Abstract

This research aims to reveal the relations between democracy and customary power in handling the East Timorese ex-refugees in Belu Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia, related to democratic practices More specifically, democracy is limited to the context of potential exclusion access of the Village Fund for new residents. This research used a qualitative and case studies approach to reveal democratic practices related to the implementation of Village Funds that are intertwined with the local culture. The subjects in this research were new residents in Fatuba’a Village which is geographically close to the cross-border between Indonesia and East Timor. Nearly half of Fatuba’a’s populations are new residents who are East Timorese ex-refugees. A large number of new residents have become a complex social problem for Fatuba’a Village. The data collection techniques consist of observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. The results showed that customary institutions play a significant role in distributing power both in aspects of government and village development, including the distribution of village funds-use. The Liudasik tribe is a successful dominant tribe obtaining legitimacy of the new residents by granting customary land as a place to live and farming for their contribution to elect the village head from the Liudasik tribe. In the context of the Village Fund, its use also shows the interdependence between new residents and the Liudasik tribe. Consequently, the new residents have an access to village funds. There is no exclusion of new residents for the Fatuba’a’s Village Fund-use. The dependence of new residents on customary institutions has perpetuated the customary power of the Liudasik tribe.

Abstract

Promoting students’ well-being is a vital aspect of education. Creating a conducive classroom learning environment is essential, and task orientation plays a significant role. This paper aims to explore three research objectives related to the influence of the learning environment on student well-being by focusing on creating a task-oriented learning environment. The study employs a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional study design. The study analyzed 1,698 students (676 male and 994 female students) from nine cities in East Java, Indonesia. The results of the simultaneous regression analysis showed that R=.578, R2=.334, and p<.10. The learning environment was found to predict student well-being by 33.4% significantly. At the same time, task orientation was identified as the most dominant factor affecting student well-being. The study’s findings suggest that task orientation could be a solution to enhance student well-being in classroom learning practices. This study suggests the need for teacher development to improve teachers’ professional ability to facilitate learning in the classroom. Future research should consider using central variables, including moderating and intervening variables, to explore the relationship between the learning environment and student well-being.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the al-qawaid wa al-tarjamah method at Islamic Boarding School Hidayatul Mubtadi’in and evaluate its effectiveness in improving students' ability to read kitab Turots (classical Islamic texts). Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, questionnaires, and supporting documents. The findings reveal that the al-qawaid wa al-tarjamah method significantly enhances students' reading abilities, as shown by improved post-test scores compared to pre-test scores across all three classes: Class 1 (82:68), Class 2 (84:71), and Class 3 (92:78). Moreover, the post-test scores exceeded the predetermined targets for each class, indicating the method's effectiveness. Observations also highlight high levels of student engagement and motivation, with learners actively participating in activities such as memorization, completing assignments, and murojaah (lesson reviews). These findings underscore the method's role in fostering academic achievement and enthusiasm for learning. The study’s implications suggest that this method could serve as a model for other Islamic boarding schools aiming to improve students’ mastery of classical texts. To enhance its application, integrating modern pedagogical tools such as digital platforms may further optimize learning outcomes. Future research should explore the method's long-term impact, its adaptability in non-boarding school settings, and comparisons with alternative teaching methods to maximize its potential benefits.

Abstract

In general, regional integration takes the form of political economy initiatives focused on commercial interests to achieve broader socio-political and security goals. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional organization in Southeast Asia. After the end of the Cold War, ASEAN underwent changes, especially in terms of norms, governance, and collective identity. This article aims to explain the institutional reform and transformation of ASEAN's identity as a regional organization after the end of Cold War era. Using Alexander Wendt's concept of Collective Identity, this article argues that the 1997-1998 crisis and political dynamics in Southeast Asia unraveled the weaknesses of ASEAN's traditional principles as a regional organization. This led to skepticism towards the credibility and function of ASEAN. In order to restore its image and credibility, ASEAN conducted institutional reform in some stages. The institutional reform started with conceptualizing shared ideas through the establishment of the ASEAN Community, which was then institutionalized in a set of norms through the ASEAN Charter. These institutional reforms gave birth to a common set of ideas and norms for the member states. These shared ideas and norms indicate the transformation of ASEAN's collective identity as a regional organization that is more in line with universal norms such as human rights, democracy, and good governance.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the learning outcomes of Islamic Education before and after applying the Jigsaw cooperative learning method and to evaluate its impact on improving students' academic achievement in Islamic Education subjects. The research specifically investigates the influence of the Jigsaw learning approach on student achievement in an experimental study conducted in Grade XI at SMAN 3 Pandeglang. The study employed a quasi-experimental design involving two groups: an experimental group and a control group. A quantitative research approach was used, utilizing a survey method. The sampling technique employed was simple random sampling, selecting 69 students as the sample based on the nonequivalent formula. Data were collected through test distribution. After implementing the Jigsaw approach, the findings indicate a significant improvement in students' academic achievement in Islamic Education and character-building subjects. The pretest mean score of the experimental group was 64.43, which increased to 69.35 in the posttest. Similarly, students' performance in the control group improved from a pretest score of 65.93 to a posttest score of 71.80. Hypothesis testing using the t-test revealed a t-value (t = 10.82) greater than the critical value (t = 2.03) at a 5% significance level, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (Ho) and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). Thus, the Jigsaw cooperative learning approach impacts students' academic achievement. In contrast, conventional methods show no significant effect on the learning outcomes of Islamic Education and Character Building in Grade XI at SMAN 3 Pandeglang.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of drum music as an effective strategy for managing emotional outbursts in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), particularly during tantrums. The research is motivated by parents, teachers, and therapists' challenges in handling tantrum behaviours, which often disrupt the affected child, their peers, and surrounding activities. Drum instruments were introduced as an engaging and enjoyable medium to redirect and regulate such behaviours in children with ASD. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research method to explore drum music's theoretical and practical impacts on emotional regulation. According to the research, children with ASD benefit significantly from playing drum instruments when it comes to emotional regulation. This entertaining and captivating practice promotes emotional self-regulation while acting as a diversion. The study demonstrates how youngsters may naturally and successfully regulate their emotional responses when engaged in drum-playing activities, highlighting the potential of drum music as a therapeutic aid.
