Abstract

The goal of this research is to identify the main factor that influences students when learning English. A survey was conducted with 57 students from the English Education Study Program at the University of Nias participating. Data was gathered using a questionnaire on Google Form that employed a Likert scale, and it was analyzed statistically to obtain descriptive statistics and Pearson Correlation results. The results reveal that intelligence shows a perfect positive correlation in sig. (2-tailed) with all factors at levels of 0.01 and 0.05. It has an unstandardized coefficient (B) of 4.439 and a standard error of 0.657, culminating in a t-value of 6.761. The significance level of intelligence is below 0.001, suggesting that it is an extremely important part of the model. The conclusion of the research indicates that intelligence is the primary factor among all the influences on students in learning English, as determined by Beta Coefficient.

Abstract

Character education is a systematic approach to encourage the development of positive character traits and virtues in individuals, usually in an educational setting. The purpose of this research is to find out the teachers’ efforts in building students’ character and to find out the causes of students' poor character in Learning English. The method used in this research is qualitative analysis. The instruments in this research are interviews and observations. Data was obtained from interviews with English teachers to find out the teachers’ efforts in building students’ character and analyzing what indicators values have been implemented by teachers in the classroom while teaching. After analyzing teachers’ efforts in building students’ character in learning English through interviews and observations, the researchers found that both English teachers at SMP Negeri 2 Hiliduho have efforts in building students’ character, namely by inviting students to worship before the subject started, reviewing previous lesson to build students’ communicative value, providing opportunities for students to ask questions to build students’ curiosity value. However, in applying character indicator values to students, of 34 indicator values, teachers have applied 27 indicators to students, and 5 indicators have not been applied by both teachers and 2 indicators have not been applied by either teacher However, both English teachers have made good efforts in building students' character in learning English, so that the values applied have become a habit for students at SMP Negeri 2 Hiliduho in the eighth grade.

Abstract

The Nearpod Implementation Training, attended by ten students from the Indonesian Language Education Study Program was conducted, with the aim of enhancing student engagement in learning and preparing gen-z pre-service teachers to become interactive and innovative educators. this activity was designed based on students’ needs for improved digital literacy and pedagogical competence in designing technology-integrated learning. the method included need identification, in-person training, demonstration of Nearpod features, and hands-on practice in creating interactive learning content. The training evaluation used three instruments: a training evaluation questionnaire, field notes, and a participant assessment rubric. the results revealed significant improvements in five key areas: technological proficiency, student engagement strategies, confidence in digital teaching, creativity, and peer collaboration. Participants with diverse technological backgrounds were able to show meaningful progress due to the inclusive and interactive training approach. these findings emphasize the importance of strengthening pre-service teachers’ competencies through participatory digital tools like Nearpod to address the challenges of 21st century learning.

Abstract

Teacher pedagogic competence affects the achievement of effective and quality learning, where teachers are expected to master all indicators of pedagogic competence. However, in the learning process that occurs, pedagogic competence is still not maximally applied by English teachers at SMP Negeri 2 Lotu. The purpose of this research was to find out what are the teachers’ pedagogic competences used by the teachers in teaching English and to find out the factors that influence teachers' pedagogic competence in teaching English. The method used in this research is qualitative analysis. The instruments were observation, interview and documentation. Data were obtained from observation which were then analyzed to reveal teachers' pedagogic competence. Data from interviews were analyzed to find out the factors that influence teachers' pedagogic competence in teaching English. Data from documentation used as relevant data to support in the research. After analyzing the pedagogic competence of teachers through observation and interviews, indicators of pedagogic competence that they used, namely mastering the characteristics of learners from the physical, moral, spiritual, social, cultural, emotional, and intellectual aspects, mastering learning theory and learning principles, facilitating the development of students' potential to actualize their various potential, organizing assessment and evaluating of learning processes and outcomes. Pedagogic competence that English teachers do not yet have are mastering learning theory and learning principles, utilizing information and communication technology for learning purposes and developing the curriculum related to the subjects taught. This is due to several factors, namely teaching experience, educational facilities, teacher income and principal supervision.

Abstract

Abstract:  This training aimed to improve the skills of Nias University English Education students in designing flipbook-based digital teaching materials through the Heyzine website. The method used was hands-on training with a collaborative approach, involving a supervising lecturer and three students as tutors. Ten students participated in this training, starting with account creation, uploading PDF files, customizing the display, and storing and sharing flipbooks online. The training results showed that all participants successfully created interactive flipbooks, with a variety of creative designs appropriate to the context of English learning. Based on observations and questionnaires, nine out of ten students stated that they felt more confident in utilizing digital technology in the learning process. Furthermore, all students considered the training materials very clear, relevant, and helped them understand the practicalities of creating digital teaching media. Despite some technical challenges such as unstable internet connections and inadequate devices, the training generally succeeded in strengthening the digital skills of prospective teachers and encouraging them to be more innovative in utilizing creative learning media in the digital era.Abstrak: Kegiatan pelatihan ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Nias dalam merancang materi ajar digital berbasis flipbook melalui website Heyzine. Metode yang digunakan adalah pelatihan langsung dengan pendekatan kolaboratif, melibatkan dosen pendamping dan tiga mahasiswa sebagai tutor. Kegiatan ini diikuti oleh sepuluh mahasiswa yang dilatih mulai dari tahap pembuatan akun, pengunggahan file PDF, kustomisasi tampilan, hingga penyimpanan dan pembagian flipbook secara daring. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan bahwa seluruh peserta berhasil menyusun flipbook interaktif, dengan variasi desain yang kreatif dan sesuai konteks pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Berdasarkan hasil observasi dan kuesioner, sebanyak sembilan dari sepuluh mahasiswa menyatakan merasa lebih percaya diri dalam memanfaatkan teknologi digital dalam proses pembelajaran. Selain itu, semua mahasiswa menilai materi pelatihan sangat jelas, relevan, dan membantu mereka memahami pembuatan media ajar digital secara praktis. Meskipun terdapat beberapa kendala teknis seperti koneksi internet yang tidak stabil dan perangkat yang kurang memadai, pelatihan ini secara umum berhasil memperkuat keterampilan digital calon guru dan mendorong mereka untuk lebih inovatif dalam memanfaatkan media pembelajaran kreatif di era digital.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kesiapan guru dalam mengimplementasikan perangkat pembelajaran berdasarkan Kurikulum Merdeka. Penelitian ini memberikan gambaran tentang apa yang dilakukan dan dipersiapkan oleh guru selama proses implementasi kurikulum Mandiri di sekolah. Penelitian ini dilakukan di UPTD SMP Negeri 4 Gunungsitoli. Pendekatan penelitian yang digunakan adalah pendekatan penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Data penelitian ini diperoleh melalui observasi, kuesioner, wawancara dan studi dokumen. Hasil dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kesiapan guru bahasa Inggris dalam mengimplementasikan kurikulum Merdeka dapat dilihat dari: Guru memanfaatkan perangkat pembelajaran terkait dengan pemahaman implementasi kurikulum Merdeka; Guru belajar lebih banyak tentang persiapan dan perencanaan proses pembelajaran; Pada tahap pelaksanaan pembelajaran, guru telah mengimplementasikan media instruksi kurikulum Mandiri; Ketersediaan sarana dan prasarana mendukung proses implementasi perangkat pembelajaran kurikulum Merdeka. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa guru bahasa Inggris di UPTD SMP Negeri 4 Gunungsitoli berusaha semaksimal mungkin untuk mempersiapkan implementasi kurikulum Merdeka di sekolah.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis minat baca siswa melalui penggunaan cerita rakyat dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di SMP Negeri 2 Hiliduho. Latar belakang penelitian ini didasarkan pada rendahnya minat siswa dalam membaca teks Bahasa Inggris dan perlunya pendekatan pembelajaran yang kontekstual dan menarik. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa observasi, wawancara, dan angket. Subjek penelitian terdiri dari 21 siswa kelas VIII-B. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa membaca cerita rakyat dalam Bahasa Inggris memiliki sejumlah kendala, seperti kosakata yang terbatas, teks yang panjang sehingga sulit dipahami dan menimbulkan kebingungan siswa, serta struktur kalimat yang kompleks. Selain itu, ditemukan juga beberapa faktor yang memengaruhi minat baca, seperti rendahnya rasa percaya diri, gugup, dan takut melakukan kesalahan saat membaca. Sebagian besar siswa menunjukkan motivasi intrinsik yang tinggi, rasa senang dalam membaca, minat terhadap cerita rakyat, frekuensi membaca yang baik, dan sikap positif terhadap kegiatan membaca. Dengan pendekatan yang tepat dan dukungan pembelajaran yang tepat, cerita rakyat dapat menjadi media yang efektif untuk menumbuhkan minat baca siswa dalam konteks pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

This research explores the role of English teachers in forming students’ discipline character in the context of Kurikulum Merdeka at SMP Negeri 3 Bawolato. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research investigates the causes of student indiscipline and how teachers respond to it through observation and interviews. Findings show that lack of parental supervision, peer influence, low motivation, and poor study habits are major contributing factors. The English teacher plays three roles: role model, classroom manager, and motivator. This research emphasizes the importance of character-based education in supporting curriculum implementation and student development.

Abstract

Pelatihan pembuatan kuesioner digital berbasis JotForm bagi mahasiswa anak kos dilatarbelakangi oleh rendahnya literasi digital dan keterampilan teknis dalam pembuatan instrumen penelitian di kalangan mahasiswa dengan keterbatasan akses teknologi. Kegiatan ini bertujuan meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa anak kos dalam membuat, mendesain, dan mendistribusikan kuesioner digital secara mandiri untuk mendukung kegiatan akademik dan penelitian. Pelatihan dilaksanakan secara tatap muka dengan metode praktik langsung (learning by doing) dan partisipatif, melibatkan 10 peserta terpilih. Evaluasi dilakukan melalui catatan lapangan, lembar observasi, dan kuesioner. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan pada pengetahuan, keterampilan, dan kepercayaan diri peserta; seluruh peserta memahami langkah-langkah pembuatan kuesioner digital, mampu mengoperasikan JotForm, dan 90% peserta dapat membuat kuesioner secara mandiri. Mayoritas aktivitas praktik peserta dinilai Sempurna, Sangat Baik, dan Baik, tanpa ada aktivitas yang dinilai Kurang, sedangkan tantangan teknis seperti kendala perangkat dan koneksi internet dapat diatasi melalui kerja sama dan pendampingan tutor. Pelatihan ini terbukti efektif dalam meningkatkan literasi digital dan kompetensi mahasiswa anak kos, serta memberikan kontribusi nyata dalam mengurangi kesenjangan digital di lingkungan pendidikan tinggi.

Abstract

English is one of the essential subjects that students must master, particularly in writing skill. However, the reality 22 eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Mandrehe Utara still had difficulties in writing good and structured narrative texts. This was due to the lack of learning strategys that support students in organizing their ideas. Therefore, this study aimed to describe students’ ability in writing narrative texts through the implementation of concept mapping that is valid, practical, and effective. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observation, written tests, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that the use of concept mapping helped students to organize ideas systematically, understand the structure of narrative texts, and develop more coherent storylines. The teacher provided sufficient guidance, although written evaluations and individual feedback were not yet optimal. Most students showed improvement in narrative writing, especially in composing orientation, complication, and resolution. However, some students still found it difficult to develop creative conflicts and conclusions. The study concluded that concept mapping is an effective learning strategy to support the process of writing narrative texts. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers consistently apply this strategy and complement it with comprehensive evaluation to achieve better learning outcomes.
