Abstract

The modern era is currently highly dependent on technology in almost all aspects, so the demand for experts in the field of technology is increasing. However, this does not match the situation in schools. Therefore, countries in the world are starting to implement the STEM approach to the national curriculum. This study aims to determine the increased interest in a career in science for students after applying the STEM approach. This research is a quasi-experimental using pretest-post-test control group design. The instrument used scientific career interest questionnaire that refers to the Social Cognitive Career Theory. The results show that the application of STEM through STEM activities such as formulating problems, designing solutions, practicums, and planning projects, will provide knowledge about students' career interests. The increase in students' career interest in science in the material on buffer solutions shows significant results. Environmental aspects more dominantly influence students' career interests with the dominant indicator being school teaching staff. Further research can be carried out to see the increase in students' interest in careers in science after implementing a STEM approach at a larger sample level such as a sample of high school students in a city.

Abstract

This study specifically investigates the impact of an ethnoscience-based Common Knowledge Construction Model (CKCM) learning approach integrated with podcast media on student learning outcomes and collaboration skills, concentrating on chemical bonding. The quasi-experiment research method was conducted in one of the private schools in Sukoharjo Central Java, involving 24 students in control and experimental classes. This research responds to skill demands in the 21st century to develop quality human resources by introducing innovations that integrate culture and technology into a learning system, focusing on enhancing students' soft skills, especially in collaboration. The results of the data analysis show that the learning model significantly influences student learning outcomes. However, the study indicates that this approach results in a slight improvement in students' collaboration abilities. Yet, further exploration and refinement may be necessary to enhance its effectiveness in fostering collaboration skills. This research contributes valuable insights for educators seeking innovative approaches to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in the contemporary education and employment landscape, such as competence, superiority, and competitiveness. Thus, the CKCM learning model has great potential to continue to be developed as a learning model that can answer the challenges of the 21st century.

Abstract

The Spectral Crime Analysis Network (SCAN) game was developed using the ADDIE model, used a hybrid augmented reality embedded game-based learning approach and aligned with the learning standards of ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy. This game is developed as a learning and reinforcement tool in analytical chemistry instrumentation for undergraduate chemistry students. Based on a survey study conducted on 265 respondents, it was found that the SCAN game demonstrated high usability with mean scores of 3.49 (SD = 0.489) for usefulness, 3.49 (SD = 0.474) for ease of use, 3.48 (SD = 0.504) for ease of learning and 3.53 (SD = 0.476) for satisfaction. Overall, SCAN supports cooperative, technology-enhanced game-based learning, fostering greater interactivity and engagement in chemistry education. This innovation is aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal number 4 (SDG4), which is quality education that utilises technology and interactive 21st-century learning.

Abstract

Improving chemical literacy is an important task in learning in the global and sustainable development era. However, chemistry learning at schools still tends to focus on mastering theoretical concepts. Therefore, a learning model that is able to provide meaningful and contextual learning experience is needed, one of which is the experiential learning model. The experiential learning model is considered capable of facilitating students in constructing knowledge and developing chemical literacy skills. This study aims to analyze students’ chemical literacy skills before and after learning using the experiential learning model on the topic of global warming, as well as analyzing their improvement. This study employed a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design and was conducted in two public senior high schools in Sleman Regency, Indonesia, with a sample of 144 Grade X students. Data were collected using chemical literacy tests that had been validated theoretically and empirically. The data were analyzed using a paired t-test and N-gain scores. The results showed a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores, with an improvement in chemical literacy skills in the medium category. These findings indicate that the application of the experiential learning model is effective in improving students’ chemical literacy skills on global warming topics.
