Abstract

The detection of borax in food is of critical importance due to its toxic properties, which pose serious health risks, especially when consumed continuously, even in small amounts. Therefore, an environmentally friendly, accessible, and easy-to-use detection method is needed for broader application, particularly in routine food monitoring. This study introduces a novel quantitative detection approach using butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) extract as a natural indicator, combining visual colorimetry and UV-Vis spectrophotometry for dual-mode borax analysis. Unlike previous studies that focused solely on qualitative color observation, this research establishes a quantitative correlation between absorbance and borax concentration, supported by strong linearity (R² = 0.9942) and high sensitivity (LoD = 0.026 ppm; LoQ = 0.088 ppm). The butterfly pea extract, rich in anthocyanins, produced a distinct blue color that shifted to green upon interaction with borax, forming a specific butterfly pea–borax complex with a maximum wavelength (λmax) at 624 nm. Application to real meatball samples revealed borax contents of 0.528% and 0.4641% in two samples, respectively. The integration of butterfly pea extract with turmeric paper as a dual-confirmation system enhances analytical reliability while maintaining cost-effectiveness and environmental safety. This work contributes a validated, eco-friendly, and quantitative natural detection method that bridges the gap between laboratory precision and community-based food safety monitoring.

Abstract

The forest softshell turtle (Dogania subplana) is a species increasingly threatened by habitat destruction and overexploitation. This study aims to identify the acclimatization process of D. subplana in an artificial environment, specifically, an aquarium at the Turtle Learning Center (TLC). The research was conducted over 30 days from July to August 2024. Observations were made on daily behavior, body temperature, and health condition, individual biometric measurements, and environmental (abiotic) parameters. The results showed that daily behaviors such as feeding, basking, and hiding occurred regularly, indicating the species' ability to adapt to a new environment. The turtles experienced an increase in body weight, while growth in carapace length and width was very slow. The body temperature of D. subplana varied in accordance with the surrounding environmental temperature, reflecting its dependence on ambient conditions. Some individuals experienced minor health issues, such as fungal infections, but the majority remained active and healthy. Environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, and light intensity were within ranges conducive to acclimatization. These findings suggest that the aquarium at the TLC is quite effective as an ex situ conservation facility in supporting the adaptation process of D. subplana  outside its natural habitat.

Abstract

Biogas is a renewable, environmentally friendly energy source with significant potential for science education, offering an alternative to the global fossil fuel crisis. This study aims to provide a brief overview of research trends, publication contributions, methodologies used, thematic coverage, and teaching integration in the biogas-based science education literature. This study is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) with bibliometric analysis, supported by Publish or Perish and VOSviewer, including 720 selected articles from the period 2015 to 2024. The results show that, since 2020, publications related to biogas have increased significantly, with three main research focuses: the use of organic waste for renewable energy development; the application of biogas as an alternative global energy source through technological innovation; and its integration into HOTS learning and education. The majority of the publications come from reputable international journals such as Energies and Sustainability. Case studies and reviews remain the dominant research protocols, while empirical designs such as experiments and surveys are still relatively rare, leaving room for more applied follow-up studies. This review also finds that the application of biogas in science education can support the development of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). However, this application remains limited in the existing literature. Therefore, the findings highlight the need for further empirical research to more deeply explore the potential of biogas for science education and HOTS development. This study provides new insights that the biogas literature has not fully integrated practical applications for HOTS development, thus requiring further creative and applied research to address this gap. Keywords: alternative energy, biogas, environmentally friendly, HOTS, science education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze carbon emissions from motor vehicles and the potential for carbon absorption by vegetation on four main roads in Bengkulu City: Padang Jati, Hibrida, Pagar Dewa, and Sukarami. The approach used is quantitative-descriptive, with data collected through traffic surveys and direct measurements of vegetation parameters during the observation period. Emissions are calculated using emission factors based on IPCC/KLHK standards according to vehicle type, while tree biomass is analyzed using allometric equations based on trunk diameter, track length, and vegetation type. Carbon analysis on four roads in Bengkulu City shows a significant imbalance between vehicle emissions and vegetation absorption. Sukarami recorded the highest emissions (751,813 kg CO₂) with a biomass of only 24,053 kg (absorption of 40,607 kg), making it a carbon source. Conversely, Padang Jati had the largest biomass (881,578 kg) compared to emissions of 431,889 kg CO₂, making it a carbon sink with absorption of 344%. Hibrida and Pagar Dewa showed intermediate conditions, with emissions of 424,145–570,063 kg CO₂ and absorption of 544,349–947 kg, indicating an unbalanced absorption capacity. These results emphasize the need to increase vegetation cover and manage green spaces as strategies for mitigating urban climate change.

Abstract

Training digital-based authentic assessments is essential due to decontextualization challenges and technological advancements in learning assessment. Transformative schools require teachers to design innovative assessments supporting differentiated learning in the independent curriculum implementation, yet many face difficulties in creating assessments aligned with new learning paradigms. This study implemented the ICARE framework (Introduction, Connection, Application, Reflection, and Extend) to enhance teachers' competencies in designing digital-based authentic assessments at SMPN 02 Tebat Karai and SMPN 02 Kepahiang. Thirty teachers from various subjects with 1-20+ years of teaching experience participated in this professional development program. Data were collected through Socrative application reflection and semi-structured interviews, analyzed descriptively across three experience groups. Results showed that most teachers successfully implemented the independent curriculum and demonstrated proficiency in diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments. Observation and project assessments were most widely used during learning processes. Teachers exhibited competence with digital tools including Google Forms, Quizizz, and Socrative. Assessment preferences varied across experience groups, with performance and portfolio assessments predominating. The ICARE framework effectively developed teachers' competencies in designing digital-based authentic assessments aligned with learning objectives and differentiated learning principles. This study contributes practical frameworks for teacher professional development in authentic assessment within Indonesian transformative school contexts, providing evidence-based guidelines for enhancing assessment literacy. Future research should investigate long-term impacts on student learning outcomes and explore scalability across diverse educational settings.
