Abstract

This research aims to uncover the role of the Miftahul Hidayah Islamic Boarding School in building cross-cultural solidarity in border areas. The research method used is qualitative with a case study approach, through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of the study show that pesantren not only functions as an institution of religious teaching, but also as a strategic center for social reconstruction that encourages the creation of intercultural harmony. Islamic boarding schools create learning spaces that are responsive to social dynamics, develop a curriculum based on the values of fairness and openness, and involve students in various social, cultural, and religious activities with the community. The leadership of kiai and teachers plays an important role in internalizing the values of tolerance, peace, and inclusivity that make students agents of peace and social stability. These findings also identify the challenges and opportunities faced by Islamic boarding schools, especially in establishing cooperation across religions, customs, and social institutions. This research confirms that Islamic values can be a solid foundation for the formation of cross-cultural solidarity while strengthening social cohesion in border areas.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has given rise to a generation of digital natives who possess different learning characteristics compared to previous generations. This condition requires adjustments in teaching and learning practices, including the assessment of Islamic Religious Education (PAI). Therefore, 21st-century skills encompassing critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication have become essential competencies that need to be integrated into the PAI assessment system. This study aims to analyze and formulate a concept of PAI assessment based on 21st-century skills that is relevant to the characteristics of digital natives. The research employs a qualitative approach through a literature study by examining books, journal articles, and relevant scientific documents. The results of the study indicate that valid PAI assessment for digital natives should be designed in an authentic, contextual, and technology-based manner, integrating cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects in a balanced way. Assessment should not only focus on the mastery of religious knowledge but also on students’ ability to internalize and implement Islamic values in their daily lives. These findings are expected to contribute conceptually to the development of an adaptive and responsive PAI assessment system in line with the demands of 21st-century education

Abstract

This study investigates the transmission of local Islamic texts used in West Kalimantan (Borneo, Indonesia) for Islamic religious education during the 20th century. It addresses a research gap concerning how Islamic knowledge was disseminated through printed works by local scholars. The research adopts a qualitative historical approach, employing content analysis through comprehensive reading, categorization, interpretation, and synthesis of primary sources. The findings reveal that Islamic educational materials in Borneo encompassed texts on theology (‘aqīdah, usūl al-dīn), jurisprudence (fiqh), history, and Qur’anic studies (‘ulūm al-Qur’ān), distributed via both commercial transactions and gifts by peers, religious officials, and sales agents. The study concludes that these transmission networks extended to neighboring Islamic sultanates and even reached Brunei Darussalam. Furthermore, these networks significantly influenced the development of educational institutions that integrated Islamic religious sciences with Western knowledge. The epistemology of Islamic education in Kalimantan was not merely a preserved tradition but a modern system open to knowledge, enabling the transmission of Islamic knowledge beyond formal institutions into broader society. This research makes an essential contribution to the development of Islamic education and the mapping of Islamic scholarship networks in the archipelago.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of surau as a center of Islamic education and a medium for strengthening social solidarity in the context of diversity, a social reality in Indonesian society. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and analysis of relevant documents. The results of this study indicate that the surau functions not only as a space for worship and religious learning, such as Quran recitation, congregational prayer, and the commemoration of Islamic religious holidays, but also as a social arena that facilitates interaction across age groups and ethnic backgrounds. Using Talcott Parsons' AGIL structural-functional framework, this study shows that the surau fulfills adaptive, goal-achieving, integrative, and latency-maintaining functions, collectively helping maintain social cohesion in the community. However, this study identified several obstacles, including limited youth and women's involvement and suboptimal use of digital technology in educational activities. In conclusion, surau remains a strategic institution for community-based Islamic education and social integration. This study contributes theoretically by extending the application of structural-functional analysis to local Islamic educational institutions and, practically, by offering insights into the development of an adaptive, inclusive, and responsive model of religious learning for contemporary Indonesian society.
