Abstract

This research was done to determine the levels of hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Ht) of the sumatran elephants captivated at the Elephant Conservation Center (ECC) of Saree, Aceh Besar. In this study blood samples were drawn from 16 sumatran elephants at the ECC using EDTA as an anticoagulant. The levels of Hb and Ht were determined using Sahli and micro-hematocrit methods, respectively. Data was analyzed using t-test. The results showed that Hb concentrations in male and female sumatran elephans were 11.74±0.58 g/dL and 11.84±0.55 g/dL, respectively. Hb levels in sumatran elephants aged 10-30 and 30 years old were 11.87±0.56 g/dL and 11.79±0.50 g/dL, respectively. There was no significant different of Hb levels (P0.05) according to sex and age. Ht values in male sumatran elephants were 38.140.79% and significantly lower (P0.05) than that in female sumatran elephants, 42.001.37%. Similar to that of Hb, Ht values in sumatran elephants aged 10-30 and 30 years old, 40.45±1.21% and 40.22±1.48%, respectively, were not significantly different (P0.05). In conclusion, in the sumatran elephants Hb values were not influenced by sex and age, but Ht values were influenced by sex.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the ability of neem leaf extract to maintain the normal blood profile of white male rat (Rattus norvegicus) infected with Trypanosoma evansi. A total of 24 male white rats were divided into 6 groups. The K0 group as the negative control received no T. evansi infection and no neem leaf extract. Furthermore, K1  group (positive control) only infected with T. evansi,  K2 and K3 were given neem leaf extract 50mg/kg BW and 100mg/kgBW, while K4 and K5 were given neem leaf extract 400mg/KgBW and  K5 800mg/kgBW. The neem leaf extract was administered for 3 consecutive days after infection established. The blood of the rats was collected to determine the amount of erythrocyte and leukocyte, hemoglobin level and hematocrit value. The data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) through SPSS for Windows 16.0. The averages (+SD) of erythrocyte of K0, K1, K2, K3, K4, and K5 were 5,64±0,57; 2,31±1; 1,93±0; 0; 2,55±0,33; and 2,56±0,48. The amount of leukocyte were 4,46±1,09; 4,45±1,91; 5,25±0; 0; 8,42±1,66; and 8,14± 5,17. The value of hemoglobin were 12,00±0,47; 10,50±0,57; 4,30±0; 0; 5,60±0,20; and 9,03±0,66. The level of hematocrit 38,00±1,83; 25,00±9,90; 15±0; 0; 18,00±2,65, and 20,75±1,71. The result showed that the administration of neem leaf extract with doses 400mg/kgBW and 800mg/kgBW were difference significantly (P0.05) compare to the positive control of rats, but could not equalize blood profile of uninfected white male rats

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find an alternative method to prevent the conflict between the orangutan and human with the utilization of audio recording as biofence. The location of this study was in Leuser National Park on Bukit Lawang, Langkat, North Sumatra using 16 orangutans as the subject of this study. The method used in this study was a simulation and playback experiment which were using long call, spontaneous call, predator voice, and siren sound in the audio recording of non-alpha orangutans. The respond was observed using binocular and recorded using camera recorder. The data obtained were analyzed using Krustal Wallist test. The result showed that 87% of orangutan showed an interest in the attractor, on the other hand, 13% showed disinterest to the attractor. The facial expression shown by orangutan was fear, submission, aggression, and worry. The statistical analyzing result showed that long call and the spontaneous call was very significant (P0.01), while the predator and siren voice were insignificant (P0.05). The result can be concluded that long call and spontaneous calls showing the effective result to the alteration of territorial behavior on orangutan and have a potential as a biofence that is used as an alternative method to prevent the conflict between orangutan and human.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui pengaruh ekstrak etanol sarang semut (Myrmecodia sp.) terhadap kadar kolesterol darah tikus putih (Rattus norvegicus) jantan. Dalam penelitian ini digunakan 20 ekor tikus putih jantan umur tiga bulan yang secara klinis dinyatakan sehat. Secara acak, seluruh tikus dibagi menjadi 4 perlakuan, masing-masing terdiri atas lima ekor tikus. Perlakuan K1 adalah kelompok kontrol negatif, K2 adalah kelompok kontrol positif yang diinduksi pakan hiperkolesterolemia, K3 adalah kelompok yang diberi pakan hiperkolesterolemia dan ekstrak etanol sarang semut dengan dosis 100 mg, dan K4 adalah kelompok yang diberi pakan hiperkolesterolemia dan ekstrak etanol sarang semut dengan dosis 200 mg. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan analisis varian (ANAVA) dan dilanjutkan dengan uji Duncan. Rata-rata kadar kolesterol setelah perlakuan pada K1; K2; K3; dan K4 masing-masing adalah 11,88±0,94; 26,30±1,37; 14,66±1,50; dan 10,86±0,17 mg/dl. Hasil analisis statistik menunjukkan bahwa pemberian estrak etanol sarang semut berpengaruh sangat nyata (P0,01) terhadap penurunan kadar kolesterol tikus putih yang diinduksi pakan hiperkolesterolemia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian ekstrak etanol sarang semut 100 dan 200 mg dapat menurunkan kadar kolesterol tikus putih jantan. Dosis 200 mg lebih baik dalam menurunkan kadar kolesterol tikus putih jantan yang mengalami hiperkolesterolemia.

Abstract

This research aims to know the accuracy of transcutaneus ultrasonography (USG) to determine number of kacang goat (Capra sp.) foetal. The animals used in this research were 6 goats aged of 1.5-2.5 years old, have a normal estrus cycle and mated naturally. The inspection was conducted after 53 to 97 days of pregnancy. The results showed that two goats were diagnosed as positive single pregnant (one foetus), and the others (four goats) were diagnosed as positive multiple pregnant (two foetus). Two goats were diagnosed single pregnant confirmed at delivered time in which all goats gave birth to one goat. All of the goats diagnosed positive multiple pregnant were gave birth to two goats. The accuracy of using transcutaneus USG to determine the number of single foetus and twins are 100%.Key words: ultrasonography, transcutaneus, accuracy, kacang goat, foetus

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out the potential vectors of avian filariasis in four locations where chickens were found infected by avian filaria. The samples used in this study were blood-sucking insect vectors that were caught using a light trap. The four locations were namely Limpok, Lamreung, Tungkop (District of Aceh Besar), and Lampriet (Banda Aceh City). The insects obtained were dissected to find microfilaria in their bodies. The data obtained in this study were analyzed descriptively. The results obtained from the arrests were 141 mosquitoes and a total of 313 gnats. Based on the results of the identification of mosquitoes found in the four dominating locations, namely Culex spp. as much as (72.3%), while the gnat obtained were of the genus Culicodes spp. From the results of the mosquitoes and gnats section, microfilariae were not found. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that from the four locations only two vectors were found, namely Culex spp. and Culicoides spp.

Abstract

This study was done to determine blood chemistry of local swamp buffaloes in Aceh. Blood samples were collected from 15 local buffaloes slaughtered at the abattoir of Banda Aceh and 16 local buffaloes slaughtered at the abattoir of Aceh Besar using EDTA as an anticoagulant. Measurement of uric acid, cholesterol and glucose levels was done using Easy Touch rapid test whereas hemoglobin concentration was determined using Sahli method. Data obtained was analyzed by t-test using GraphPad Prims 6 software. The results showed that concentration of uric acid, cholesterol, glucose and hemoglobin in the blood of local swamp buffaloes were 13.80±3.62 mg/dl, 139.50±39.71 mg/dl, 81.81±21.34 mg/dl, and 10.86±2.78 g/dl, respectively. In the male local buffaloes, the level of uric acid, cholesterol, glucose and Hb were 12.23±3.94 mg/dl, 126.10±33.99 mg/dl, 73.58±22.54 mg/dl, and Hb 11.20±3.86 g/dl, respectively. For female local buffaloes, uric acid level was 14.59±3.29 mg/dl, cholesterol was 147.70±41.61 mg/dl, glucose was 87.00±19.35 mg/dl, and Hb was 10.64±1.91 g/dl. Statistical analysis indicated that there was no difference in the chemistry profiles in the blood of local swamp buffaloes of Aceh according to sex.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to detect the glucose in urine of Canis familiaris as a medical record and  a supporting early diagnostic. Urine of thirty local dogs collected from Lamposi Tigo Nagori, Sumatera Barat. Before feeding, urine was collected individually in the morning two times. This study was doing on January 2016. The strip test was soaked in urine (5-10 ml) for 30 second directly. Data of glucose was analyzed using 4 scale discoloration of semi quantitative striptest. The result showed that glucose was not detected on 25 dogs out of 30 of  C. familiaris. Amount of 5 C. familiaris were detected the presence of glucose with small (100 mg/dl) scale. We concluded that the levels of glucose C. familiaris urine performed on the tolerance limits of glucose level.

Abstract

This research was done to determine albumin and globulin levels of Sumatran elephants’ blood at the Elephant Conservation Center (ECC) of Saree, Aceh Besar. In this study blood samples were collected from 6 Sumatran elephants at the ECC. The levels of albumin and globulin were determined spectrophotometrically. The data obtained were analyzed by t-test. The results showed that the average levels of albumin and the globulin of Sumatran elephants were 4, 25±0, 31 g/dL and 2, 33±0, 62 g/dL. Blood albumin and globulin levels of male Sumatran elephants were 4.23±0.05 g/dL and 2.36±0.77 g/dL, respectively; and those of female Sumatran elephants were 4.16±0.49 g/dL and 2.30±0.60 g/dL, respectively. The results of data analysis using t-test showed that blood levels of albumin or globulin of male and female Sumatran elephants were not significantly different (P 0.05). In conclusion, in the Sumatran elephants, blood albumin and globulin levels were not influenced by sex.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat bertujuan meningkatkan pengetahuan peternak tentang kerugian yang diakibatkan oleh ketiadaan pemeriksaan kebuntingan dan meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan inseminator tentang metode pemeriksaan kimia urin. Kelompok sasaran dari kegiatan ini adalah 15 (lima belas) orang masyarakat petani peternak sapi di Desa Lampuuk Kecamatan Kuta Baro Kabupaten Aceh Besar dan 2 (dua) orang inseminator di wilayah setempat. Pelaksanaan kegiatan ini dilakukan dengan 2 metode, yaitu (1) metode pendidikan dan penyuluhan dan (2) demonstrasi dan pelatihan di lapangan. Pada kegiatan penyuluhan, peternak akan diajarkan tentang kerugian akibat ketiadaan diagnosis kebuntingan. Kepada inseminator setempat diperkenalkan cara dan alat/bahan yang diperlukan untuk diagnosis kebuntingan. Pada kegiatan demonstrasi akan dilakukan pemeriksaan urin sapi yang telah diinseminasi buatan. Dari hasil kegiatan disimpulkan bahwa pengetahuan peternak tentang kerugian yang diakibatkan oleh ketiadaan pemeriksaan kebuntingan meningkat dan inseminator terampil melakukan diagnosis kebuntingan melalui pemeriksaan kimia urin.
