Abstract

Background: Gestational weight gain that does not follow the standards can cause long-term problems for maternal and fetal outcomes. Research has found that most pregnant women cannot achieve gestational weight gain according to health standards. Objectives: This review explores the perspectives of pregnant women and antenatal care providers regarding gestational weight gain and nutritional needs. Methods: A systematic review follows the PRISMA guidelines. Several databases were accessed, namely PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect databases, using a combination of the following Medical Subject Heading terms and relevant keywords. The inclusion criteria applied were studies written in English, evaluating the relevant topics, providing full text, and the study was published starting in 2019-2023. Results: A total of 12 articles were reviewed. Respondents were midwives, family doctors, obstetricians, health trainers, administrative officers, and pregnant and postpartum women. The nutritional status of pregnant women studied included normal and obese pregnant women. Obstacles encountered in counseling are patient attitudes, sociocultural issues (sensitive issues), accessibility of resources, and lack of communication training with patients and across professions. Sociocultural, economic status, and interpersonal factors such as social support influence patient beliefs, attitudes, and experiences. Patients may remember their positive experiences in health facilities, but there is also a fear of discrimination they face. Conclusions: This study finds the need for training in counseling and cross-professional communication techniques to health service providers regarding gestational weight gain. Appropriate counseling increases patient comfort during pregnancy and prevents adverse effects that arise during and after pregnancy.

Abstract

Background: The population of elderly worldwide is increasing unnoticed, including in Indonesia. The world's population is aging, and many elderly people experience age-related malnutrition, including deficiencies in some micronutrients. Malnutrition in the elderly is a serious condition when the nutritional needs of the elderly do not match their food intake.   Objectives: This systematic review broadly reviews various micronutrient problems and health impacts on the elderly in several countries. Methods: Systematic review following PRISMA guidelines. Several databases have been accessed; the PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect databases use a combination of MESH terms and relevant keywords. The inclusion criteria applied were studies written in English, evaluating relevant topics, providing full text, and published studies from 2017-2022 Discussion: Many disorders associated with aging are related to micronutrient deficiencies. Various factors cause micronutrient deficiencies in the elderly, but inadequate food intake is the main factor influencing this deficiency. Nutritional deficiencies experienced by the elderly are closely related to decreased immune function. The results of this review explain that the elderly experience malnutrition due to a lack of the following nutrients: vitamin D, folic acid, calcium, and vitamin B12. Conclusions: Micronutrient deficiency in the elderly causes a variety of comorbidities that reduce the elderly's quality of life in old age, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, electrolyte imbalance, dementia, and anemia. The development of food-based dietary guidelines and health promotion regarding elderly nutrition in several countries should be recommended, and it is also necessary to update national food intake references.

Abstract

Background: The development of Industry 4.0 makes it easy to access everything, such as food and beverages. Online food order platforms are often used among students nowadays. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused changes in purchasing behavior through online order services, especially with the policy of limiting community activities. Beverages such as boba, several types of tea, and coffee are often ordered online. Consumption for a long time and high frequency can increase body mass index, obesity, and the risk of non-communicable diseases. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the impact of the development of online ordering behavior of consuming sweet drinks (SSB) during the COVID-19 pandemic among college students in Surabaya, Indonesia. Methods: This was an observational study using a Mixed Method research design. A quantitative study with a Cross-Sectional research design and a qualitative study through an FGD was done. Results: Based on the results of the descriptive test, it was shown that tea was the most frequently purchased (daily) through online orders (12.95%). Discount greatly influences the respondents' reasons for ordering online (68.4%). Through FGD, most respondents considered promos being the biggest motivation to order. Conclusions: Currently, most 'modern' drinks are included in the SSB category. Consumption of SSB with repeated frequency for a long time will impact nutritional status. Government policies and related parties are needed to minimize the impact of SSB consumption habits, especially with the current pandemic.

Abstract

Background: Stunting and underweight are still nutritional problems in toddlers in the world. In 2022, the number of stunting and wasting in Indonesia is still high. There are many factors that influence undernutrition, both external and internal factors in the Tengger community. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between family characteristics, exclusive breastfeeding history, birth history, and birth attendants with the incidence of stunting and underweight in children under-5 of the Tengger Community. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study, which samples consisted of 100 mothers of children under-5 in the traditional territory of Tengger Community, taken by the random sampling technique. Data on family characteristics, exclusive breastfeeding, birth history and birth attendants were collected using questionnaires, the nutritional status of mothers and toddlers by measuring body weight and height directly, and food consumption patterns, compiled using the SQ-FFQ sheet and a food recall. Then, the chi-square analysis was utilized to scrutinize those data. Results: No significant associations between family characteristics, breastfeeding history, birth history, and birth attendant with nutritional status of under-fives were found in W/A and H/A (p-value>0.05). Only fat intake had a significant association with W/A in under-fives (p-value=0.03) of all nutrients. Conclusions: Energy and macronutrient intake were mostly in deficit, but only fat intake was associated with underweight. Therefore, macronutrient intake needs to be increased.

Abstract

Background: The eating habits and lifestyles of adolescents are strongly influenced by their culture. Adolescents from Tengger tribe may be affected by external cultural influences, as their area is a famous tourism destination. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the cultural influences on the eating habits and lifestyles of Tengger adolescents. Methods: This qualitative study involved interviews with 15 Tengger adolescents as key informants and the Head of Wonokitri Village. The variables examined include Tengger tribal culture, external cultural influences on eating habits, and various lifestyle aspects such as fashion choices, socialization behaviors, smoking, alcohol consumption, and gadget usage. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations of adolescent habits and analyzed using inductive analysis. Results: The results showed that Tengger adolescents still strongly adhere to their cultural customs. However, external cultural influences are also evident, as seen in their growing preference for fast food, evolving fashion styles, social interactions, smoking habits, alcohol consumption, and gadget use. Conclusions: The study concludes that, while Tengger adolescents continue to uphold their local culture, they are also indirectly influenced by external cultural elements in their eating habits, fashion choices, social behaviors, smoking, alcohol consumption, and gadget use. Therefore, it is recommended that Tengger adolescents critically evaluate which cultural influences have a positive impact on their lifestyles.
