Abstract

Abstract    P.hexazonacan be found in the upstream of the Sibam River and in the streams around the Riau University.A study aims to understand the pattern of otolith growth rings has been conducted from July to August 2019.The fish was capture using ascoop net. There were 62 fishes (25 fishes from the upstream of the Sibam River and 37 fishes from the streams in the Riau University). The otoliths (sagita) were removed and manually shaved. Growth  rings pattern was studied using a binocular microscope. The distance between the nucleus and the first dark ring was varied, in the fish  from the upstream of the Sibam River was 0.1-0.24mm and that of the fish from the stream in the Riau University was 0.9-0.24 mm.The maximum number of the dark ring in the otolith was 2. These data shown that the dark rings are formed individually and was not formed by periodic event in the life of the sumatra fish. The  fish from the streams in the Riau University may grow better than the fish that live in the upstream of the Sibam River. Keywords :Dark Ring, Growth Pattern, Sagita, Tiger Fish

Abstract

AbstractSumatran fish (Puntius hexazona)  is a type of freshwater fish that inhabits the waters around the Riau University and the upstream of the Sibam River. A study aims to determine the type of food in the stomach of the fish from both areas was conducted in July – September 2019. Sampling was  carried out 4 times, once/ 2 weeks. The fish was captured using  scoop nets. There were 88 fishes (42 fishes from the upstream of the Sibam River and 46 fishes from the streams in the Riau University), but 4 fishes have  empty stomach and they cannot be analyzed. The type of food present in the stomach of fish from both sampling areas were similar. The main food the fish in from the Riau University’s waters was insecta remains (IP 83%), crustacean remains (12% IP) and plant remains (5% IP). While that of the Sibam River was crustacean remains (IP 91%), insecta remains (IP 5%), and rotifers (IP 4%).  P. hexazona has viliform teeth, short and firm gill rakers and the length of intestine was 1.2 times of total length. Data obtained indicate that  P. hexazona  is an omnivorous fish. Keywords: Main  Food, Omnivorous Fish, Index of Preponderance, Feeding habit

Abstract

ABSTRACT  Trichopsisvittata is one of the freshwater fish that commonly present in Riau, including in the Riau University Dam and the main ditch of the PERUMDAM housing complex. Information on the biological aspects of these fish, including the morphometric, meristic and growth patterns, however, is rare. To understand the morphometric and characteristics of these fish, a study was conducted from October-December 2019. The fish was sampled from 2 locations, namely in the Riau University Dam and in the main ditch of the PERUMDAM housing complex, 4 times, once/ week. There were 200 fishes captured, 100 fishes from the dam and 100 fishes from the ditch. They were 29-54 mm SL and 4.12-5.7 g BW. Twenty six morphological characteristics measured and 11 meristic characteristics were studied. Results shown that the meristic characteristics are as follows D.II.6-8, P.6-8, V.5-10, A.VI-VII.24-28, C.11-13.The number of scales in the dorsal fin was 12-18 in the cheek was 8-9, around the body was 38-40, in the tail basewas 14-16, above the lateral line was 6-8 and below the lateral line was 10-12. There were 3 differences of morphometric characteristics between male and female of Trichopsisvittata. In male, the distances betweenmouthand the base of the pectoral fin, the abdominal fin to the base of the anal fin and the length of the anal fin is longer than those of the female’s. The length-weight relationship of female (b = 0.222) and the male (b = 0.302) was negative allometric. Keywords:freshwater fish, negative allometric, growth patterns, fish morphology

Abstract

In the Siak River, Riau, the water quality in the downstream area is relatively bad due to pollutant originated from several sources such as industrial and domestic wastes. The low quality water may negatively affects the growth of fish and it is reflected in the growth pattern in the otolith of fish living in that river. To understand the growth pattern in the otolith of Pristolepis grooti (Anabantidae)living in that river, a study has been conducted. Totally 25 fishes were captured from the downstream of the Siak River. The otolith were then removed and processed following Windarti (2007) and investigated under a binocular microscope to study the growth ring pattern in the otolith. The number of dark growth ring was counted. Results shown that 2 to 5 dark growth rings, around 0.086 mm thick were present in the otolith of the fish. The presence of the dark growth rings in the otolith indicated that the growth of P. grooti in the downstream of the Siak River was hampered and this fact also suggested that the water quality in the downstream of the Siak River is not sufficient to support the life P. grooti in that area.

Abstract

A laboratory scaled study aims to understand the ability of several fish speciesin reducing the amount of organic materials accumulated around floating cage fishculture has been conducted in the Fishery and Marine Science Faculty, RiauUniversity, Pekanbaru from August to December 2008. Fingerlings (15-20 cm SL) ofNile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were caged (6 fishes/ cage) and each cage was keptin the 25 liter aquarium. Outside the cages, other fishes namely common carp(Cyprinus carpio), Nile tilapia (O. niloticus ) and Catfish (Clarias batracus) werereared, 3 fishes/ aquarium. As controls, Nile tilapia were kept in the cages and therewas no fish out side the floating cage. Fishes were feed on fish pellet, 40% of cagedfish body weight, once/ day. Feed remains that are flown to the outside of the cage.Sediment accumulated was removed once/week for a 3 weeks period, then they werefiltered and dried in the 40o oven and was weighed. The fishes, however, were weightin the 1st day and by the end of the experiment and the feed conversion rate wascalculated. Results indicated that the sediment in the nile-carp aquarium is 1,67 gram; thenile-nile is 1.79 gram, the nile-catfish is 1.54 gram and the control is 2.28 gram. While the FCR of the nile-carp is 1.47; nile-nile is 1.04; nile-catfish is 1.05 andcontrol is 3.16. So, it can be concluded that the presence of fishes outside the cagereduce the amount of sediment accumulated around the cage and increase theefficiency of feed given to the fish.

Abstract

Turmeric is an herbal plant that has antibacterial and antioxidant abilities, and also to improve the fish's immune system. The aim of this research was to look at the histological structure of kidney and survival rate fish which was given feed with turmeric flour before and after infected with A. hydrophila. This research was conducted from February to May 2019 in the Laboratory of Parasites and Fish Diseases of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, University of Riau. The method in this research was the experimental method by one-factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five levels. Kn (feeding without given turmeric flour and without infection with A. hydrophila), Kp (Feeding without given turmeric flour and infected with A. hydrophila), P1 (turmeric flour at a dose of 0.5 g / kg of feed), P2 (dose of 0.7 g / kg), P3 (dose of 0.9 g / kg). The results showed that the histological structure of catfish which was given the addition of turmeric flour in feed by normal conditions and after being challenged with A. hydrophila showed some damage to the gill and kidney structure. The best dose of adding turmeric flour to feed is 0.7 g / kg of feed (P2), seen from the structure of the kidney cell, and the best survival. Histological structure of kidney cell structure in P2 treatment has abnormality such as hemorrhage and survival rate 100%.
