Abstract

Abstract             Rasbora caudimaculata is a type of freshwater fish that inhabits the Tanjung Kudu and the Teluk Petai Lakes, Kampar Regency. A study aims to understand the type of food in the stomach of the fish was conducted in October – January 2021. Samplings were carried out 4 times, once/2 weeks. The fish was caught using nets with mesh size 0.5 inch and 1 inch. There were 321 fishes (169 fishes from the Tanjung Kudu Lake and 152 fishes from the Teluk Petai Lake).  There were 58 fishes with empty stomach and they cannot be analyzed. The analysis of stomach content was conducted using a volumetric method. The stomach content data obtained were used as a basis to calculate the Preponderance Index (PI). The types of food present in the fish’s stomach from both sampling areas were similar. The main food of R. caudimaculata from both   lakes is insects, PI 55% from the Tanjung Kudu Lake and PI 46% from the Teluk Petai Lake. The complementary foods were phytoplankton (Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceaea, Euglenoidea, Trebouxiophyceae, Xanthophyceae dan Zygnematophyceae) and rotifers. R. caudimaculata has viliform teeth and short firm gill rakers. The length of intestine was 1.2 times of total length. Data obtained indicate that R. caudimaculata is an omnivorous fish. Keywords: Oxbow lake, Feeding habit, Omnivorous fish, Preponderance Index

Abstract

Swamp eel is one of the freshwater fish that live in the waters around the Riau Main Stadium. This research aims to understand the growth pattern, feeding habit and to determine the type of food present in the fish’s stomach. This research was carried out in September-October 2020. Sampling was conducted five times, once/week, using a fish rod and bamboo fish trap. There were 52 fishes captured (TL 291-613 mm and weight 30-132 gr). The stomach content was analyzed using a volumetric method and the Preponderance Index (PI) of each type of food was calculated. The length-weight relationship shown that the growth of female, intersex and male was negative allometric (b=2.40 in female, b=1,56 in intersex and b= 2,02 in male). Results showed that the food of M. albus in the waters around the Riau Main Stadium consists of insects (PI 49%), fish remains (PI 32%), mollusc (PI 9%), plants (PI 9%) and unidentified materials (1%). Based on data obtained, this fish categorized.

Abstract

This researct was conducted on September 2015 to April 2016. Fish reproduction is controlled by endocrine system that is affected by external factors such as photoperiod. Changing in photoperiod may affect the gonad development in fish. To understand the effect of different photoperiod in gonad development of O. hypopthalmus, the fishes were reared in fiber tanks (140 x 60 x 40 cm) with water circulation system and completed with aerator. The treatments applied were : natural photoperiod, 24D (continuous dark), 16D8L (16 hours dark and 8 hours light), 12D12L (12 hours dark and 12 hours light), 8D16L (8 hours dark and 16 hours light) and 24L (25 continuous light), and the fish were feed on shrimp and cricket enriched commercial pellet. The fishes were sampled once/month, 4 fishes/sample. Parameters investigated were body length, body weight, gonad development, hepatosomatic index (HSI), viscerosomatic index (VSI) and gonadosomatic index (GSI). Based on the research  results different photoperiod did not affect the gonad development of O. hypopthalmus. There was no special pattern in gonad development in all treatments. The gonads were first developed in 13 – 37 weeks old male and female fishes. The female gonad, however, developed earlier than that of the male. The smallest female with developed gonad was 10.65 cm TL and 5.55 g BW. While that of the male was 16.7 cm TL and 16.7 g BW. During the research there was no mature fish.  The HSI and VSI shown similar patterns, it was increased by the second month (17 weeks old fish) and then decreased. This decrement indicates that the energy stored has been used for gonad development. Based on data obtained it can be concluded that the photoperiod does not affect the gonad development of ompok hyopthalmus.
