Abstract

Cultural translation is a complex process that involves transferring messages between two linguistic codes while considering the sociocultural contexts of both the source and target languages. It requires a holistic approach to navigate various challenges and ensure meaning equivalence. One key perspective in translation studies is the examination of translation through the lens of specific cultural concepts. This study explores the dynamic relationship between translators, the translation of culturally specific expressions, and the quality of the translated work. Understanding cultural nuances is essential, as language is deeply intertwined with the values, traditions, and worldviews of a community. Translators must not only have linguistic proficiency but also possess cultural awareness to convey meaning accurately. Inadequate cultural adaptation may lead to misinterpretation, loss of meaning, or even offense in the target language. Thus, cultural translation requires strategies that balance fidelity to the source text with the naturalness and clarity needed for target readers. This article presents findings from research analyzing the translation of Madurese cultural expressions into English. The study examines distinctive cultural expressions found in Madura, the strategies translators employ to convey these expressions, and the impact of these strategies on message transfer and translation quality. The research draws data from translators working in local government, private sectors, and educational institutions, as well as from official and unofficial documents containing Madurese cultural expressions. Data collection methods include document analysis, questionnaires, and in-depth interviews, analyzed using an interactive model.

Abstract

This study examines the Badanan tradition as a practice of silaturrahmi (maintaining social ties) among the Javanese diaspora in Parit 7 Pulai Kijang, Reteh District, Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau. This tradition, which lasts from the first to the sixth day of Syawal, is a local manifestation of the hadiths of Prophet Muhammad SAW concerning the importance of maintaining familial and social relationships. Using a living hadith approach, this research aims to understand how the values embedded in the hadiths are realized in the social life of the community. Data was collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, and literature review. The findings indicate that the Badan tradition, once an essential instrument for preserving social harmony and Islamic values within the community, has declined in recent years due to changes in lifestyle, modernization, and a reduced participation of younger generations. This study recommends revitalizing the Badan tradition as a means of reawakening the values of hadith in the social practices of local Muslim communities.

Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Jakarta Smart Card (KIP) program in increasing access to education and reducing dropout rates in Indonesia. A literature study and document review approach was used to analyze the program's coverage, aid distribution, and impact on school participation rates. The results show that KIP has made a positive contribution, but uneven distribution and delays in disbursement of funds hamper its effectiveness, especially in remote areas. Administrative constraints and low digital literacy are also major challenges. Recommendations focus on strengthening the data collection system, technological innovation, and improving cross-sector coordination to support the sustainability of the program. By evaluating these obstacles, it is hoped that more targeted solutions can be found. This study provides important input for improving national education policy. Increasing the effectiveness of the KIP program not only contributes to access to education but also to human resource development. This study is expected to be a reference for improving education policy and implementing similar programs in the future.

Abstract

This article explores the inclusive and contextual Islamic preaching practices (da'wah) among Muslim communities in Japan, particularly those of Indonesian origin. In a predominantly non-Muslim, secular, and culturally homogeneous society, Islamic da'wah in Japan faces unique challenges that require adaptive and creative approaches. Rather than relying on doctrinal messages, Muslim communities engage in social participation, symbolic communication, and cultural dialogue, turning mosques like Tokyo Camii into centers of interfaith and intercultural exchange. Drawing from the frameworks of cultural da'wah, cross-cultural communication, and minority Muslim dynamics, this study finds that da'wah in Japan functions as a space of encounter—bridging Islamic values with Japanese cultural norms through everyday actions, symbolic gestures, and social initiatives. Despite facing stereotypes and limitations, Muslim communities respond with inclusive and humanistic strategies that emphasize coexistence over conversion. The findings suggest that da'wah in minority contexts, such as Japan, is most effective when it emphasizes social harmony, mutual respect, and cultural sensitivity. This study contributes to broader discussions on Islam in non-Muslim societies and highlights da'wah as a meaningful form of cross-cultural engagement in the Asia Pacific.
