Abstract

Selenium is an essential micromineral that the body needs in modest amounts (0.2–12 mg/kg), yet it has important effects on the antioxidant defense, immune system, and digestive performance of aquatic species. This study aimed to analyze the growth of catfish (Clarias gariepinus) supplemented with feed additives containing selenium peptide through the coating method on feed. There were four different treatments, namely K (feed without feed additive), and feed with additive supplementation: A (3 g/kg feed), B (6 g/kg feed), and C (9 g/kg feed). A total of 15 catfish at an initial weight of 21.80 ± 0.29 g were reared in a 90×40×45 cm3 aquarium filled with water at a volume of 108 L, for 45 days. Fish were fed three times a day at satiation. Water quality management was carried out by the use of simple filtration in the container and water replacement to ensure optimum water quality values for catfish growth. The results showed that the final biomass of catfish fed with selenium peptide was significantly different (p<0.05) from catfish fed without selenium peptide, with a value of 1147,50 g and 96,67% of survival rate. Based on this study, the best dose of feed additive in catfish feed was 3 g/kg of feed. Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the growth performance and carbohydrate metabolism of Pacific whiteleg shrimp after feeding with different cinnamaldehyde concentrations and protein-energy ratios. The study used a completely randomized design with six treatments in triplicates. The treatments were S003213; treatment S053213; treatment S052814; treatment S102814; treatment S052815; and treatment S102815. The study was conducted for 56 days in a 76 L volume aquarium using shrimps with 1.38 ± 0.01 g at 200 individuals/m3. The results showed that the S053213 treatment was significantly different (P<0.05) compared to other treatments for the specific growth rate (SGR). Hexokinase (hk) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (pepck) produced by the S053213 treatment were significantly different (P<0.05) from the S003213 treatment. The S052815 and S102815 treatments produced higher protein retention (PR) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) compared to other treatments (P<0.05) and also produced the same final average weight (FW) as the S003213 treatment. This research shows that vannamei fed by 0.10% supplementation dose of cinnamaldehyde with a decreased feed protein up to 28% and C/P ratio 14 and 15 are able to utilize feed as well as protein 32% without cinnamaldehyde. The addition of cinnamaldehyde with a higher C/P ratio requires a higher dose of cinnamaldehyde than the optimal dose. Abstract

This study aimed to assess the impact of charcoal inclusion in feed on the physiological responses and growth of catfish. The experiment employed a completely randomized design (CRD) with five treatments and four replicates. Charcoal doses in the feed were set at 0% (C0, control), 0.5% (C0.5), 1% (C1), 2% (C2), and 3% (C3). The catfish used weighed 3.95 ± 0.03 g and were kept in 20 hapa units (2×1×1 m³) with a stocking density of 70 fish/hapa for 60 days. The results indicated significant differences (p<0.05) in the hepatosomatic index between treatments, with the highest values recorded in C1 (2.15 ± 0.10b) and C0.5 (1.91 ± 0.19b). However, liver glycogen levels did not significantly vary across treatments (p>0.05). Charcoal supplementation enhanced blood mineral levels (calcium, phosphorus, manganese, and zinc) in the C2 and C3 groups. The highest blood glucose level was observed in C1 (p<0.05). Intestinal histological analysis showed that the highest villi height and surface area were recorded in the C2 group, with values of 540.0 ± 10.2 µm and 34.122 ± 1.311 µm², respectively. Additionally, 2% charcoal supplementation improved final weight, daily growth rate, and protein retention, while reducing feed consumption and the feed conversion ratio compared to the control. Overall, the inclusion of 2% charcoal positively influenced the intestinal histology of catfish, contributing to enhanced growth performance. The study also demonstrated that charcoal addition affected the hepatosomatic index, blood glucose, and blood mineral levels in catfish. Abstract

This research evaluated the effect of taurine-enriched rotifers on the survival and growth of milkfish larvae. Twenty-five fertilized milkfish eggs were placed in a 250 L cylindrical fiber tank. This study used a completely randomized design with four treatments and five replications. Three days old larvae were given rotifers enriched with taurine at 0, 25, 50, or 75 mg/L. Larvae were cultured until they were 18 days old. The results showed that the taurine content in rotifers was higher in rotifer at 50 mg/L treatment, then decreased at the 75 mg/L treatment. Taurine content in the milkfish larvae aligned with taurine levels in rotifers. Furthermore, the taurine content in rotifers affected milkfish larvae' survival and body length. The highest larval survival and growth was obtained in the 50 mg/L taurine treatment. Thus, it can be concluded that taurine at 50 mg/L is the optimal rotifer enrichment dose for milkfish larvae. Abstract

Cinnamon leaves contain active compounds such as polyphenols and flavonoids which have antioxidant properties and play a role in lipid metabolism processes. This active substance is known to reduce liver fat levels and has the potential to increase the immune response in catfish. This research aims to determine the effect of adding cinnamon leaf extract to feed on liver fat levels and the health of catfish. Cinnamon leaf extract was added to the feed at five different doses, namely 0 g/kg (control), 0.5 g/kg, 1 g/kg, 2 g/kg, and 4 g/kg feed. The results of the study showed that the addition of cinnamon leaf extract to the feed reduced the fat content in the liver of catfish as seen from the decrease in fat degeneration in the liver of catfish compared to the control. Total erythrocytes, hemoglobin levels and hematocrit levels of fish treated with the addition of cinnamon leaf extract to the feed were lower and significantly different (P<0.05) compared to controls, but total leukocytes were not significantly different between treatment and control.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to test dietary supplementation of yacon leaf on the carbohydrate utilization, growth performance, and glucose tolerance of striped catfish during the early-stage period. Fish were fed with five different levels of yacon leaf supplementation (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%) for nine weeks. Three hundred striped catfish (initial mean body weight: 14 ± 0.14 g) were maintained in 15 rectangular net cages. The results showed that the specific growth rate of fish with yacon leaf supplementation (3.46-3.79%) was higher than the control fish (3.19%) also the feed efficiency value. The highest protein retention was found on 1% yacon leaf fish diet, while the highest lipid retention was found on 1.5%. The blood glucose post-prandial was rise slower than the control fish. The glucose tolerance test also obtained less time to return to basal level after the glucose load. The increased of enzymatic were also present at the supplemented fish. The liver lipid and glycogen concentration was decreased, and the hepatic somatic index was increased. The blood biochemistry showed the lower level of total protein plasma and albumin in supplemented fish, and higher triglyceride and cholesterol levels due to the replenishment of energy storage in adipose tissues while fasting. Therefore, this study concludes that the yacon leaf dietary supplementation has the potential to improve carbohydrate utilization by promoting glucose use efficiently as the main energy, while protein can be utilized for growth. Our data suggest that the best level of yacon leaf supplementation in fish diets is 1.36%.

Striped catfish meat has a high-fat content which is undesirable to markets and customers alike and needs to be reduced. This study aims to evaluate the effect of dietary L-carnitine and cinnamon powder on reducing the fat content of striped catfish meat in the grow-out stage. Striped catfish measuring 125.4 ± 7.85 g and 24.71 ± 0.68 cm body length were kept for 60 days in a hapa with size 2 x 1 x 1 m3. Thefish were fed three times a day at satiation with the following treatments: control (K), the addition of L-carnitine 1 g kg-1 (LK 1), L-carnitine 2 g kg-1 (LK 2), cinnamon 5 g kg-1 (KM 5) and cinnamon 10 g kg-1 (KM 10). Sampling was conducted on the initial, middle and final day for meat fat content analysis. The parameters observed were meat fat and meat texture. The results showed that dietary KM 10 significantly reduced meat fat content compared to controls on the 30th and it showed a more significant reduction, namely 51.06% and 42.55%, in the treatment LK 2 and KM 10 after 60 days treatment. The hepatosomatic index value also decreased, followed by decreased liver fat levels. The lower values of meat hardness imply an increase in meat quality. It can be concluded that the application of dietary cinnamon powder at 10 g kg-1 (KM 10) is the best level to reduce the fat content of striped catfish meat in meeting the fillet standards. This cinnamon has excellent potential to be developed as a feed additive to improve the quality of striped catfish meat in the rearing phase.

Abstract

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of phytase supplemented to the diet on phosphorus (P) digestibility and growth performance of the green catfish Hemibagrus nemurus. Five kinds of experimental diets were used in this experiment, namely diets A, B, C, D and E. Diet A, as a control, was supplemented with inorganic P, without phytase supplementation. Diet B, C, D and E were supplemented with 0, 20, 40 and 60 mg phytase/100 g soybean meal (SBM), respectively, without inorganic P supplementation. Fifteen fish with initial body weight of 6.9 + 0.2 g were stocked into each 60-l aquarium. Fish were fed on the diets for 60 days. Results indicated that P digestibility increased from 64.5% to 87.0% as phytase supplement increased from 0 mg in diet B to 60 mg phytase/100 g SBM in diet E. P digestibility in diet E was higher than that in diet A (77.6%). The daily growth rate and feed conversion ratio followed similar trend. P, Calcium (Ca) and Zinc (Zn) concentration in the whole body and bone of fish fed diet E were higher than the fish fed diet B, C and D, but were insignificant compared to the fish fed diet A. Nitrogen (N) and P loading by fish fed diet E were, respectively, 76% and 20% lower than those in fish fed the control diet. It is concluded that the inclusion of 60 mg phytase/100 g SBM in the diet of the green catfish could replace the utilization of inorganic P increase the digestibility of the diet thereby resulting in increased growth rate and reduced excretion of P and N into the waters. Abstract

ARTICLE HIGLIGHTS- Taurine improves eye development in golden rabbitfish larvae- Enhanced growth performance with taurine-enriched rotifers- Taurine positively impacts fish eye and body growthABSTRACTGolden rabbitfish (Siganus guttatus) is an emerging species for aquaculture industry, despite constrains faced on commercial scale of seed production due to the high mortality during the first-feeding stage. An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of taurine through enrichment of rotifers as live-feed on eye development and growth performance of larval golden rabbitfish. Observation of eye development was carried out by measuring eye diameter of the larva and development of the retina based on histology assessment. Growth performance was measured for absolute growth and fin development of the larvae and survival rate. The results showed that taurine-enriched rotifer generally provided better performances for eye development and growth of larval golden rabbitfish compared with control (without taurine). Increase of taurine dose up to 0.050 g/L resulted in an increase of eye diameter, absolute growth, fin development and survival rate. Further increased increment of the taurine tended to decrease the values of the measured parameters. The eye diameter of larval golden rabbitfish fed with 0.050 g/L taurine-enriched rotifer was significantly wider (106.1±9.8 µm) (P < 0.05) compared with control (58.2±14.3 µm), but did not significantly differ from other doses of taurine (P > 0.05). Body width of larvae fed with 0.050 g/L taurine-enriched rotifer was significantly higher (127.3±14.6 µm) (P < 0.05) compared with control (98.8±18.3 µm).
