Abstract

This study investigates the influence of local language (Madurese) interference on foreign language (Arabic) acquisition among rural Indonesian santri communities. Recognizing that traditional views often frame interference as a linguistic deficit, this research addresses a gap in the existing literature by exploring the deeper sociolinguistic dynamics and informal language use within rural pesantren settings. Specifically, it aims to analyze (1) forms of local language interference in Arabic, (2) factors causing such interference, and (3) its impact on santri speaking skills. Employing a qualitative-ethnographic design, the study collected data through naturalistic observation and unstructured interviews with 79 Madurese-speaking santri in Gondanglegi sub-district, East Java, analyzing them within a sociolinguistic framework grounded in interference theory and diglossia. Findings reveal significant phonological, morphological, syntactic, and lexical interference patterns demonstrably linked to the unique sociocultural context of pesantren multilingualism. Critically, these interferences are not merely errors but actively foster community, playfulness, and shared identity, thereby transforming Arabic into a more dynamic and engaging learning experience. This research offers a novel sociolinguistic analysis, arguing that interference in this context functions as an active strategy for religious pedagogy and cultural preservation. It expands translanguaging theory by highlighting the sacred-secular duality in language mixing—a phenomenon rarely documented in traditional Islamic education globally.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the al-qawā’id wa al-tarjamah method at Islamic Boarding School Hidayatul Mubtadi'in and evaluate its effectiveness in improving students' ability to read kitab al-turāts (classical Islamic texts). Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, questionnaires, and supporting documents. The findings reveal that the al-qawā’id wa al-tarjamah method significantly enhances students' reading abilities, as shown by improved post-test scores compared to pre-test scores across all three classes: Class 1 (82:68), Class 2 (84:71), and Class 3 (92:78). Moreover, the post-test scores exceeded the predetermined targets for each class, indicating the method's effectiveness. Observations also highlight high levels of student engagement and motivation, with learners actively participating in activities such as memorization, completing assignments, and murāja'ah (lesson reviews). These findings underscore the method's role in fostering academic achievement and enthusiasm for learning. The study's implications suggest that this method could serve as a model for other Islamic boarding schools aiming to improve students' mastery of classical texts. To enhance its application, integrating modern pedagogical tools such as digital platforms may further optimize learning outcomes. Future research should explore the method's long-term impact, its adaptability in non-boarding school settings, and comparisons with alternative teaching methods to maximize its potential benefits.

Abstract

This research discusses the power of local political elites and the application of network governance in the implementation of poverty alleviation policies in Gresik Regency. The main focus of the research is how the dominance of local political elites affects the decision-making process, resource distribution, and policy effectiveness, and how network governance plays a role in overcoming these challenges. The research method used is a qualitative approach with data collection through in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis. The results show that the dominance of local political elites often prioritises political interests over substantive policy objectives, resulting in unequal distribution of resources and limitations in achieving policy targets. In addition, network governance in Gresik District faces challenges in the form of weak coordination between stakeholders, the limited role of the private sector and civil society organisations, and the lack of active participation of local communities. This research emphasises the need for network governance reform to create more inclusive, transparent, and sustainable poverty alleviation policies. A collaborative approach that involves equal roles between the government, private sector, NGOs, and communities is an important step to improve policy effectiveness. In addition, limiting the dominance of local political elites is necessary to ensure that policies are based on the needs of the community, not political interests alone.gb777

Abstract

Based on empirical findings, this article concludes that the influx of Chinese migrant workers is a serious threat against Indonesian local and migrant workers in the overseas, amidst the high number of unemployment. The local and migrant workers have struggled to seek for a better job under uncertain situation in Indonesia. The Indonesian government attempts to create more job vacancies, yet the government has welcomed more migrant workers especially from China. Furthermore, Indonesian migrant workers are also recognized as the highest contributor for Indonesian remittance for many years. The influx of Chinese migrant workers blatantly hit both Indonesian local and migrant workers. In addition, this was a humiliation against Indonesian workers, which have struggled to migrate overseas through illegal and very risky ways. Conversely, a large number of Chinese migrant workers have been deployed in various projects, which basically can be handled by local workers. The arrival of Chinese migrant workers, of course, became a controversial issue especially among Indonesian local and migrant workers, who have faced difficult situation such as exploitation, humiliation, and contract abuses. This is a qualitative research enriched with semi-structured interviews with some key respondents specifically those who have experiences and expertise on migrant workers issues.
