Abstract

The descriptive study analyzed the skills of vocational school students with low, medium, and high levels of mathematical anxiety in terms of their problem-solving abilities. It used a qualitative approach to examine the various mathematical content strands and scientific contexts of the learners. Its findings were based on the notion of the problem-solving stage by Polya, Newman,  as well as Krulik and Rudnik. The data collected during the study was gathered through a written test, which involved asking the participants to complete a questionnaire about their mathematical anxiety levels before they were asked to solve numeracy problems. The results of the study revealed that students with high levels of anxiety were more prone to experiencing problems with problem-solving. The findings of this study are valuable to mathematics educators and researchers. It is also expected to contribute to the development of effective problem-solving strategies for students.

Abstract

Mathematics and culture are two things that are closely related to the activities of daily human life. Because Mathematics is a form of culture that is integrated in all people's lives. This means that, in culture we can find various kinds of mathematical concepts called ethnomathematics. Shibori is a technique of manipulating cloth originating from Japan, to create patterns through a dyeing method that has been around since the 8th century. The patterns created in Shibori generally depict an asymmetrical shape. In the Shibori motif there are several mathematical elements, one of which is the Frieze Group pattern. The Frieze Group is a subgroup of a symmetry group that is constructed by translation in one direction. The Frieze pattern has 7 (seven) types of patterns consisting of isometric combinations and can be classified as cyclic or dihedral groups. This study is an ethnographic study, with exploration and documentation of Shibori. The data analysis technique chosen is interview, observation and documentation. The research subjects were Shibori fabric craftsmen in Tulungagung district, East Java. The purpose of this research is to further examine the cultural patterns of Shibori Traditional cloth into Frieze patterns, as a way to understand mathematics through culture. The results of the research conducted have shown that there are mathematical concepts (geometry) in the Shibori motif, namely the Frieze pattern F1, F2, F3, F5, F6, F7. Abstract

This research is a qualitative descriptive study that aims to describe the mathematical literacy of high school students with a systematic and intuitive cognitive style in solving PISA model questions. The cognitive style test, cognitive style inventory, and mathematics ability test were used to select research subjects. One student with a systematic cognitive style and one with an intuitive cognitive style were selected with equivalent mathematical abilities and the same gender. The results of the mathematical literacy test and test-based interviews were used to collect data on students' mathematical literacy. Time triangulation was used to test the credibility of the findings obtained. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research results show that in formulating problems, systematic students identify the information obtained from the two questions in more detail and are more careful in understanding the questions, while intuitive students identify the necessary information to solve the problem in general. In applying problems, systematic students design and use strategies to find solutions, identifying known information from the problem first, while intuitive students create and use strategies to find solutions and solve problems using the concept of comparison. For the interpreting aspect, the two students reinterpreted the mathematical results they obtained into contextual problems, stated the truth of the answers they obtained, and provided arguments to support their answers.

Abstract

Abstraction is fundamental in mathematics learning because students can discover the studied concepts through abstraction. Bibliometric analyses of abstraction research in mathematics education have yet to be published. A bibliometric analysis is conducted to explore trends in abstraction research. The mathematics education researchers will gain insights from studying the development of abstraction research over the last fifteen years. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the primary journals published, the most productive authors, universities, and countries and to identify current trends in abstraction research. Data were collected from the Scopus database and analysed using VOSviewer and R software. A thorough review was conducted on 271 articles published between 2008 and 2022. The collected data was analysed and presented using R studio and VOSviewer software. The publication of abstraction research has increased every year. Abstraction studies related to geometry, computational thinking, and preschool are trend and abstraction studies related to gesture, preschool child, arithmetic, physiology, mathematical concepts, geometry, language, and cognition. Abstraction research is exciting because it will still trend until 2022. This study offers valuable insights to researchers interested in mathematics education for exploring alternative research directions to the primary research trends. Based on these results, recommendations for further research are given so that they can explore various options for research trends.

Spatial abilities support understanding of the geometric world. This study aims to describe the profile of elementary school students' spatial abilities, especially spatial visualization, with high mathematical skills in solving geometric problems. The subjects in this study were students of grade VI SD. The results of this research using a qualitative approach using spatial ability indicators adapted from Lawrie's research were carried out by using the time triangulation method, namely comparing test results from students and their interviews with test results that were equivalent to tests and interviews at different times. The results of this study indicate that high ability students have different spatial visualization abilities in solving geometry problem solving tasks. Keywords: Spatial Ability, Spatial Visualization, Elementary School Geometry, Elementary Mathematics

Abstract

One of the cultural outcomes of the Madurese community is the traditional tanean lanjang house with a long front yard, designed from several batih (nuclear) families, consisting of a married couple with unmarried children. This study explores geometric concepts of the traditional house to demonstrate how they can be useful for learning mathematics. The descriptive qualitative study described the mathematical concepts found in the tanean lanjang traditional house or settlement in Madura. Furthermore, an ethnographic method was also used to analyze documents, ethnographic notes, and documentation (photos). Data analysis techniques employed an interactive model of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of the study show that the cultural values and geometric concepts of the tanean lanjang traditional house comprised (1) kinship and brotherhood values, (2) harmony in the household, and (3) strength in the household. The geometric concepts contained in the traditional tanean lanjang house include 2-dimensional shape (i.e., rectangle, trapezoid, triangle), perimeter of 2-dimensional shape, area of 2-dimensional shape, 3- dimensional shape (i.e., triangular prism), the volume of 3-dimensional shape, curve, and the concept of reflection in geometry.

Abstract

Abstraction is essential to learning mathematics because the mathematical concepts obtained through abstraction will be more meaningful than directly receiving these concepts. This study aims to describe the pre-service teachers' abstraction in constructing relationships among quadrilaterals. This research method was explorative qualitative research with a purposive sampling technique. The subject of this research was a pre-service mathematics teacher who had taken a geometry course. The data analysis techniques used in this study were data condensation, data display, drawing and verifying conclusions. The research results showed that the participant used epistemic actions in an abstraction, such as recognising each quadrilateral type, building-with their properties, constructing relationships among them, and consolidating the abstract results made. Thus, the abstraction in constructing relationships among quadrilaterals can be observed from the epistemic actions: recognising, building-with, constructing, and consolidation, known as RBC+C.
