Abstract

: This study aims to analyze and compare two major paradigms in qualitative research methodology: the positivist paradigm and the interpretive paradigm. These paradigms differ fundamentally in their ontological, epistemological, and axiological assumptions, which influence how researchers perceive social reality, construct knowledge, and determine methodological approaches. The positivist paradigm emphasizes objectivity, empirical verification, and generalizability, whereas the interpretive paradigm focuses on subjective understanding, social context, and meaning-making. Using a descriptive qualitative approach through literature review, this research explores the strengths and limitations of each paradigm and their relevance in the context of contemporary social research. The findings indicate that paradigm selection must be aligned with the research objectives and the nature of the phenomena being investigated. This study is expected to provide conceptual contributions to researchers in establishing an appropriate methodological foundation for qualitative research.

Abstract

The development of information and communication technologies has significantly influenced the dynamics of cultural preservation in the digital era. Social media, as one of the products of this era, has emerged as a strategic medium for disseminating local cultural values to a broader, interactive, and more efficient audience. Among these platforms, Instagram stands out due to its strong visual orientation, which allows for creative and engaging cultural messaging, particularly targeting younger generations who dominate social media usage. In the context of Batak culture, the Tor-Tor dance represents an intangible cultural heritage with deep symbolic, spiritual, and social values embedded in traditional community structures. This dance functions not only as a form of artistic expression but also as a medium of communication between humans, ancestors, and deities. However, globalization and declining interest among youth have threatened its continuity. In response, the use of social media particularly Instagram accounts like @zonabatak has become a strategic means of preserving and promoting this cultural heritage. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach to examine how the @zonabatak Instagram account utilizes features such as photos, videos, captions, stories, and user interactions to generate cultural awareness and disseminate information related to the Tor-Tor dance. The findings indicate that the account effectively presents visual content and contextualizes the dance in traditional rituals and youth education. In addition to conveying cultural knowledge, the account acts as a digital space for education and promotion, reaching audiences from various backgrounds. Interactive features such as comments and story polls further enhance Instagram’s role as a participatory and dynamic cultural communication platform. Although certain limitations exist such as inconsistent visual quality the account successfully communicates cultural values, stimulates curiosity, and fosters local cultural pride. Thus, @zonabatak serves as a concrete example of how social media can function as a tool for cultural preservation that aligns with contemporary digital communication practices.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the textual and visual message design in Instagram social media posts as a form of identity representation and public communication strategy. The research focuses on the @misshijabsumaterautaraa account, which consistently produces content themed around Muslim women, digital da'wah, and Islamic social values. Using a qualitative approach with content analysis methods, data were collected through documentation of posts and participatory observation conducted from January to April 2025. The findings reveal that the message design on this account integrates visual symbols, religious narratives, and participatory strategies to construct the image of the ideal Muslim woman: devout, modern, and communicative. Caption texts and visual elements work synergistically to build identity narratives, convey values, and encourage audience engagement within an online community. These findings affirm that social media functions not only as a medium of communication but also as a symbolic space rich in ideological meaning and social representation. This study contributes to the development of digital visual communication studies, particularly in the context of da'wah and identity formation in the era of new media.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the presence of community-based organizations and their role as beneficial instruments within society. Majelis taklim (Islamic study groups) are closely intertwined with the social fabric of the community, as every religious gathering (taklim) fosters social interaction either between individuals and congregants or among the congregants themselves. These social interactions frequently lead to broader social activities, both within the taklim community and the general public. However, social interaction and behavior are not always consistent among members of the wider society. It is recognized that when taklim serves as a space for learning and interaction, its participants tend to adopt a more refined and ethical way of life. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using action research methodology, aimed at generating a consistently positive understanding of the research object. Such an approach aligns well with the broader societal perception of Islamic education. The research seeks to identify the methods of Islamic preaching (da’wah) used in the sermons, analyze the content delivered, and examine how the audience (mad’u) applies these teachings in everyday life. The descriptive qualitative method is used to explain phenomena without altering the variables under investigation, relying primarily on discreet interviews for data collection. The primary goal of taklim is to deepen the understanding of its participants. Understanding, in this context, reflects the extent to which an individual comprehends a concept, situation, or fact that is clearly conveyed. This comprehension extends beyond verbal transmission to include mastery of the core issues or facts discussed. The existence of majelis taklim in this regard cannot be simply interpreted by the general public as a mere representation of religious ritual. Its integration into community life has become intrinsic to the participants. In this context, the enthusiasm and awareness of the congregants are evident through their active involvement in various religious activities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between parent-child communication patterns and the impact of gadget use on adolescents’ mental health and behavior. The research method employed is qualitative with a literature review approach, analyzing various relevant sources related to the research topic. The findings indicate that communication patterns between parents and children regarding gadget use are not linear or one-directional but rather conflicting. Gadget use can negatively affect children's mental health, leading to increased anxiety, stress, and gadget addiction. Tensions often arise due to differing perspectives between parents and children, reflecting authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative communication patterns. As a result, conflict becomes an inevitable outcome of excessive or uncontrolled gadget use. Conflict resolution involves providing understanding, effective communication from parents, and education for children so that they can use gadgets more wisely and responsibly.

Abstract

This study examines how the online media outlets Kompas.com and Detik.com frame the news coverage of a sexual violence case at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra (UINSU), using Robert Entman’s framing analysis model. In the context of reporting on sensitive issues such as sexual violence, the media do more than convey information they also shape public perception and influence the direction of social discourse. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with framing analysis to explore four key elements in media narratives: problem definition, causal interpretation, moral evaluation, and treatment recommendation. The findings reveal that Kompas.com adopts a more humanistic and structural approach, emphasizing the victim’s suffering, the role of patriarchal culture, and the need for educational reform. In contrast, Detik.com takes a more legalistic stance, highlighting legal processes and institutional responses to the perpetrator. These differing approaches reflect distinct editorial perspectives and significantly impact how society perceives and responds to sexual violence on campus. Kompas.com constructs a narrative that fosters collective awareness of the need for systemic change, whereas Detik.com reinforces confidence in legal resolutions. These findings demonstrate the influential role of mass media in determining the focus and values of news coverage. The framing employed by media outlets can shape public opinion, influence policy directions, and affect support for victims. Thus, the media are expected to take greater responsibility in crafting narratives that are fair, balanced, and victim-centered, in order to promote more progressive social transformation within higher education environments.
