Abstract

The Greater Bandung area grapples with various challenges, including spatial planning, waste management, water resources, critical land, and transportation, all of which are intricately linked to sustainability concerns, particularly affecting tourism. To address these issues, it is crucial to understand tourists' preferences for green promotion attributes in destinations. This study employs conjoint analysis to discern tourists' perceptions of various destination attributes. Findings reveal that Greater Bandung tourists prioritize environmentally friendly tourism activities as the most significant destination image attribute, while ecologically friendly transportation ranks as the least important. Additionally, when assessing destination advertising attributes, environmentally friendly visuals hold more importance than environmentally friendly messaging. Tourists prioritize sustainable product packaging, while they consider the destination's tourist product color to be less significant. These findings underscore the importance of clear communication, ecolabeling, and environmentally friendly practices in promoting sustainable tourism in the Greater Bandung area. By understanding tourists' preferences, stakeholders can tailor promotional strategies to effectively convey the destination's green initiatives, thus enhancing its appeal and contributing to sustainable tourism development.

Abstract

Ghost kitchens have emerged as a disruptive force in Indonesia’s urban food economy, driven by digitalization, platform-based business models, and changing consumer behaviour. By eliminating the need for physical storefronts, they enable small entrepreneurs to reduce operational costs and access a broader market through food delivery platforms like GoFood, GrabFood, and ShopeeFood. However, their reliance on these platforms creates new economic dependencies, as algorithm-driven visibility and commission fees significantly impact profitability. Additionally, the rise of ghost kitchens intensifies market competition, particularly between independent operators and corporate-backed cloud kitchens that dominate rankings and resources. This study employs a qualitative multiple-case study approach to examine the economic and regulatory implications of ghost kitchens, including their impact on traditional food vendors, gig workers, and urban policies. Findings reveal that while ghost kitchens increase business accessibility, they also contribute to labour precarity within the gig economy, as food delivery workers face unstable incomes and high operational costs. The study underscores the need for adaptive regulatory frameworks, including fair taxation, food safety measures, and platform accountability to ensure equitable market participation. As ghost kitchens continue to evolve, proactive policies are required to balance innovation with sustainability, ensuring long-term benefits for entrepreneurs, workers, and consumers in Indonesia’s digital food ecosystem.

Abstract

The image of a tourism destination plays a crucial role in attracting visitors and maintaining its competitiveness in the global market. This study examines the interaction between social media and mass media in shaping destination image, highlighting their complementary roles and the challenges in balancing their influence. Social media, characterized by its speed, interactivity, and user-generated content (UGC), provides early exposure to destinations, enabling rapid dissemination of information through viral campaigns, influencer promotions, and traveler reviews. However, it is often criticized for its lack of credibility, susceptibility to misinformation, and exaggerated portrayals. Conversely, mass media offers higher credibility and long-term influence through feature articles, expert testimonials, and structured storytelling, although it lacks social media's immediacy and engagement levels. This study employs a qualitative case study approach, utilizing content analysis of social media and mass media platforms and semi-structured interviews with 20 tourists and five destination managers. Findings indicate that 70% of tourists prefer social media for travel planning, as it provides real-time reviews and visually engaging content, while 30% rely on mass media for more credible and in-depth information. Destination managers adopt different strategies based on the type of tourism they promote; nature-based and urban destinations favor social media for rapid engagement, whereas cultural and historical destinations prioritize mass media for credibility and structured narratives. The Media Balance Model in Building Tourism Destination Image is proposed as a framework for integrating social media’s exposure and mass media’s credibility. The study underscores the importance of a holistic communication strategy, where social media is used for immediate attraction and engagement, while mass media reinforces long-term trust and reputation. As a practical implication, tourism stakeholders are advised to actively monitor online sentiment, manage crisis communication effectively, and collaborate with both media types to create a consistent and sustainable destination image.

Abstract

This study conducts a strategic analysis to optimize public assets for inclusive tourism development in Indonesia. Amid rising global demand for accessible tourism, public assets—such as urban parks, historical landmarks, and coastal areas—offer significant economic, social, and cultural potential. However, poor infrastructure maintenance, weak regulatory enforcement, and fragmented governance hinder their effective utilization. The research applies a weighted SWOT analysis to map strategic priorities by employing a mixed-method approach that integrates expert panel discussions using the Delphi method, field surveys, structured observations, and secondary data analysis. The findings reveal that internal weaknesses and external threats outweigh strengths and opportunities, positioning Indonesia's public asset management in a defensive quadrant (WT strategy). Consequently, strategic recommendations include strengthening governance through enhanced regulatory frameworks and Good Corporate Governance (GCG) principles, leveraging smart tourism technologies, and fostering sustainable public-private partnerships (PPPs). The study concludes that by addressing these challenges through multi-stakeholder collaboration and innovative financing models, Indonesia can transform its public assets into globally competitive, inclusive tourism destinations, contributing to long-term sustainable development.

Abstract

This study explores the financial management behavior of micro-businesses in tourism destinations across West Java, Indonesia. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations of eight micro-entrepreneurs operating in Pangandaran, Lembang, Ciwidey, Ciletuh Geopark, and Puncak. The findings reveal that financial management practices are predominantly informal, with minimal record-keeping, mixing personal and business finances, and reliance on daily cash flow. Low financial literacy, seasonal income fluctuations, and psychological biases such as loss aversion and overconfidence shape these behaviors. Micro-businesses tend to avoid formal financial institutions due to perceived complexity, fear of debt, and limited understanding of financial products, leading to a preference for informal financing sources. The study highlights that these factors weaken financial resilience and hinder business sustainability. Furthermore, limited financial literacy interventions have had minimal impact on changing financial behavior. The research recommends tailored financial literacy programs and access to simplified formal financial services to strengthen micro-business resilience. Addressing knowledge gaps and behavioral tendencies is essential to enhancing financial management practices and supporting micro-enterprises sustainable growth within West Java’s tourism sector.

Abstract

As tourism becomes increasingly experience-driven and sustainability-focused, the role of tour guides has evolved into a strategic touchpoint that shapes visitor perceptions and destination image. This study aims to formulate and prioritize effective strategies for tour guide competency development using an integrated Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and quantitative TOWS matrix approach. A panel of twelve experts representing government, training institutions, and tourism practitioners participated in structured pairwise comparisons and SWOT-based strategy scoring. The AHP results revealed that experiential learning-based training and national certification systems are the most critical and high-impact strategies supported by public-private partnerships and emerging digital tools. Through the TOWS mapping, each strategy was evaluated for its strategic fit within Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT), resulting in a prioritized roadmap for implementation. The study concludes that a tiered, context-sensitive strategy—grounded in institutional collaboration and adaptive learning models—offers a sustainable path to professionalizing the guiding sector. This research provides actionable insights for policymakers, tourism educators, and destination managers seeking to build resilient and skilled human capital in tourism.
