Abstract

The current cultural context has become a significant focus in mathematics education, serving not only as a bridge to formal understanding but also as a means of cultural preservation. This study aims to analyse the use of Palembang's cultural context in mathematics education through the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI) approach. The analysis was conducted on articles indexed in Scopus and Google Scholar based on publication year, content, methods, student skills developed, and research findings. Data analysis techniques were based on the PIECES framework (Planning, Identifying, Evaluating, Collecting/Elaborating, Explaining, and Summarising). From the selection process, 20 articles that met the inclusion criteria were obtained. The analysis results showed that the dominant cultural context of Palembang included traditional food (pempek), traditional fabrics (songket and jumputan), and trading activities on the Musi River. The most frequently studied mathematical topics were geometry and algebra, with the design research method used as an approach to design learning and develop media such as worksheets, educational videos, and evaluation instruments. The students' ability most frequently focused on was conceptual understanding. These findings provide significant contributions to educators and researchers in developing context-based cultural mathematics learning through the PMRI approach.

Abstract

Statistical literacy has emerged as a central competence in mathematics education, particularly for prospective teachers who must be able to interpret, analyze, and critically evaluate data in a world increasingly shaped by information and statistics. However, previous research shows that many prospective teachers continue to struggle with developing statistical literacy, especially in connecting abstract concepts to meaningful contexts. This gap highlights the need for instructional designs that not only strengthen statistical reasoning but also draw on culturally embedded practices to enhance relevance and engagement. Addressing this challenge, the present study develops a Local Instructional Theory (LIT) that supports prospective teachers’ statistical literacy through the integration of local cultural contexts in South Sumatra, designed within the framework of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) as adapted in Indonesia, namely Pendidikan Matematika Realistik Indonesia (PMRI). Employing a design research methodology, the study was conducted in three phases: a preliminary investigation, a design experiment (pilot and teaching experiment), and a retrospective analysis. The resulting LIT was structured around three context-based learning trajectories, each targeting a key dimension of statistical literacy: data visualization, data interpretation, and critical evaluation. Instructional activities were grounded in authentic cultural contexts—such as Pempek demand during Ramadan, the Bekarang Iwak fishing tradition, and coffee productivity in Pagar Alam—which were used to bridge statistical concepts with learners lived experiences. Findings from the teaching experiments indicate that prospective teachers demonstrated notable shifts from procedural to conceptual reasoning and from descriptive analysis to reflective critique. Participants also showed improved ability to select appropriate graphical representations, interpret contextual data, and critically assess the credibility and sufficiency of statistical information. These outcomes underscore the potential of culturally relevant instructional design to foster holistic statistical literacy. The study contributes both theoretically and practically by offering a validated model for integrating cultural contexts into mathematics education, thereby enriching prospective teachers’ curriculum and providing a replicable approach for diverse educational settings.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to describe the results of designing number pattern questions used to measure the mathematical thinking abilities of students with a kinesthetic learning style. The research subjects consisted of 5 class VIII students with a kinesthetic learning style. The type of research is design research with 5 stages, namely: Preliminary Design, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), Trial, Interview, and Retrospective Analysis. The data collection techniques are learning style questionnaires, tests and interviews. The data analysis used in the research is qualitative. Based on the results of the FGD, number pattern questions can be used to measure mathematical thinking abilities, because each question leads students to bring up specializing, generalizing, conjecturing and convincing aspects. Based on the test results, it is known that students can write specializing, generalizing, conjecturing, and convincing forms. Specializing is seen when students write the form of adding numbers for each term. Generalizing is seen when students find patterns by listing them one by one or using tables, conjecturing when they find the general formula, and convincing is seen when they find other ways to prove the answer. Based on the results of the interview, students' answers were obtained through the activity of managing and simulating questions using body parts.
