Abstract

Background: Medication adherence in geriatric patients is a major challenge as polypharmacy increases the risk of drug-related problems (DRPs). The role of clinical pharmacy is important in addressing these issues through evidence-based approaches. Objective: To review the effectiveness of various clinical pharmacy interventions in improving medication adherence in geriatric patients. Methods: This article used a systematic review of 13 literature selected from 934 articles based on inclusion criteria in the last 10 years, using PubMed and Google Scholar databases. The focus of the analysis included education, monitoring, and the use of tools such as pill cards and medication reminder charts. Results: Clinical pharmacy interventions, such as the use of Beers and STOPP/START criteria, counseling, and educational programs using tools, were shown to improve adherence in geriatric patients. Programs such as pill boxes increased adherence by 83.33%. However, some tools such as medication reminder charts had limited effectiveness. Conclusion: A collaborative approach, including patient and family education, monitoring, and clinical criteria-based therapy adjustments, is essential to improve medication adherence in geriatric patients, which directly improves their quality of life.

Abstract

This literature study aims to evaluate pharmacy students' knowledge and attitudes regarding pharmaceutical waste disposal from an ecopharmacology perspective. Ecopharmacology is a branch of science that examines the environmental impact of drug residues, particularly how pharmaceutical compounds affect ecosystems after disposal. This perspective is important because unused or improperly discarded medications can contaminate water and soil, and disrupt ecological balance. The study employs a qualitative literature review method by analyzing articles from the PubMed and Scopus databases over the past ten years. The results show that although pharmacy students possess basic knowledge about the environmental risks of improper drug disposal, there remains a gap in practical application. Ecopharmacology education has proven to play a significant role in raising awareness and fostering environmentally responsible attitudes. Conclusion: Pharmacy students have basic knowledge about the environmental impact of drug disposal, but its implementation is still suboptimal.Recommendation: It is recommended to integrate ecopharmacology into the pharmacy curriculum and provide proper and easily accessible pharmaceutical waste disposal facilities.

Abstract

Drug interactions between antibiotics and antacids represent an important clinical issue that can affect therapeutic efficacy and increase the risk of treatment failure. The concurrent use of these drug classes frequently occurs in clinical practice, particularly in patients receiving antibiotic therapy who also present with gastrointestinal complaints. This systematic literature review aims to evaluate the clinical trial evidence regarding antibiotic–antacid interactions, focusing on pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic mechanisms, clinical implications, and current research limitations. Relevant articles were identified through PubMed, Google Scholar, and other scientific databases using standardized keywords. Literature selection followed the PRISMA guidelines to ensure the quality and relevance of included studies. The analysis revealed that antacids and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) can significantly reduce the bioavailability of antibiotics, especially fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines, through chelation with metal ions and by increasing gastric pH, thereby impairing drug absorption. Concomitant use of antibiotics and PPIs was also associated with a higher risk of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), particularly in elderly or comorbid patients. Conversely, newer acid-suppressing agents such as vonoprazan demonstrated good efficacy in Helicobacter pylori eradication regimens without compromising antibiotic activity. Despite these findings, most studies were retrospective, with limited sample sizes and specific populations. Therefore, large-scale prospective clinical trials are needed to strengthen the evidence base. A comprehensive understanding of antibiotic–antacid interactions is essential to support rational, safe, and effective prescribing practices in clinical settings.

Abstract

Reliable clinical diagnosis of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) is necessary for personalizing tamoxifen medication according to CYP2D6*10 genetic variations. Our research aimed to create a recombinant plasmid for external control material with a molecular size of 3812 bp. The recombinant plasmid was achieved by cloning an 838 bp gene insert of CYP2D6*10 rs1065852 into a 2974 bp pJET1.2 plasmid into Escherichia coli DH10B and selection on ampicillin agar medium. Isolated E. coli recombinants provided the plasmid molecules for analysis. Bi-directional sequencing and Real-Time PCR confirmed the presence of wild-type and mutant rs1065852 DNA fragments in the plasmid, namely homozygote CC and TT. The conclusion is that we have successfully introduced a novel recombinant plasmid developed by cloning the SNP rs1065852, which carries the 100C>T mutation, using pJET 1.2/blunt system, which could significantly enhance the accuracy of clinical SNP diagnostics for personalized medicine in breast cancer treatment.

Abstract

Drug abuse is an act of using one or a combination of drugs in relatively high doses with the aim not for medication but to achieve a pleasure without regard to other aspects. Drug abuse can be motivated by several factors such as a weak personality, a high sense of curiosity, peer invitations, social problems and pressures, and the ease with which drugs can be obtained at low prices. One of the drugs that is often abused is tramadol. This is because tramadol can provide a euphoric effect. Without realizing it, tramadol abuse actually causes other, more dangerous effects. Therefore, writing this review article aims to provide an overview of other effects resulting from the abuse of tramadol drugs. The writing of this article review uses a systematic review method in which data is taken from national and international scientific articles or journals with a limitation of publication in the last 10 years. Articles obtained from searches using Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct. From the results of the review, it is known that the misuse of tramadol drugs can be fatal because it can cause vomiting, seizures, sedation, and even death. Not only that, tramadol in high doses also affects fertility factors such as sperm defects and erectile dysfunction. Special attention is needed for cases of tramadol abuse because most of these activities are carried out by teenagers.

Abstract

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection and AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. HIV and AIDS cannot be separated because AIDS is a disease caused by the HIV virus. The HIV virus will attack the human immune system, more specifically attacking helper T cells, this will cause a decrease in the immune system of infected individuals. The risk of spreading HIV/AIDS infection occurs more through unsafe sex than through drug use. There are so many negative impacts obtained by ODHA both from the outside environment and from within themselves
