Abstract

Internet or Social Network Site is a new media facilitating collective action and a "public sphere" for political and social interactions. The Internet is not only a big marketplace. Blogs, wikis and other social networking sites provide a technological basis for grassroots action to coordinate and communicate. Movement of 1,000,000 Facebookers Supporting Chandra Hamzah and Bibit Samad Riyanto in Indonesia 2009, was launched after the two suspended Corruption Eradication Commission (KFK) officers were arrested on suspicion of abuse of power. This, become an interesting new phenomenon in Indonesia. It is an example of wide spread popular support for the anti corruption leaders and the anti graft movement. My paper aims to explore the development of social media in Indonesia and its contribution to implementation of transparency and anti graft movement. Particularly, the paper will identify the role of Facebook in establishing a non political party, online parliament and the future of it in Indonesia as the democratic moslem country in the world. Many active discussions has been generated along 2000s on the topic of social media and its effect on the formation and mobilization of social and political movement. For example, the emergence of the Coffee Party in US. Since 2009, Facebook in Indonesia has played an important role in politics and its importance was first noticed by KPK case. Since then there has been growth in the role of Facebook in political movements. The power of civil society in the form of Facebookers replaces democratic checks and balance which in the real world should be the function of political parties in Indonesian parliament.

Abstract

Algebraic thinking is important for developing students' mathematical generalization abilities, and identifying patterns, shapes, and symbols. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach that aims to describe the profile of students' algebraic thinking in solving modeling problems. The subjects of this study were 158 fifth-grade students in two private schools in Surakarta, Central Java. The data collection instrument used was six test questions related to the modeling component adopted from Ralston. Prior to use, the instrument was validated by 3 elementary school mathematics learning experts and tested on 10 students who were not the subject of the study. Based on the test results, there were 12 students who scored in the high category. This study focuses on analyzing the algebraic thinking profile of students with high categories. The results showed that high-category subjects were able to demonstrate understanding related to modeling indicators in algebraic thinking, namely understanding the meaning of the equal sign (=) as an equivalence relationship, using variables to solve problems in the form of equations, and understanding the relationships between arithmetic operations. However, a small number of subjects still experience calculation errors and understanding errors in algebraic operations. Hence, it can be concluded that subjects with high categories are able to demonstrate algebraic thinking skills in the modeling component

Abstract

The transformation in the media landscape in Indonesia is underscored by the emergence of digital-centric media entities and a new mode of news production distinctly divergent from traditional journalism. The purpose of this study is to examine the evolving business model of digital journalism, a sector experiencing rapid growth following the advent of the internet, social media, and the consolidation of online journalism since 2010. Employing a qualitative-descriptive method, this research is designed to capture the digital journalism business model in Indonesia's post-traditional print and broadcast media systems. From 2021 to 2023, the authors meticulously observed the contents and management of selected news media outlets, conducted semi-structured interviews, and gathered pertinent documents. The key question of this study centers on the nature of the business model underpinning journalism on digital platforms and its repercussions for the interest of news production and publication. The study reveals that business models for digital news media remain unstandardized, and the ecosystem of platform-based journalism has yet to achieve a healthy climate. From the perspective of digital news consumption, the prevailing culture of gratuitous (free) news culture and the concern of keeping trusted news media pose significant obstacles for news corporations in sustaining their operations.

Abstract

This article deals with traditional religious authority in a given context, namely the village of Madani in Riau, Sumatra, Indonesia. It specifically asks how this traditional religious authority is established and shaped in the context of an Indonesian rural Muslim society. This article uses observation and interviews to collect data based on an ethnographic study. This village is selected to be the place of study because it represents the typical characteristics of Indonesian villages. This article finds that traditional religious authority in Indonesia is not established and shaped linearly. However, it is compromised and contested. Although Muslims in this community regard a Kiai as a respected man having a religious charisma, this society also contests his religious authority to contribute to the resignation of the kiai from the Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School). This resignation supports him in developing his Tariqah (Sufi Order), followed by many community Muslims. Although he does not own a Pesantren, it indicates that his religious authority has been negotiated through the Tariqah. This negotiation implicates that traditional religious authority in Indonesia is not given without contestation from the Muslim community. Furthermore, it also indicates that traditional religious authority's trajectory and shape in rural areas are not monolithic, depending on society's social and cultural context.

Abstract

This study examines the evolution of clerical attire, specifically the so-called Arab or hajj attire, comprising robes and turbans, and its role in shaping the identity of Nusantara clerics over centuries. In the context of the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad, the question of the relevance of Arab attire to the Nusantara is a subject of divergent scholarly opinion. Some clerics consider it to be irrelevant, whilst others regard it as sunnah fi'liyah, analysing it from an ethical and aesthetic perspective. The present study employs qualitative methods, with a focus on historical approaches. To this end, it utilises a range of sources, including autobiographies and biographies, visual materials, such as images of clerics, and a series of interviews conducted with 19 individuals who are both historical witnesses and relatives of the aforementioned clerics. It is evident that in the 19th century, the adherents of Islam in the region of Riau were distinguished by their distinctive attire, which included the wearing of robes and turbans. The scholars' attire represented their elevated economic, social, and political status, in addition to their substantial religious authority. The robe and turban also became symbols of the scholars' anti-colonial struggle. The historical and cultural factors that influenced this acceptance included the Hajj pilgrimage, colonial government regulations pertaining to Hajj attire, the harmonisation of Arab attire with Malay culture, and the emergence of Sufi movements. Nevertheless, since the 20th century, the attire of Islamic scholars has experienced substantial modification, primarily due to the integration of Western educational frameworks and the rise of the contemporary Indonesian elite. The attire of clerics in Riau comprises trousers, Western-style suits, ties, and hats, in addition to skullcaps or peci, which collectively serve to establish a uniform appearance that mirrors that of other Indonesian intellectuals who have undergone modern educational pursuits. Moreover, religious attire in the form of robes and turbans began to be adopted as a collective identifier, rather than exclusively as a religious or clerical vestment, by certain Muslim communities
