Abstract

Indonesia is the second largest contributor of plastic waste in the world with an unmanageable capacity of 3.2 million tonnes each year and 1.29 million tonnes of plastic waste ending up in the ocean. Plastic waste accounted for 16% of the world's marine plastic pollution, which directly contributed greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Pyrolysis was an effective solution to overcome the processing of plastic waste which produces energy conversion. Pyrolysis is the process of breaking down long chain polymer molecules into smaller molecules through thermal cracking in the absence of oxygen at temperatures above 400°C. Pyrolysis does not release pollutants in the form of particles and CO2 into the atmosphere so it practically does not disturb the environment. This research method was a pyrolysis experiment on Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste from mineral water packaging and metal-coated PET (metallized PET foil) from milk and snack packaging. The pyrolysis product was liquid oil with two different types of colors whose compounds were identified using gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The number of compound components from PET plastic waste pyrolysis products was 58 components with the largest compound component areas being 5-methyl-1-heptene and 1-tridecanol. Meanwhile, the number of compound components from the pyrolysis product of metal-coated PET plastic waste (metallized PET foil) was 56 compound components with the largest compound component areas being 3-methyl-5-undecene and 1-tridecanol.

Abstract

The acid base indicators commonly used by scientists are mostly synthetic indicators that are harmful for the environment. Moreover, chemists need various chemicals to detect broad pH ranges for acid and base samples solution.  The aim of this research was to create a natural universal pH indicator from telang flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) extract coupled with the digital image detection. The universal pH indicator is very important in education chemistry that broadly used for titration and other class room chemical experiments. This process of making a natural universal pH indicator integrated with digital images meets green chemistry criteria that use environmentally friendly materials and technology. The results show that color absorption data at pH 1-2 are purple, pH 3-5 are violet, pH 6-10 are blue, pH 11-12 are green and pH 13-14 are yellow. RGB intensity digital image data shows the intensity of the red color increases in the pH range 6-11, while the intensity of the green and blue colors tends to be stable. The proposed method was validated using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer and conventional pH meter that give the comparable results.

Abstract. Anaerobic Respiration is one of biology topics that must be studied by XII IPA high school Students. The topic is Biotechnology which useful in everyday life due to its application related to anaerobic respiration. However, this topic has a fairly high level of difficulty and sometimes make students get misconceptions about the stages between microbes and the products produced in anaerobic respiration. Thus a Model of Education Reconstruction (MER) is needed to improve students' conceptions into scientific concepts by applying video-based learning designs and practicums. It can be used to explain the stages and utilization of microbes in applying the concept of anaerobic respiration. Meanwhile, through practicum, the students can see directly the products produced in anaerobic respiration. The subjects of this study were 20 students of XII IPA high School in Bengkulu City which consist of 10 boys and 10 girls. The research instrument was a three-tier test which was given to the sample in the pre-assessment and post-assessment activities. The results of the pre-assessment showed that students' conceptions on the topic of anaerobic respiration were low, with the data of 33% misconceptions, 42% did not know the concept, and 25% knew the concept. After implementing the video and practicum-based Model of Education Reconstruction (MER), students' conceptions have increased.
