Abstract

Thinking styles represent individuals’ preferred ways of processing and solving problems, which may influence the development of higher-order thinking such as critical thinking. In the digital era, learning environments supported by technology, such as research-based electronic worksheets (e-LKPD), can accommodate diverse thinking styles and foster critical thinking. This study aimed to examine the influence of thinking styles on students’ critical thinking skills in biology learning assisted by e-LKPD. A total of 112 high school students were selected through random sampling. Data were collected using the Yanpiaw Creative-Critical Thinking Styles (YCCTS) instrument and a standardized critical thinking skills test. Regression analysis was employed to measure the relationship between thinking styles and indicators of critical thinking, including interpreting, analyzing, applying, evaluating, and concluding. The regression results indicated a significant relationship between thinking styles and critical thinking skills (p 0.05). The R² values demonstrated strong predictive power across all indicators: interpreting (82.4%), analyzing (85.7%), applying (81.6%), evaluating (85.5%), and concluding (79.9%). Students with dominant critical thinking styles showed higher scores in critical thinking tests compared to those with balanced or creative styles. These findings suggest that thinking styles can serve as predictors of students’ critical thinking performance. Moreover, the use of research-based e-LKPD provides a supportive learning environment that enhances the expression of thinking styles, thereby strengthening critical thinking skills. Integrating digital, research-based learning resources is an effective strategy to align with students’ thinking styles and promote critical thinking in science education.

Abstract

Abstract

Despite global reforms in science education that emphasize collaboration, critical thinking, and real-world application, many secondary students continue to struggle with scientific reasoning and communication, particularly in Biology. This study addresses this gap by evaluating the effectiveness of the Critical Analysis and Discussion Comparison with Extended Learning Community (CADC-ELC) method in enhancing students' written and oral communication and cognitive performance. Employing a quasi-experimental design with 90 tenth-grade students in Indonesia, participants were divided into three groups: CADC-ELC, CADC-only, and conventional instruction. Data were collected using validated observation sheets and a 30-item cognitive test and analyzed using the Games-Howell post-hoc test. Results revealed that CADC-ELC significantly outperformed other groups in all areas: written communication improved from M = 31.0 to 70.3, oral communication from M = 9.1 to 17.06, and cognitive scores from M = 33.3 to 83.1 (all p < .001). These findings suggest that CADC-ELC offers a robust, globally relevant model for strengthening science education through dialogic, scaffolded, and context-rich instruction.

Abstract

The development of Science, Technology, and Science (IPTEKS) shows that the world is currently undergoing a very rapid transformation. Therefore, improving the quality of human resources, especially the quality of education, is an important key. Quality education produces skilled human resources, the ability to think creatively, and the readiness to face global competition. In 21st-century learning, several abilities must be developed, one of which is the ability to think creatively. Technology integration in the learning cycle 5E is needed with educational games, namely Nearpod. This study aims to determine the effect of the nearpod-based 5E learning cycle learning model on students' creative thinking abilities. The method used is an experiment with a quasi-experimental research design and a non-randomised control group pretest-posttest design. The population in this study were all students at SMA Negeri 7 Bengkulu City, with a research sample consisting of two (2) classes, namely the experimental and control classes, with a total sample of 74 students. Sampling was carried out using the purposive sampling technique. Data collection was carried out through a written test to measure students' creative thinking abilities in the form of five (5) essay questions. The data analysis technique uses a hypothesis test (t-test) with a significance level of 5% (0.05). Based on the results of the hypothesis test (t-test) on the posttest value of creative thinking ability, the value obtained is 0.000 <0.05, so there is an influence of the nearpod-based 5E learning cycle learning model on students' creative thinking abilities.
