Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of using the guided conversation method on the speaking ability of eleventh-grade students at MAN 2 Bukittinggi. The research was motivated by the observation that students' speaking scores were below the standard, and teaching methods tended to emphasize memorization. Additionally, students struggled with speaking in English and received limited feedback on their performance. This quasi-experimental research involved pre-tests and post-tests with an experimental and control group. The sample consisted of 58 students selected through cluster random sampling, divided equally into two classes. A speaking test was used as the research instrument, and inter-rater reliability was applied to ensure test consistency. Data analysis included normality and homogeneity tests, while hypothesis testing employed paired sample T-tests and independent sample T-tests using SPSS. The results showed a significant improvement in the speaking ability of students taught using the guided conversation method (Sig. < 0.05). Moreover, a comparison between the experimental and control groups revealed a significant difference, with the experimental group achieving higher post-test scores. Thus, it can be concluded that the guided conversation method effectively improves students' speaking ability.

Abstract

This study was motivated by several problems, such as the mismatch between the test questions and the material learned, unclear question instructions, and the lack of statistical analysis by English teachers. The main objective of this study was to identify the quality of English midterm test items for grade 7th students at SMPN 7 Bukittinggi, focusing on Validity, Reliability, difficulty level, Discrimination Power, and Distractor Effectiveness. The research method used was Quantitative Descriptive, with data collection through student answer sheets and analysis using various statistical formulas, including Point Biserial Correlation for validity, Spearman-Brown for reliability, and Narsya's formula for difficulty level and differentiating power, as well as Djumingin's formula for effectiveness. The results showed that most of the items were valid, and reliable, had a moderate difficulty level, and had good discriminating power, with only a few items showing minor problems. Overall, the English midterm exam items were considered good quality.

Abstract

This study was conducted to address the issues observed in SMPN 30 Sijunjung. The identified issues were students' tendency to complan. when the teacher did not provide further explanation in Bahasa during audio activities, difficulty in comprehending native speakers due to their fast pace, lack of focus during video or movie-based listening activities, and confusion regarding certain vocabulary. The aim of this research is to compare the effectiveness of using video and audio as media in students' listening comprehension.A quantitative research approach was utilized in this study. The design was comparative with VIII.1 and VIII.2 as the sample classes, each taught using either video or audio. The data was collected through a listening test.Based on the data gathered from the eighth grade students of SMPN 30 Sijunjung, it was concluded that there is no significant difference in the overall scores of students' listening comprehension when using video or audio. However, the findings showed variations in specific listening skills, with the video group performing better in distinguishing sounds and the audio group excelling in decoding verbal messages. Additionally, both groups had similar levels of ability in perceiving and retaining the entire message. These results suggest that both video and audio can equally facilitate students' listening comprehension.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine how Sumatera Thawalib Islamic Boarding School Parabek students' reading comprehension of descriptive texts was affected by the Engage-Study-Activate (ESA) strategy. The study discovered issues like When the teacher asks the class to share their thoughts in English, the students' first intention is to remain silent. Second, a lack of vocabulary prevents pupils from understanding the material. Thirdly, reading comprehension levels among students are subpar. Finally, when teachers employ traditional techniques like teacher-centered learning strategies, children get less attention. A quantitative methodology using a quasi-experimental design was used in the research, with 29 students in the experimental class (1.5) and 31 students in the control class (1.6). A multiple-choice test was employed as the research instrument to gauge gains in reading comprehension. Data analysis was done with SPSS 26. Results showed that, when compared to conventional approaches, the ESA method considerably increased reading comprehension scores, as shown by a p-value less than 0.05. The conclusion, it was found that the ESA method was a more successful teaching strategy that significantly improved student comprehension and engagement. In conclusion, students’ reading comprehension in Sumatera Thawalib Parabek is significantly improved by the ESA approach as compared to traditional ways.

Abstract

Conducting a need analysis is crucial for tailoring academic writing instruction to meet the students’ need. Need analysis serve as systematic tool  for developing relevant learning materials that align with students’ learning needs. This research hold significant importance in adressing the integration of project-based learning (PjBL) and blended learning within the context of academic writing. By identifying the needs of students, it provides valuable insight for culliculum designers and educators in English education program.  The research aims to identify the students' need for project-based learning with blended learning in academic writing. This study is conducted as survey research at the English education study program at Muhammadiyah University of Mataram and Mandalika University of Education. The questionnaire of collecting data consists of 61 statements with 11 factors. The result of the research shows that all of the students need eleven factors such as learning objectives, topic needs, teaching material requirements, needs assessment, the need of PJBL syntax, blended learning, social system need, requirement principle of reaction, need of support system, learning impact need, and need for impact accompanying learning. The results of this research are expected contributing to the lecturers, stakeholders, and curriculum development of project-based blended learning in academic writiting at the English Education department.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui persepsi mahasiswa terhadap penggunaan Grammarly checker untuk keakurasian penulisan di Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh beberapa masalah yang berkaitan dengan akurasi penulisan. Masalah pertama adalah mahasiswa membuat kesalahan pengejaan kosa kata pada writing mereka. Masalah kedua yang ditemui adalah grammatical error (kesalahan pada tata Bahasa). Masalah yang terakhir yaitu kesalahan mahasiswa pada penggunaan tanda baca pada writing mereka. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan persepsi mahasiswa terhadap fungsi dan kepraktisan Grammarly Checker untuk keakuratan penulisan. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian survei. Peneliti mengumpulkan data dengan menggunakan kuesioner. Indikator instrument yang digunakan pada penelitian ini yaitu correcting word usage, correcting sentence structure, correcting punctuation and spelling usage, the procedure of using the tools and time usage. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester enam di Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Peneliti menggunakan teknik random sampling untuk menentukan sampel. Sampel penelitian ini berjumlah 33 mahasiswa pada tahun akademik 2019/2020. Untuk menganalisis data, peneliti menghitung persentase dari setiap pernyataan yang diberikan oleh mahasiswa, mencari tahu mean dari setiap sub variabel dan membuat kesimpulan dengan tingkat penilaian kualitas.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa persepsi mahasiswa terhadap penggunaan Grammarly checker untuk ketepatan penulisan di semester enam pada Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek tahun akademik 2019/2020 Bukittinggi berada pada tingkat kualitas yang sangat baik. Peneliti menemukan bahwa persepsi mahasiswa terhadap penggunaan Grammarly checker untuk ketepatan penulisan di semester enam Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi adalah 80,81% berdasarkan tabel interpretasi 80% - 100%. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa mahasiswa semester enam Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi merasa puas dengan penggunaan Grammarly checker untuk ketepatan penulisan di semester enam Program Studi Bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the level of jab accuracy of fencers in Banda Aceh. Eight fencers in Banda Aceh were included in the study and asked to perform 20 jabs in a controlled trial. The jab accuracy was calculated based on the number of jabs that successfully hit the target. The results showed significant variation in the jab accuracy of the athletes. Two athletes (25%) managed to achieve an accuracy level between 80% and 100% and were categorized as Very Good. Two other athletes (25%) were in the Good category with an accuracy of 70%-79%, while two other athletes (25%) were in the Fair category (60%-69%). In addition, one athlete (12.5%) had a jab accuracy between 50% and 59% and was included in the Poor category, while one other athlete (12.5%) was in the Very Poor category with an accuracy of 40%-49%. The overall average jab accuracy was 70.63% with a standard deviation of 14.61%, indicating variation in the athletes' performance. Based on these results, it is recommended to provide more intensive training and focus on improving the technique, concentration, and physical condition of athletes to achieve more optimal performance in the future.

Abstract

Desa merupakan kesatuan masyarakat terkecil dalam wilayah Negara Kesatuan republik Indonesia . Dalam hal ini desa terbentuk dari komponen yang terdiri dari wilayah desa,masyarakat desa dan pemerintah desa. Ketiga komponen tersebut saling berkaitan dalam proses pencapaian tujuan negara dan masyarakat desa terutama dalam masalah pemerintah desa dalam pelaksanaan tugasnya sehari-hari. Tujuan dari penyuluhan hukum ini adalah untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan pemerintah desa tentang aturan yang mengatur tentang desa atau arti pentingnya peraturan perundang-undangan dalam prateknya dilapangan. Sedangkan manfaat yang diharapkan dalam penyuluhan ini adalah untuk memberikan masukan kepada pemerintah desa dalam pelaksanaan tugas, kewajiban hak dan kewenangan yang dimiliki oleh pemerintah desa dan juga menambah pengetahuan serta pemahaman bagi masyarakat dan aparatur pemerintah desa mengenai aturan yang berlaku dan prateknya. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan di Desa Pandan Lagan Kecamatan Geragai Kabupaten Tanjung Jabung Timuri, pada hari Selasa tanggal 30 Juli 2019, Jam 09.00 – 13.00. di Ruang Aula Kantor Desa Pandan Lagan Kecamatan Geragai Kabupaten Tanjung Jabung Timuri,, dengan metode yang dilakukan adalah ceramah, diskusi dan tanya jawab. Dalam penyuluhan hukum ini tanggapan pemerintah desa, BPD dan masyarakat sangat positif terbukti dari banyaknya pertanyaan yang diajukan kepada tim pengabdian. Baik mengenai tugas, kewenangan ataupun tentang pendapatan desa. Dengan harapan bahwa pemerintah desa dapat memahami tentang arti pentingnya peraturan dan bagaimana pelaksanaannya dalam pemerintahan desa.

Abstract

This Community Service Program was carried out in Danau Kedap Village, Maro Sebo Subdistrict, Muaro Jambi Regency, focusing on the importance of digitalization in village governance. Village governance involves the collaboration of the village area, its community, and the local government. This program aimed to increase the village government's understanding of how digitalization can improve administrative efficiency, transparency, and accountability. The goal was to provide legal counseling to enhance the knowledge of village officials on the role of digitalization in governance, and to explore solutions to challenges in daily governance tasks. The methods included lectures, discussions, and question-and-answer sessions to encourage active participation. The expected outcome is to improve the village government's administrative competence and service delivery. This initiative aims to promote the adoption of digital tools in governance processes, ultimately making village administration more efficient, transparent, and modern. The contributions of this project are significant in enhancing governance practices in the village, providing a model for other regions to follow.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan eclectic methid terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa MTsN 6 Agam. Penelitian ini dilakukan karena adanya beberapa masalah yang berkaitan dengan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Pertama, para siswa tidak dapat berbicara bahasa Inggris dengan lancar. Kedua, siswa tidak dapat berbicara bahasa Inggris dengan akurat. Ketiga, guru tidak mempraktikkan berbagai metode. Untuk mengatasi masalah ini, peneliti telah menerapkan eclectic method dalam pengajaran Bahasa Inggris keterampilan berbicara. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian eksperimen. Peneliti menggunakan desain kuasi-eksperimen dengan membandingkan dua kelas. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII MTsN 6 Agam. Sebanyak 29 siswa di kelas VIII.3 dijadikan sampel penelitian kelas eksperimen, dan 30 siswa di kelas VIII.5 dikelompokkan sebagai kelas control. Untuk menentukan sampel, peneliti menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Instrumen penelitian ini adalah tes lisan. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan statistik deskriptif dan statistik inferensial. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap pencapaian kemampuan berbicara siswa antara siswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan eclectic method dan tanpa menggunakan metode eklektik. Hal ini terlihat dari p-value yang lebih kecil dari nilai alpha (0,000<0,05). Dapat disimpulkan bahwa, penggunaan eclectic method berpengaruh signifikan terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa.
