic sequences and series and low for the material on geometric sequences and series. However, the eight grade students' average generalizing and analogical reasoning abilities were quite good for both materials.

Abstract

Training on computational thinking questions for new Mathematics Education students is a training that aims to improve the understanding and computational thinking skills of students who are currently studying mathematics. Computational thinking is a key ability that allows individuals to formulate problems, develop algorithms, and apply computational concepts in problem solving. This training program identifies the gap between the ideal understanding of computing and today's reality, and seeks to fill the gap. Through a series of comprehensive training sessions, students are introduced to the basic concepts of computational thinking and the integration of mathematics with computing. They are given the opportunity to practice designing mathematical problems that require computational thinking as part of their teaching. This program aims to create mathematics teachers who are better prepared and competent in teaching mathematical concepts, while preparing them to face the demands of a world that is increasingly dependent on technology. In order to achieve this goal, this training emphasizes the importance of regular evaluations to monitor student progress. In this way, this training provides benefits for students in the context of mathematics education, but also contributes to the development of stronger mathematical literacy among the younger generation and their preparation for success in an increasingly digitally connected future.

Abstract

Augmented reality (A.R.) represents cutting-edge technology bridging digital information with the real world. In the context of learning, particularly concerning augmented reality, researchers, educators, and practitioners face the imperative of adapting to the challenges posed by this digital era. This systematic literature review aims to comprehensively explore and contrast multiple articles indexed in the Scopus Database, focusing on the intersection of mathematics education and Augmented Reality. The analysis underscores that A.R. presents a promising tool for heightening engagement and comprehension of mathematical concepts, particularly emphasized in elementary education and centered around matrices/geometry topics. The outcomes carry substantial implications for educators, advocating for the incorporation of A.R. as an innovative teaching method in mathematics and policymakers, signaling the necessity to foster the integration of A.R. technology in educational settings. Furthermore, this study's implications offer valuable direction for future research endeavors, suggesting the need for a more comprehensive exploration of specific facets of using A.R. in mathematics education.
