Abstract

In Indonesia, the engineering component in STEM education is critical yet remains poorly understood. This study aims to assess the representation of engineering education using the Quality of Engineering Education (QEE) framework within the Science Curriculum Phase D. The method employed is content analysis using a descriptive quantitative and qualitative approach within the QEE framework developed by Moore (2014). The study reveals that 10 out of 12 QEE elements are identifiable within the curriculum, with the Engineering Tools (Etool) element being the most dominant. However, two elements remain absent: the Process of Design (POD) and Concepts of Engineering and Engineers (CEE). These findings indicate that the quality of Engineering Education at Phase D in Indonesia remains limited. The results suggest that the Indonesian Science Curriculum for Junior High Schools still needs further development so that STEM components are explicitly represented and can serve as a firm reference for teachers to begin implementing STEM-based learning.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a STEM–Engineering Design Process (STEM–EDP) student worksheet integrated with animated learning videos contextualized through socio-scientific issues (SSI) related to the Mahakam River ecosystem. The development was motivated by the lack of learning materials in junior high school science that meaningfully connect scientific concepts with local environmental problems while promoting higher order thinking and authentic STEM practices. This study employed a Research and Development design using the ADDIE model, limited to Analysis, Design, and Development stages. Four experts in content, media, and instructional design, together with a professional science teacher, participated in validating the product, while 86 Grade VII junior high school students from two schools in East Kalimantan were involved in assessing its practicality. Data was collected through expert validation sheets and student response questionnaires using a four-point Likert scale, and scores were analyzed by converting them into percentages to determine validity and practicality categories. The expert validation results showed an average score of 93%, indicating a very good level of feasibility, with animated videos receiving the highest score of 96%. Student responses also demonstrated strong acceptance, with an average score of 83.96% categorized as very good, reflecting high levels of clarity, engagement, and relevance. These findings indicate that integrating SSI, STEM–EDP frameworks, and animated media strengthens students’ conceptual understanding and supports meaningful learning experiences. Overall, the developed learning materials are theoretically valid and practically feasible, offering a pedagogical innovation that bridges scientific content, environmental context, and engineering-based problem solving for junior high school science education.

Abstract

The development of biodegradable plastics offers a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics, made using easily degradable materials such as cellulose-containing materials found in seaweed and banana stem fibers. Six tests were conducted, namely tensile testing, absorption testing, biodegradation testing, folding testing, thickness testing, and density testing. The tensile strength test showed the highest value in the seaweed sample at 0.138 MPa. The absorption test indicated that both the seaweed and banana stem fiber samples had lower absorption capacity. The biodegradation test showed that both samples degraded within four days. In the folding test, both types of bioplastics showed excellent flexibility without cracking or tearing. The thickness of the bioplastic increased, with the seaweed-based bioplastic measuring 0.0636 mm and the banana stem fiber-based bioplastic measuring 0.1744 mm. The density of the bioplastic also increased significantly from 120 kg/m³ to 1,200 kg/m³. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the addition of banana stem fiber improves the physical and mechanical properties of bioplastic, making it a potential alternative to environmentally friendly plastic.

Employing the Educational Design Research (EDR) method, this research focuses on the design and construction phase involving the development of student worksheets and teaching modules. The product feasibility was assessed by five experts through content and graphic validation using a 46-item instrument with a 4-point Likert scale. Data were analyzed using percentage analysis and Aiken’s V index. The results demonstrate that the content feasibility achieved an average score of 93% (Very Valid) with an Aiken’s V of 0.90, highlighting strong validity in integrating the EDP and SDGs. The graphic feasibility obtained an average score of 87% (Very Valid). However, the specific finding revealed a critical gap in the "Cover Design" indicator, which scored the lowest (75%). Overall, the STEM-EDP materials are declared academically feasible by experts, although they require graphic improvements. However, the effectiveness of these tools has not been practically tested in the field. Therefore, further development must integrate academic validity with classroom trials to ensure its positive impact on student motivation.

Abstract

Environmental sustainability has become crucial, especially in tropical environments that act as lungs for the world. Therefore, exploring the pro-environmental behavior (PEB) of young citizens of Eastern Borneo in Indonesia is beneficial. Exploration focused on the PEB category of students, the PEB aspect (preservation, utilization, appreciation), and student responses to the local environmental issues. This study surveyed 651 9th-grade students (15-year-olds) in six cities around Eastern Borneo. The measurement of PEB was carried out using the adapted two major environmental values model with an added scale for appreciation. Additional open-ended questions were applied to clarify the students’ perspectives on the significant environmental issues in Eastern Borneo. The result showed that only half of the students (51.31%) had advanced PEB, with the rest classified as transitional (48.23%) and naive (0.46%). Among the three PEB aspects, utilization scored the highest, indicating that the students were strongly inclined to endorse the importance of environmental utilization for human welfare. Moreover, the majority favored relocating the capital city, which highlights the importance of a new capital city owing to the overcrowded state of the current capital city (Jakarta) and the decentralization of the development of Indonesia. Nevertheless, it was found that they are concerned about preservation and sustainability regarding coal mining and palm plantations. Therefore, it was considered that environmental education for students needs enhancement to shape their PEB with contextual environmental issues.
