Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini didasari dengan adanya permasalahan dan kebutuhan guru-guru SMKN 1 Kandis dalam hal model pembelajaran berbasis Information and Communication of Technology (ICT). Para guru di sekolah mitra memiliki pengetahuan yang minim terhadap model pembelajaran berbasis ICT. Seiring dengan hal tersebut, kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini dilakukan selama kurang lebih 6 bulan, mulai dari melakukan tahap analisis situasi, melakukan kegiatan sosialisasi, hingga pembuatan luaran kegiatan pengabdian. Kegiatan analisis situasi berupa observasi lapangan dan wawancara kepada guru, kemudian kegiatan sosialisasi meliputi tahap pengenalan awal berupa pemaparan materi tentang model pembelajaran berbasis Microsoft Teams dan disertai dengan diskusi dan tanya jawab kepada peserta kegiatan. Berdasarkan dari respon angket menggambarkan bahwa kegiatan sangat bermanfaat bagi peserta. Hal itu tergambar dari peningkatan persentase pengetahuan guru setelah mengikuti kegiatan. Sebelum pelatihan diperoleh gambaran pengetahuan guru secara umum berada pada kategori cukup baik dengan rata-rata 54.25. Sedangkan setelah dilaksanakan pelatihan, secara umum berada pada kategori baik dengan rata- rata 78.5. Berdasarkan data tersebut dapat diketahui bahwa pemahaman guru mengenai pelatihan penerapan model pembelajaran berbasis Microsoft Teams di SMKN 1 Kandis meningkat dari 54.25% menjadi 78.5%. Berdasarkan analisis data yang dilakukan maka dapat ditarik kesimpulan bahwa pelatihan penerapan model pembelajaran berbasis Microsoft Teams bermanfaat bagi guru SMKN 1 Kandis.

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing bagi pemelajar Indonesia, meskipun bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing, mahasiswa bahasa Inggris harus memahami semua mata pelajaran yang diberikan dalam program studi mereka. Ibaratnya TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) merupakan mata kuliah wajib yang harus diperoleh mahasiswa semester 6 di Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (FKIP) Uniersitas Lancang Kuning (UNILAK) sebelum mahasiswa calon guru praktik mengajar di sekolah pada semester 7. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kemampuan siswa dalam mengajar di mata kuliah TEFL. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah kemampuan siswa dalam keterampilan mengajar dikategorikan baik pada pra pembelajaran yaitu sebesar 29% dapat dikategorikan baik. Pra pembelajaran meliputi cara membuka kelas dengan baik, memberikan salam, memeriksa kehadiran siswa dan memberikan pemanasan. Sedangkan kategori sedang yaitu pada keterampilan menutup yaitu sekitar 23%. Keterampilan penutup meliputi, kemampuan siswa bahasa Inggris dalam menyimpulkan materi, memberikan umpan balik. Sedangkan untuk kegiatan inti sebesar 24% meliputi kemampuan siswa dalam menjelaskan materi, mengelola kegiatan kelas, dan memberikan minat siswa. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam keterampilan mengajar dikategorikan baik di semua komponen, siswa bahasa Inggris mampu memahami aktivitas- aktivitas di dalam keterampilan mengajar.

Abstract

This research was conducted at MTs Negeri 2 Pekanbaru based on phenomenon that most of the students were less vocabulary. The purpose of this research was to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery by using ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method as a teaching method and factor that influence it. The research was a Classroom Action Research. The total number of the sample was 30 students at grade VIII.1 of MTs Negeri 2 Pekanbaru. The researcher did the research in one cycle (five meetings including the test). The data was collected by using vocabulary test, observation checklist, and field notes. There was improvement from based score to cycle 1. In the based score, noun was 65.32, verb was 69.32, adjective 65.32, and adverb was 66.64 with average score 66.67. The result of cycle 1, noun 74.64, and verb was 81.32, adjective was 76.64, and adverb was 82.This research, showed that there were some factors influencing their improvement. The students were engaged in activities, having fun, and active in learning process. The teacher’s approach in explaining material was clear enough and classroom condition as well as method supported the learning achievement. After conducting this research by using ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method improved in cycle 1. Referring to the result, researcher concluded that ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

Reading comprehension can be done using online sources such as internet, Narrative text can be easily obtained by students on various internet sites in the form of links that are already available. The purpose of this study was to determine the reading comprehension ability of fourth semester students of English Education Department of Universitas Lancang Kuning in narrative texts. This research is descriptive quantitative using online sources. This study used total sampling technique with 70 students who are divided into 3 classes in the English Education Department. Based on results of data analysis, it was found that the students of English Education Department had medium (10.00) ability to comprehend narrative texts. This is indicated by the fact that 24 (34.3%) of students have medium ability to comprehend narrative texts. 29 (41.4%) of students had low ability in scanning the text and mentioning the orientation. 29 (41.4%) of students had low ability in mentioning the complication of the text. 25 (35.7%) of students had low ability in determining and mentioning resolution of the text. 38 (54.3%) of students had medium ability in skimming and determining generic structure, language features, social functions of the text. So, it can be concluded that the fourth semester students’ reading comprehension ability in narrative texts was in medium category with the percentage 54.3%.

Abstract

Nowadays, ICT has huge potential to facilitate learning now, where online learning is as central media in education. Class activities directly is prohibited by government because spreading pandemic covid 19 in the world. This study aims at finding lecturers’ perceptions in using ICT as teaching and learning. This study used qualitative method. The data collection was done through a survey questionnaires consisting of open ended questions. The result of this research showed that the implementation ICT as learning media is effective. ICT helps teachers to be creative, it helps an easy in preparing the material for teaching. It can be concluded that ICT is very important to support teaching and learning process.

Abstract

This community service is based on the needs of the teachers at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) Al-Barokah Pekanbaru in improving and enriching their knowledge about English Language Learning Strategy. Based on the needs analysis, most the teachers at the school feel that their knowledge about teaching strategy is still less, therefore their knowledge should be improved more. Based on this thing, the team needs to conduct workshop which aims at improving as well as enriching the teachers knowledge towards teaching strategy by using Word Chain Game. This activity done in one day which has been divided into 2 sessions. In the first session, the teachers were provided with the knowledge of Word Chain Game. Then, in the second session the teachers were asked to apply the strategy based on the previous explanation. After conducting the workshop, it can be stated that the teachers are able to understand well the implementation of Word Chain Game, and they are able to apply it in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

This classroom action research (CAR) aims at developing students’ intercultural competence (ICC) and exploring English language learning models integrated to ICC on the basis of websites use as the learning resource. This research was conducted in Intensive Course online class involving 24 students of English study program in Universitas Lancang Kuning. This CAR was conducted in one cycle consisting of 6 meetings and 2 evaluations. The data was collected from (1) observation fieldnotes, (2) observation checklist, (3) collecting documents (students’ comments and accessed websites, and (4) the scores taken from the 5 groups’ discussion. This research reveals the students’ ICC dimensions development exhibited in their class discussions with the increasing percentage from 46.15% to 92.30%). Some language learning models integrated to ICC on the basis of websites use were identified: (1) Accessing websites related to ICC learning topics, and (2) accessing websites that provide authentic materials (texts, pictures, audio-videos, and (3) motivating students to communicate and collaborate with others via online learning media. This CAR concludes that “students’ ICC could be developed through language learning on the basis of websites use which contains ICC dimensions”.

Abstract

The world of education currently requires students to study from home through online learning because of the covid 19 pandemic. Online learning has been going on for almost 2 years so learning is no longer face-to-face. Students faced some problems when they should learn interpretive Listening courses through online learning. One of the problems such as; Students got some difficulties understanding the material. This is the concern of researchers to analyze students’ learning outcomes in an interpretive listening course during online learning. This research approach uses descriptive quantitative utilizing descriptive statistics. There were 55 students who participated in this research. The data was gathered by an online test. The test is available at https://www.examenglish.com. The result suggests students had an average of score 69.4 of the total sample, namely 55 students. Then there is a minimum or lowest score of 30 and the highest is 77. This score has conversion based on score of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Therefore, it indicated that student learning outcomes in interpretive listening courses can be categorized as advanced. Where they have an advanced level in understanding and comprehending of listening activities.  Even with limited facilities and sometimes unsupported internet networks, the learning outcome was running well.

Abstract

This content analysis research highlights 21st-Century/4Cs skills that characterize the quality of teaching materials integrated to culture in higher education institutions. This research was grounded from teaching documents obtained from the English lecturers, Faculty of Education and Vocational Studies (FADIKSI), Universitas Lancang Kuning, Indonesia from February until July, 2022. The research context was based on teaching documents (teaching syllabus and semester tests) with 4C skills’ integration. There were 16 collected teaching documents consisting of 8 teaching syllabus and 8 semester tests. The checklist of 21st-Century Skills/4Cs rubric covers “Communication”, “Creativity”, “Critical Thinking”, and “Collaboration” was adapted from the CTE Career Ready Practices. This research reveals the integration of 4Cs skills analyzed from teachers’ teaching syllabus and semester tests documents reached the levels of “Meet Competency” and “Approaching competency” levels. This portrait represents teachers’ adequate understanding of 21st-Century skills/4Cs skills. The further research recommends teachers provide and develop classroom environments of 21st-Century skills integrated to culture in the area of teacher professional development.

Abstract

Mangroves are coastal ecosystems that are rich in diversity of flora and fauna. Mangroves have an important role in coastal areas in terms of ecology, biology, and economy. However, mangrove management has not balanced these three aspects and tends to be exploited for economic purposes. The purpose of this study was to map the distribution of mangroves, identify changes and zoning of mangroves in the Percut Sei Tuan subdistrict. The method used in this research is a survey method. Collecting data from Landsat Multitemporal images in 2017 and 2021 as well as field data through observation. Data analysis was performed using Envi and Arc GIS software. The results showed that the distribution of mangroves was found along the coast of Percut Sei Tuan District. The decline in mangrove ecosystems occurred in the period 2017 and 2021. Mangrove zoning in this area is in accordance with other mangrove zoning in Indonesia, which consists of open mangroves, transitional mangroves, brackish mangroves, and mangroves close to the mainland. The diversity of mangrove species in the form of true mangroves and associated mangroves was also found on the coast of Percut Sei Tuan District.
