Abstract

This research aims to identify the optimal pressing temperatures and time of a fibre board made from kepok banana stem. The target of density for this fibre board is 0.6 gr/cm3). The board was made by dividing the fibre into three different parts with the same weight (weight ration 1:1:1). After that, each fibre was applied adhesive mixtures by a means of spraying the mixture evenly with a hand sprayer. Having evenly mixed, the fibre was put into a 30 cm × 30 cm × 1 cm mold by an intersecting perpendicular. The physical and mechanical properties were examined based on JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) A 5906-2003. In this research, the variables of observation involved physical properties (density, water content, thickness swelling, and water absorption) and mechanical properties (MOE, MOR, bonding strength, grasp screw strength). The results revealed that the averagevalue of physical properties were stated as follows: the board density was between 0.5618-0.6268 gr/cm3, the water content was between 9.1438%-10.2041 %, the water absorption was between 148.5961% - 120.5571%, the thickness swelling was between 15.5167%-23.9611%. Meanwhile, the average value of mechanical properties were recorded as follows: MOE was between 10553.3831 kg/cm2-15199.4095 kg/cm2, MOR was between 208.2067 kg/cm2-270.0940 kg/cm2, bonding strength was between 0.5012 kg/cm2-1.0790 kg/cm2, grasp screw strength was between 30.9408 kg - 43.3176 kg. The fibre board with temperature 1800C and 10 minutes of prssing time constituted as the optimal treatment to produce a fibre board which met the standard of JIS A 5905-2003 type 5,15,25, and 30.Keywords: fibre board, kepok banana fibre, pressing temperature, pressing time.

Abstract

This study aims were to examine the effect of material composition, particle size and the interaction of both factors on the physical and mechanical properties of particle-cement board from veneer waste, and to determine  the optimal material composition and particle size of particle-cement board accordance to JIS A 5417:1992. The research were conducted at Wood Workhsop Laboratory, Wood Technology Laboratory, Wood Processing Laboratory of Tanjungpura University and Laboratory of PT. Duta Pertiwi Nusantara Pontianak. The materials used were veneer waste, portland cement-type 1 (Holcim), 70% of tap water from weight of cement  and 5% of MgCl2 from weight of cement. The data were analyzed using a factorial experiment in random design complete (RDC) which consists of two factors. Factor A was material composition (cement:particle) consists of 75:25, 80:20, 85:15. Factor B was particle size consist of 20 mesh and 40 mesh. The board were made with size of 30 cm x 30 cm x 1 cm and with target density of 1 gr/cm3. The pressing was done by manual cold press for 10 minutes, followed by clamping the board for 24 hours with iron clamp. The result showed that the material composition and the interaction of both factors had significant effects on density, moisture content, thickness swelling, MOE and MOR. The particle size factor had  significant effects on density, moisture content, thickness swelling, water arbsoption, MOE and MOR. The board produced which fullfil the JIS A 5417:1992 was made with the treatment with composition cement:particle (85:15) and particle size is 40 mesh.Keyword: material composition, particle size, particle-cement board, physical and mechanical properties, veneer waste.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the physical and mechanical properties of particle board from veneer waste based on the press time and concentration of urea formaldehyde, as well as to determine the best pressing time and adhesive concentration, so as to produce physical and mechanical properties that meet JIS A 5908: 2003 standards. The method used in this research were a factorial experiment in random design complete (RAL) with two factors are factor A (pressing time) consists of 7 minutes and 9 minutes, and factor B (urea formaldehyde concentration) consists of concentrations of 12%, 14% and 16%. The particle board size is 30 cm x 30 cm x 1 cm with a target density of 0,8g/cm3 and pressed at 165°C with a pressure of 30 kg/cm2. The results showed that density values 0,7640 gr/cm³, water content 8,4509%, water absorption 40,4108%, thickness development 9,9308%, MOE 19.290,5877 kg/cm², MOR 370,5011 kg/cm², IB 2,9925 kg/cm², the screw holding strength 146,7145 kg. In general, all test values meet the JIS A 5908: 2003 standards except thickness swelling and MOE. The best particle board is a particle board made of with a pressing time of 9 minutes with a concentration of urea formaldehyde of 16%.Keywords: pressing time, urea formaldehyde concentration, particle board, veneer waste

Abstract

This study aims at determining the effect of temperature and pressing time on the physical and mechanical properties of Oriented Strand Board (OSB) from the mixture of haur hijau bamboo and rubber wood and to get information related to temperature treatment and pressing time resulting the best physical and mechanical properties of OSB. The board size was 30 cm x 30 cm x 1 cm with target density of 0.75 g / cm3. The type of adhesive used is phenol formaldehyde. The face and back layers use a rubber wood strand while the core layer use a strand of haur hijau bamboo with a ratio of 1: 1: 1. The method used is a factorial experiment in random design complete (RAL) which consists of two factors. Factor A is the pressing temperature comprising 1600C and 1700C, while the B factor is the duration of the pressing time consisting of 7 minutes, 10 minutes and 12 minutes. The pressures used in the study is ± 25 kg / cm2 and the adhesive concentration is 10%. The testing of physical and mechanical properties accordance with JIS A 5908-2003 standard. The results of the research showed that all temperature and all pressing time treatment produced the OSB that meets the JIS Standard 5908-2003 (Base Particleboard Type 24-10). The best quality OSB is noted at the 1700C of pressing temperatures and 10 minutes of pressing time.Keywords : haur hijau bamboo, oriented strand board (OSB), physical and mechanical properties, rubber wood, temperature and pressing time
