Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of Islamic education in pesantren in building social resilience in disaster-prone areas in East Java, Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach through case studies at three pesantren (Pesantren Ar-Rosyid, Pesantren Tangguh Bencana, and Pesantren Tebuireng), the research identifies how pesantren integrate Islamic values such as tawakkal (trust in God), sabar (patience), ukhuwah (brotherhood), and ta'awun (cooperation) into disaster mitigation and post-disaster social recovery activities. The empirical findings show that pesantren not only teach students mental and social resilience but also actively collaborate with the community and government in disaster recovery efforts. The findings highlight that pesantren play a central role in building strong social networks, which are crucial for accelerating post-disaster recovery. Pesantrens are also involved in disaster education, teaching practical skills and profound social values. These findings have practical implications for the development of faith-based disaster mitigation policies and the use of pesantren as strategic partners in disaster mitigation and recovery programs at both the local and national levels. This research also contributes to social resilience theory by adding a spiritual dimension and integrating religious values into community-based social resilience strategies.

Abstract

This research aims to examine efforts to internalize Aswaja Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) values ??in religious activities at SMKN Jatiluhur, Purwakarta. A qualitative approach using the case study method was used to explore the concept and process of internalizing Aswaja NU values, especially tawassuth (moderate), tawazun (balanced), i'tidal (fair), and tasamuh (tolerant). Data was collected through interviews, observation and documentation. Research findings reveal that Jatiluhur Vocational School seeks to internalize the values ??of Aswaja NU through religious activities such as lectures, congregational prayers, reading the Koran, and commemorating Islamic holidays. The internalization process is carried out in stages, including Aswaja Knowing (providing understanding), Aswaja Feeling (growing a sense of the importance of Aswaja NU values), and Aswaja Action (implementing values ??in real action). This research also confirms the importance of role models from the entire academic community in the internalization process. Even though it does not have a specific written design, Jatiluhur Vocational School integrates NU Aswaja values ??into existing religious activities in an effort to prevent radicalism and build a moderate and tolerant character. The findings of this research contribute to strengthening moderate and tolerant religious education in the school environment to prevent the spread of radical ideas and promote diversity.

Abstract

In the context of rapid global change, pesantren face increasing pressure to equip santri with 21st-century skills essential for global competitiveness. This study explores how Al-Yasini Islamic Boarding School integrates 21st-century skills within an Islamic framework to sustain its religious identity while enhancing global competitiveness. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with kiai, teachers, and students, along with classroom observations and document analysis. Thematic analysis was applied to identify key patterns in leadership, independence, and digital literacy, while methodological triangulation was employed to ensure analytical credibility. The findings reveal that the integration of Islamic soft skills, the 4C learning framework (critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication), the digitalization of Islamic literacy, and the cultivation of leadership and independence enables the institution to produce globally competitive graduates. However, several challenges persist, including limited technological infrastructure, resistance to modernization among some Islamic boarding schools, and insufficient teacher adaptability to innovative pedagogical methods. To address these gaps, this study recommends strengthening collaboration between Islamic boarding schools, higher education institutions, and industry partners to enhance student preparedness for global challenges. The study contributes to both theory and practice by providing a context-specific yet globally relevant framework for Islamic education reform.

Abstract

The role of the Kyai in maintaining the stability and character of santri (Islamic boarding school students) is a fundamental responsibility that cannot be replaced. The dynamic interplay of cultural diversity and varying social conditions must be carefully considered in managing pesantren, especially amidst the widespread issue of radicalism. This study aims to analyze how the Kyai's leadership model, grounded in local wisdom, functions as a strategy to prevent radicalism within pesantren environments, and how this model can contribute to the development of relevant and high-quality education in the Global South. It also explores the challenges faced by Kyai leadership when rooted in local cultural values. This research employs a qualitative method with a case study approach. The primary sources of data include Kyai, pesantren administrators, and santri, collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis follows Yin's case study framework, involving pattern matching, explanation building, time-series analysis, and repeated observation. Data validity is ensured through triangulation of methods, sources, and theoretical perspectives. The findings reveal that the Kyai’s leadership model based on the prophetic (Nubuwwah) approach, integrated with the pesantren’s local wisdom namely the Panca Jiwa (five foundational values) and the four spiritual pillars serves as a key ideological defense mechanism against the spread of radicalism in the pesantren. Future research is recommended to expand this model across various pesantren and to apply methodological innovations that test the effectiveness of this integrated prophetic-local leadership approach in responding to global challenges.

Abstract

This study examines the role of dzikir as a cognitive reprogramming intervention in transforming internalized negative beliefs among Muslim students. Rooted in the intersection of Islamic education, cognitive psychology, and emerging neuro-religious perspectives, the study addresses how repetitive parental narratives such as “life is difficult” or “earning money is hard” contribute to the formation of maladaptive cognitive schemas and scarcity-oriented mindsets. Despite the growing body of research on cognitive restructuring, the integration of Islamic spiritual practices into contemporary psychological frameworks remains limited. This study employs a convergent mixed-methods design, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative data were collected through a quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test design involving 80 participants and analyzed using paired sample t-tests and effect size analysis. Qualitative data were obtained from semi-structured interviews with 20 participants and analyzed using thematic analysis to explore participants’ lived experiences and cognitive transformation processes. The findings reveal statistically significant improvements in cognitive belief orientation, including a reduction in scarcity mindset and an increase in positive life orientation and self-efficacy (p < .001). Effect size analysis indicates a strong practical impact of the intervention. Qualitative findings further highlight three key themes: internalized negative narratives, emergence of cognitive awareness, and the transformative role of dzikir in reshaping internal dialogue and emotional states. These results suggest that structured and meaning-oriented dzikir practices can serve as an effective culturally grounded approach to cognitive restructuring. While the study does not directly measure neural activity, the findings provide indirect evidence of possible neurocognitive adaptation associated with repetitive spiritual practices. This study contributes to the development of a Neuro-Religious Cognitive Reprogramming Framework, bridging Islamic spiritual praxis and cognitive science. The findings also offer practical implications for integrating dzikir-based interventions into Islamic education and counseling to promote healthier cognitive patterns and improved psychological well-being.
