Abstract

Metacognitive skills are vital for empowering students, especially in subjects like biology that are intertwined with scientific activities. Science process skills are crucial for enhancing the learning process in science. This study aimed to assess the impact of STEM e-modules in Biotechnology on metacognitive and science process skills among students in the industrial agricultural sector, particularly those with low academic proficiency. The research followed a quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group design with a pretest-posttest research structure. The study population comprised public high schools in Jember, with class XII students from SMAN 1 Jember selected as the sample through cluster random sampling and class equivalence testing using ANOVA. Data collection involved essay tests, and prerequisite tests ensured homogeneity and normality. Hypothesis testing employed a two-way ANCOVA at a 0.5% significance level. The findings revealed that significant differences in metacognitive and science process skills when STEM e-modules were used in Biotechnology material, variations in metacognitive and science process skills based on students' academic abilities, and an interaction between STEM e-modules and academic ability on metacognitive and science process skills. This research suggests exploring the effects of STEM Biotechnology e-modules and academic ability on other dependent variables.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance elementary school teachers' technology literacy through training in artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning technologies, conducted within the Teacher Working Group (KKG) Cluster 02, Rambipuji District, Jember Regency. The activities were carried out using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, consisting of planning, action implementation, reflection, and evaluation stages. Evaluation results showed a significant improvement in participants' knowledge scores, with the average increasing from 51.1 (pre-test) to 81.8 (post-test). Participant engagement was also high, with over 85% of teachers attending all sessions and actively participating in discussions and hands-on practices. Classroom implementation reflections indicated that 80% of the teachers successfully attempted to create digital-based teaching media, although most still required further assistance. These outcomes demonstrate that the PAR approach, supported by practical modules and contextual mentoring, is effective in improving elementary school teachers’ technology literacy, while also promoting creative and adaptive learning in the digital era. This program can be recommended as a teacher empowerment model that is replicable in other regions with appropriate local contextual adjustments.

Abstract

Improving students scientific communication skills in the learning process has become a recent challenge. Scientific communication is one of the essential skills required, particularly in science education. The purpose of this research was to develop a learning tool of project based learning-science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (PjBL-STEM) to improve scientific communication skills and learning outcomes of the grade XII students on the topic of engineering and technology. This research employed a research and development (RD) method through 4-D model approach (define, design, develop, and disseminate). The study involved students of SMAN 5 Jember to implement a small (N=30) and large-scale (N=60) for this research. The research instruments of this study were expert validation, teacher and student response questionnaires, learning outcome tests, and scientific communication skills test. Expert validation showed that the learning tools (teaching instructional design, student worksheets, learning materials, and assessments) were excellent, with an average score above 4.0. Practicality tests by teachers and students confirmed the usefulness of this tool, categorizing it as "very practical" to "practical". In addition, the device significantly improved students' scientific communication skills (significance values of 0.001 and 0.000) and learning outcomes (mean scores of 77.43 for the small group and 77.35 for the large group). This study concludes that the developed PjBL-STEM device is feasible, practical, and effective in supporting 21st-century learning

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the validity, reliability, discriminating power, and difficulty level of an RPA-based assessment instrument designed to measure students' higher-order thinking skills. Using the 4-D model: Define, Design, Development, and Disseminate the instrument, consisting of 30 questions, was tested on 240 Grade VIII students in several Junior High Schools in Jember during the odd semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. From the 25 essay questions tested, an average score of 81% was achieved, with all questions meeting high validity criteria, indicating that the instrument measured the intended constructs accurately. The instrument demonstrated high reliability, with a coefficient of 0.86, ensuring consistent and dependable results. Its discriminating power was strong, with 20 questions rated as very good and 5 as good in distinguishing student abilities, ensuring meaningful differences in performance. The distribution of question difficulty levels, namely 9 easy, 11 medium, and 5 hard provided a balanced challenge to assess a comprehensive range of student abilities. This study contributes to authentic assessment design by integrating real-world images to foster higher-order thinking skills and can serve as a benchmark for further research or application.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to examine the effect of experimental-based Problem-Based Learning (PBL) on students’ scientific writing and presentation skills in a Basic Physics course. Methodology: The study employed a quasi-experimental posttest-only control group design involving 73 undergraduate students from the Biology Education program. Participants were divided into an experimental group receiving experimental-based PBL instruction and a control group receiving conventional learning. Data were collected using validated rubrics for scientific writing and scientific presentation skills. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, One-Way ANOVA, and the Mann–Whitney U test. Main Findings: The results show that students in the experimental group achieved significantly higher scientific writing scores (M = 562.97) than those in the control group (M = 518.19), with significant differences across most writing components (p < 0.05). One-Way ANOVA results indicate a very large effect size (Partial Eta Squared = 0.970). In addition, scientific presentation skills were significantly higher in the experimental group across all assessed indicators, including contribution, collaboration, confidence, content mastery, and communication (p = 0.000). Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides empirical evidence that experimental-based PBL effectively enhances both scientific writing and presentation skills in an interdisciplinary Basic Physics learning context. The findings highlight the role of inquiry-oriented and experimental learning in strengthening scientific communication skills and offer practical implications for improving scientific literacy in higher education.

Abstract

Small elementary schools often face serious challenges, particularly in terms of low student enrollment, limited community support, and insufficient teacher capacity to meet curriculum and technological demands. SDN Temenggungan in Banyuwangi is one such school that, at one point, did not receive any new student enrollments. Through a community service program based on a participatory action approach, teachers were supported in designing and implementing student-centered, inquiry-oriented learning strategies (“deep learning” in a pedagogical sense) and introduced to artificial intelligence (AI) as a learning tool through simple digital tools and chat-based applications. The program resulted in a significant increase in new student enrollment, improved teacher competence in lesson design and technology integration, and a positive shift in community perception toward the school. The participatory approach proved effective in fostering teacher engagement and ownership of instructional innovations. These quantitative outcomes substantiate the program’s impact on both pedagogical quality and community trust. Such an initiative can serve as a replicable model for empowering teachers in other elementary schools facing similar challenges in different regions.

Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively analyze the effect of career development coaching on teacher performance through a meta-analysis approach. The research was conducted using a systematic literature review of 10 relevant scientific articles, which were examined to identify key findings related to teacher performance. The selected studies consisted of indexed international journals, accredited national journals, and national publications that met methodological standards. The results of the meta-analysis indicate that career development coaching has a positive and significant effect on teacher performance. Career development programs are proven to enhance professional competence, work motivation, job satisfaction, and the effectiveness of instructional implementation. Several studies also reveal that motivation and job satisfaction function as additional variables that strengthen the relationship between career development and teacher performance. Career development coaching is a strategic factor that consistently contributes to improving teacher performance. Structured, sustainable, and teacher-oriented career development programs are capable of enhancing professionalism and the overall quality of learning.
