Abstract

Abstract

This community service activity describes the implementation and outcomes of a workshop-based training on the use of ClassDojo for pre-service teachers at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Nias. The training aimed to develop participants’ digital teaching competence, particularly in classroom management, student engagement, and home-school communication. Ten participants attended the workshop, which combined live demonstrations, hands-on practice, and collaborative discussions. The training covered account creation, classroom setup, behavior management, student portfolios, parent messaging, and classroom analytics. Data were collected through pre- and post-training questionnaires, observation, and participant reflections. Results showed that all participants successfully completed basic features, while completion rates for advanced features such as messaging and analytics ranged from 70% to 80% due to time and connectivity constraints. The workshop effectively improved participants’ confidence and readiness to integrate ClassDojo into their teaching practice, demonstrating that structured, hands-on training can significantly enhance digital literacy among pre-service teachers.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of training in developing English language teaching materials using the CarouselMaker platform among fourth-semester English Education students at Nias University. The program aimed to equip students with skills in creating interactive and digital-based learning content suitable for 21st-century classrooms. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with data collected through questionnaires, and field notes. Results indicate that while most participants improved their technical ability in using CarouselMaker, many still relied on facilitator guidance and lacked confidence in applying the tool independently. Discussion participation was also limited. Despite these challenges, students showed enthusiasm for continuing similar trainings and recognized the relevance of digital tools in modern English Language Teaching (ELT). The findings highlight the need for extended mentoring and a personalized training approach to strengthen participants’ independence and pedagogical confidence. This training underscores the importance of preparing future English teachers to utilize digital media effectively, fostering innovation and engagement in the learning process.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of using Chat GPT on students' ability to share knowledge in a Language Research class at the English Language Education Study Program, Nias University. The research gap lies in the lack of understanding of the specific impact of GPT Chat on knowledge sharing practices in a classroom environment. This study used a correlation quantitative method that used a research instrument which was a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire as distributed to 20 fourth semester B students. Data analysis showed a very strong correlation (r = 0.971) between the use of Chat GPT (mean score 17.4) and knowledge sharing ability (mean score 16.6). Hypothesis testing yielded a value of 0.9735, indicating a statistically significant result. These findings suggest that Chat GPT has a significant influence on students' knowledge sharing ability in Language Research classes, which has important implications for the integration of Al technology in learning. Further research is needed to investigate other aspects of the use of Chat GPT in educational contexts and to develop effective guidelines for its use.

Abstract

The use of animation-based digital tools has grown more and more important in preparing pre-service teachers for classrooms in the twenty-first century. This study examines the efficacy of a focused training program that exposed Nias University English education students to Videoscribe, an animated instructional video creation tool. The program focused on learning through practice, reflection, and visual-verbal integration, and it was based on the experiential learning theory (Kolb, 1984) and multimedia learning theory (Mayer, 2021). A hands-on session with a descriptive qualitative approach was attended by nine participants. Field notes, observation checklists, and questionnaires were used to gather data. The results demonstrated that when utilizing VideoScribe to teach English, participants' technical proficiency, pedagogical knowledge, and self-confidence all significantly improved. These difficulties show how important ongoing mentoring and scaffolded help are. According to the study's findings, short-term, hands-on training can help close the knowledge gap between theory and digital teaching proficiency. Additionally, it adds to the increasing amount of data supporting the inclusion of digital media literacy in teacher preparation programs. The consequences go beyond curriculum design and policy-making, indicating that in order to foster future educators' confidence and inventiveness, technology integration should be methodically incorporated into teacher training programs.

Classroom management is an essential aspect that influences the effectiveness of learning, especially in speaking skills, which require active interaction between teachers and students. This study employs a qualitative approach using observation, interview, and documentation methods involving English teachers and students at UPTD SMP Negeri 5 Gunungsitoli. The focus of the analysis includes classroom management strategies used by teachers to create a conducive learning environment, time management techniques, the arrangement of student interactions, and the handling of disturbances during speaking lessons. The findings reveal that teachers use a combination of classroom management techniques such as grouping students for discussions, providing clear instructions, and giving positive reinforcement to motivate learners. However, challenges remain in controlling distractions and maintaining students’ focus during speaking activities.
