Abstract

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in elementary schools has become a vital approach to enhancing students' holistic development, particularly within the framework of the Merdeka Curriculum. This study aims to identify the implementation strategies, outcomes, and key factors of successful SEL programs in elementary education. Using a systematic literature review of 20 selected articles out of 157, and following the PRISMA method, this study explores patterns and themes related to SEL integration. The findings reveal that SEL is effectively integrated across various subjects and supported by the development of specific SEL-based learning models. Teachers play a central role in the implementation process. The review highlights significant improvements in students’ self-awareness, self-management, and social awareness, along with academic achievements and reductions in negative behaviors. However, few studies reported specific quantitative outcomes, although one study noted a 15% increase in classroom engagement following SEL-based instruction. This study recommends strengthening supportive education policies, offering continuous professional development for teachers, and developing reliable assessment tools to measure SEL competencies effectively.

Abstract

This research explores the integration of ethnoscience within the traditional batik-making process in Sidoarjo as a contextual learning resource for elementary school students. The study aims to identify scientific concepts embedded in local cultural practices and analyze their relevance to the IPAS (Integrated Science and Social Studies) curriculum. Using a qualitative ethnographic method, data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation at Batik Tulis Al-Huda in Sidoarjo. Findings reveal that each stage of the batik process—from molani (sketching motifs), malemi (applying wax), nyolet (coloring), to nglorod (wax removal)—reflects basic scientific principles such as heat transfer, changes in states of matter, diffusion, and evaporation. These concepts align with key IPAS learning objectives at the elementary level. The study highlights how incorporating local wisdom into science education can foster scientific literacy, cultural identity, and contextual understanding among students. The research contributes to the development of culturally responsive teaching strategies and supports the Merdeka Belajar (Freedom to Learn) curriculum by linking classroom content to students’ cultural environment. It is recommended that future studies expand to other regions and examine how ethnoscience-based resources impact student learning outcomes. This study includes 25 references, 7 observation photos, and qualitative analysis tables to support the findings.

Abstract

Science literacy skills are essential skills that need to be developed since elementary school level. However, students' achievement of science literacy is often not optimal, so innovation in learning models is needed. This study aims to analyze the effect of implementing the Think Talk Write (TTW) learning model integrated with learning stages according to Jerome Bruner's theory on the science literacy skills of fifth grade elementary school students. Learning in this study was implemented using a teaching module that carries the theme of local culinary specialties of Porong, namely "Ote-Ote Porong", to provide a relevant context for students. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The research sample consisted of fifth grade students at Sugihwaras Elementary School. The experimental group received treatment in the form of learning with the TTW model assisted by Bruner's theory using the "Ote-Ote Porong" teaching module, while the control group used conventional learning. Science literacy skills data were collected through test instruments (before and after treatment) and analyzed quantitatively using the ANCOVA statistical test. The results showed that there was a significant difference in increasing science literacy skills (p <0.05) between the experimental group and the control group. Students who learn with the TTW model assisted by Bruner's theory through contextual teaching modules show a higher increase in scientific literacy skills compared to students who learn with conventional methods. It is concluded that the Think Talk Write model assisted by Jerome Bruner's theory applied through local culinary-themed teaching modules is effective in improving the scientific literacy skills of fifth grade elementary school students.

Abstract

This research aims to reintroduce local cultural heritage in the form of palm sugar production to the younger generation of Bawean people, especially in Balibak Hamlet. Palm sugar is not only a part of the community's daily life, but also represents hereditary knowledge that is rich in cultural and economic values. Through an ethnographic approach, this research explores in depth the process of making palm sugar, starting from tapping the sap of the palm tree, traditional processing using firewood, to the molding and packaging process using kelaras (dried banana leaves). Data was collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews with sugar makers, and documentation of their daily activities. The results showed that palm sugar making requires not only technical skills, but also patience and thoroughness that are passed down orally from generation to generation. In addition, traditionally produced palm sugar has a more natural and low-glycemic nutritional content, making it a healthier alternative to granulated sugar. Other findings show that palm sugar products have promising economic potential, both in the local market and as a regional specialty product that deserves to be promoted more widely. The research recommends the integration of this local knowledge into contextualized learning for Bawean children and youth, so that this cultural heritage is preserved and provides economic benefits in Bawean.
