Abstract

This study aims to analyze how international media, specifically The Straits Times frames Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka candidacy in the 2024 elections in Indonesia using Robert Entman’s framing theory and the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach by Halliday. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with textual analysis, the study identifies four key framing elements: the defined problem focuses on potential declines in electability due to political controversy; the diagnosed cause points to the Constitutional Court’s revised age requirement; moral judgment appears in the criticism of dynastic politics; and the implied solution emphasizes the need for transparency in political decisions. Meanwhile, the SFL approach reveals that the media’s language choices and sentence structures are not neutral, but instead shape specific representations that can influence public opinion. The use of material processes like “paved the way” and references such as “Jokowi’s brother-in-law” illustrates how language subtly yet effectively builds a particular political narrative. These findings affirm that media not only deliver information but also construct reader perspectives through strategic linguistic choices.

Abstract

The healthcare reality is composed of  biomedical,  naturalistic, and  personalistic systems. Although the three healthcare systems go separately, to some extent they are overlapped. This study aims to explore alternative healing practices in Indonesia based on the personalistic system. The method used is a case study. Data was collected in several big cities (Bandung, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Palembang, Batam and Makassar) in Indonesia through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with stakeholders of healthcare programs on media, interviews with physicians, alternative therapists and patients, observation of alternative therapies, and media content analysis. The results indicate that the healthcare practices based on the personalistic system is widespread throughout Indonesia, including religious treatment (often called ruqyah) involving religious chants and prayers. With some using herbal medicine, a lot of alternative therapies based on the personalistic system have been promoted through word of mouth (interpersonal communication) by common people as patients as well as through the electronic media (especially television), and print media (especially newspapers) in many areas in the country.

Abstract

The human-crocodile conflict frequently happens in Indonesia. Based on the data from http://www.crocodile-attack.info/, it is claimed that Indonesia is a country with the most cases of crocodile attacks. Mostly the attacks involved the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus). On the other hand, this conflict is worsened by the spread of inaccurate information among communities. From October 2019 to October 2021, there were 12 false stories about crocodile attacks. These hoaxes were distributed on social media, causing fear to those who consumed the information. It is crucial to be investigated, especially from the perspective of environmental journalism. This study describes how mainstream media outlets tried to clarify the hoaxes. The results show many materials contained by information disorder, which need to be clarified by the media to ensure clarity and truth for the public. This study finds that most mainstream media still have their conscience to protect the public from false information. It was done by practicing curation journalism that includes the discipline of verification. In conclusion, the media and information sources need to have a good comprehension of crocodile behavior. The research also catches the need for environmental journalism training for media practitioners in Indonesia. Thus, the media will be able to offer the best solution for reducing the attack while at the same time giving adequate education for the public to live in harmony with Indonesian flora and fauna.
