Abstract

Solid state chemistry (SSC) concept is abstract yet makes it difficult for students. Considering students’ and scientist conception in designing a learning sequence, it is important to make scientific knowledge to be comprehensible for students. Model of Educational Reconstruction (MER) was adopted to define learning in order to develop students’ Conceptual Knowledge (CK) of the SSC concept. A sequence of learning activities was designed based on the MER.  The purpose of this study was to examine the use of MER in developing students’ CK. One group pre- and post-test experimental design employed in this study. CK on SSC structured essay test consisting of 26 items were developed to measure students’ CK before and after their involvement in learning. Paired sample t-tests were employed and the results showed significant differences in the overall domain-knowledge (p < .001).  In detail, students’ CK categorized into complete (C), incomplete (IC), misconception (M), incorrect (I), and no answer (NA). After the intervention, the number of students that answered correctly increased (57,4% complete and 21% incomplete). This study showed that MER was an effective learning design to develop students’ conceptual knowledge of chemistry concepts.

Abstract

Three tier test is one of the instruments which can be used to detect conception level of the students. This developed-three tier test instrument consists of three levels of question. The first tier is multiple choice, the second tier is reason to choose the answer, and the third tier is affirmative question about the belief of the answers chosen on the first and second tier. An instrument can be used as it well-qualified; that can be seen from its validity and reliability value.  One of the methods that used to measure the instrument’s validity is Content Validity Ratio (CVR) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) while a method that used to measure the instrument’s reliability is cronbach test.  The quality of tree tier instrument test, based on CVR result in an average 0.64, indicates that the instrument had owned conformity content with the measured-domain, and CFA in a MSA-average 0.805, indicates that the instrument had been valid and can develop the construct that measured in accordance with the developed-indicators as well as the three tier instrument’s reliability in Cronbach’s Alpha value 0.927 insists that the three tier instrument that developed has a quite good reliability value. Among 27 instruments that had been analyzed, 12 instruments of them considered valid based on CVR and CFA examination result. Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The problem in this research is that students are more familiar with the application of metallic bonding than its concept. This is because the characteristics of the concept are abstract concepts with real context. It makes students more interested in studying the phenomenon but lack to explain the concept and some students show misconception. Therefore this research aims to design learning sequences of metallic bonding topics using the framework model of educational reconstruction (MER). This sequence considers the students’ and scientists’ conception. Considering the initial conception of students in designing learning sequences provides benefits for students. Through MER, learning sequences begin by analyzing student conceptions through semi-structured interviews and concept maps designed by students. Scientific conception analysis is done through concept analysis of several text books that are often used in learning. There are three criteria of students’ conception they are prefer to scientist conception, misconception, and incompetence. Based on the three criteria, learning sequences are produced with the aim to bringing students' conceptions toward scientific conceptions.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the world's mega biodiversity needs to be preserved, due to estimated the extinction rate of one species is estimated at 10,000 times per year caused by human activity. Various efforts have been made by various sectors to preserve the environment, including in education through Environmental Education (EE). This research aim to implement Environmental Literacy (EL) domain in Biodiversity learning assisted validated e-booklet (CVR0,67) to enhance student knowledge, cognitive skills (identification of issues, analysis of issues, and action plans), attitude (verbal commitment, environmental sensitivity, and feelings towards the environment), and responsible behavior towards the environment. The EL domains related to real context of biodiversity in Gegas Dam is implemented in order to avoid the availability of disconnecting youth generation with their native biodiversity. Data analysis and identification of diversity- diversity index, homogeneity, dominance and correlation among chemical-physical environmental factors- are presented in an e-booklet to strengthen students' knowledge and cognitive skills, while attitude and responsibility behavior are strengthened by presenting local, national and global environmental issues. Through one group pre-posttest design, 30 high school students in South Sumatra as youth generation were involved in this research. Students’ EL is measured by 66 questions EL domain. The results showed that students' verbal commitment got the highest n-gain score (0.62 medium), while environmental sensitivity was the smallest (0.2 low). These results indicate that verbally students or youth generation already know how to conserve the environment. Cultivation of environmental conservation habits could be continuously improved by realizing their verbal ideas.
