Abstract

This study investigates the translation practices of English Literature students, focusing on their application of theoretical frameworks in translating texts from English and Indonesian. While translation theory is typically taught in academic settings, students often deviate from the prescribed methods during practical exercises, especially when restricted to using only manual dictionaries and prohibited from utilizing electronic translation tools. Using Nida and Taber’s (1982) translation model, which includes the stages of analysis, transfer, and restructuring, this qualitative study aims to explore the translation processes employed by nine active students in an English Literature class. Data were collected through questionnaires administered to all 14 students, with nine providing valid responses. The findings show that the choice of source language significantly influenced the translation strategies used. For English texts, seven students reversed the typical sequence of translation steps, starting with transfer, followed by analysis and restructuring, while two students adhered to the traditional order. In contrast, when translating Indonesian texts, students tended to follow a more structured translation process, although one student did not complete the restructuring stage. This study not only provides valuable insights into how students engage with the translation process but also offers important implications for EFL translation instructors and researchers. Understanding how the source language affects translation practices can inform teaching strategies and enhance our approach to translation studies in the broader context of language education.

Abstract

This community service activity is based on the problems and needs of English teachers at SMA PGRI Pekanbaru City. The problem is that many students hesitate to speak English because they are afraid of making mistakes due to lack of vocabulary. The main focus of this activity is to provide support for effective learning methods in building an English vocabulary arsenal in the classroom without having to burden students to memorize a number of new vocabularies, such as the typical way of teaching vocabulary that is often carried out in many schools in Pekanbaru City. For this reason, the implementing team considered it necessary to carry out community service to all English teachers and students at SMA PGRI Pekanbaru City in the form of socialization and short training on gamification of English teaching that combines the Vocabulary Chain game and Three-sentence Storytelling, and accompanied by discussions and questions and answers to the participants of the activity. As a result, from the interpretation of the findings through the pre-test and post-test questionnaires, it was found that the activity succeeded in opening the teachers' insights into the depth of the potential of the two games that had been carried out for a long time but had not been very effective in encouraging students to dare to speak up so far.

Abstract

Academic anxiety in students is a concern for education. The problem that arises is the high level of academic anxiety among students, which is caused by several factors. Ottens believes that academic anxiety arises when a person experiences disturbances in thought patterns, behavior, and physiological responses due to feelings of excessive worry about academic performance. It consists of 4 dimensions, namely anxiety that results in mental activity (patterns of anxiety-engendering mental activity), forms of interest that show the wrong direction (misdirected attention), physical distress (physiological distress), and inappropriate actions (inappropriate behaviors). It will reduce students’ learning motivation, so they tend to look for alternative ways to overcome their academic anxiety, for example, in a negative way, namely making cheat sheets during exams, which will reduce their academic integrity. Therefore, researchers will measure students’ academic anxiety levels at SMAN 75. The data in this study was obtained from 254 students at SMAN 75. Test the validity of this instrument using LISREL and Amos software with the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) program. The results stated that of 27 items in this instrument, three were irrelevant or invalid. So, if you drop it, you are left with 24 items that are only one aspect.
