Abstract

This study aims to develop a valid, practical, and effective instrument for assessing higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) in junior high school mathematics. Employing a research and development (R&D) approach, the study adapts Mardapi's (2008) development model, which includes nine stages. However, this research focuses on the first seven stages, leaving the final implementation to teachers in schools. The instrument was tested on 40 students at SMPN 2 Rajagaluh, Majalengka Regency. The validity analysis demonstrated that all V values exceeded 0.3, indicating strong content validity. Reliability testing yielded a Cronbach's Alpha score of 0.52, suggesting moderate internal consistency. The findings revealed that students' HOTS performance remains suboptimal, highlighting the need for targeted instructional strategies. Strengthening HOTS can be achieved through structured practice with complex problem-solving tasks. This study provides a robust framework for educators to assess and enhance students’ critical thinking abilities in mathematics.

Abstract

This study employs a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to explore students' epistemological obstacles in solving permutation and combination problems, with the goal of supporting the development of more effective teaching materials. The research involved 24 12th-grade high school students (14 males and 10 females) and used qualitative methods. Data were collected through five diagnostic essay questions and semi-structured interviews to identify epistemological obstacles in combinatorics. Students’ written responses and interview transcripts were analyzed and interpreted to uncover the underlying obstacles. The findings revealed several epistemological obstacles: (1) students were unable to identify all possible answers from a given problem; (2) students could not differentiate between problems requiring the concept of permutation and those requiring the concept of combination; (3) students struggled to solve problems that differed from the example problems provided; and (4) challenges in formulating a complete solution when faced with multiple conditions, despite being able to calculate partial results. These insights suggest that teachers and future researchers should consider students' epistemological obstacles when designing instructional materials, particularly for topics in combinatorics such as permutations and combinations. Developing learning resources based on these findings may enhance conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills among students.

Abstract

Mathematics plays a crucial role in fostering students’ logical, critical, and analytical thinking skills. However, many students still face challenges in understanding and applying mathematical concepts. This study aims to map students' critical thinking skills through an analysis of student errors in solving problems involving systems of linear equations in three variables using Newman Error Analysis (NEA).  The research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive approach, supported by written tests and interviews. The research sample was 33 eleventh-grade high school students in Majalengka Regency, West Java.  The findings revealed that while no errors occurred at the reading stage, 48% of students made comprehension errors, 57% made transformation errors, 66% experienced process skill errors, and 82% committed encoding errors. The most dominant errors were encoding errors, reflecting weaknesses in the aspects of evaluating evidence and drawing conclusions. Most encoding errors were influenced by students' lack of confidence and learning motivation. These results suggest that difficulties in earlier stages of problem-solving significantly affect students’ ability to arrive at correct final answers. The study emphasizes the importance of strengthening students’ procedural fluency and supporting their cognitive processes to improve mathematical problem-solving performance.    Keywords: contextual, critical thinking skills, Newman’s error analysis, three-variable linear equation.

Abstract

Persistent difficulties in learning abstract algebraic concepts—particularly among preservice mathematics teachers—continue to hinder students’ mathematical development. While prior studies have documented general misconceptions, few have grounded their analysis in comprehensive learning theories. Addressing this gap, the present study adopts the APOS (Action, Process, Object, Schema) theoretical framework to examine the cognitive obstacles encountered in understanding logarithmic, matrix, and quadratic function concepts. This qualitative study employed a descriptive case study design involving six preservice mathematics teachers with varying levels of mathematical ability (high, moderate, and low). Data were collected through written responses, semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and cognitive mapping. The findings revealed that most participants were at the action stage, relying on procedural steps without deep conceptual understanding. Key cognitive obstacles included errors in applying logarithmic properties, difficulties integrating logarithms with matrices, and an inability to perceive systems of equations as unified entities. Group discussions proved effective in helping participants transition through the learning stages. Collaborative interactions enabled participants to identify errors, correct misconceptions, and strengthen conceptual understanding through reflection and validation. Furthermore, the use of visual tools, graphical representations, and real-world contexts supported deeper conceptual integration. This study underscores the importance of implementing APOS-based instructional strategies, including group discussions, exploratory exercises, and problem-based learning, to facilitate transitions between stages. The implications of these findings highlight the need for developing APOS-based diagnostic tools and innovative instructional designs to address cognitive obstacles effectively.
