Abstract

This study examines the role of Quizizz Paper Mode an offline, printable adaptation of the gamified Quizizz platform in enhancing fifth-grade students’ engagement and motivation in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning at SDN 5 Arawa, a low-resource public elementary school in rural South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Amid persistent challenges of low participation and motivation in conventional paper-based EFL instruction, particularly in technology-limited settings, the research investigates whether this low-tech gamified tool can foster more interactive and motivating classroom experiences. Adopting a descriptive qualitative design, the study collected data through structured classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with five purposively selected fifth-grade students and their English teacher. Observations focused on three dimensions of engagement behavioral, emotional, and cognitive alongside indicators of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Interview responses provided in-depth insights into participants’ perceptions and experiences. Data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña’s (2014) interactive model, with triangulation ensuring credibility. Findings revealed that Quizizz Paper Mode significantly improved all aspects of student engagement. Students exhibited greater behavioral participation and persistence, heightened emotional enthusiasm, enjoyment, and confidence, and stronger cognitive focus, effortful thinking, and strategy use. Both intrinsic motivation (interest, curiosity, and enjoyment) and extrinsic motivation (competition, scoring, and achievement orientation) increased markedly due to the tool’s game-like elements such as time limits, immediate feedback, and ranking systems. Participants and the teacher perceived the activity as more enjoyable and less anxiety-inducing than traditional assessments. The tool proved highly practical and inclusive in low-resource classrooms, requiring no internet access or personal digital devices. This research concludes that Quizizz Paper Mode is an effective, accessible, and equitable strategy for boosting engagement and motivation in primary EFL learning within resource-constrained contexts. Practical implications for teachers and recommendations for future studies are discussed.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of word puzzles as an innovative teaching medium in improving seventh-grade students’ vocabulary mastery at SMP Muhammadiyah Pangsid, Indonesia. The research was driven by the students’ persistently low vocabulary proficiency, which stemmed from conventional, teacher-centered methods that lacked engagement and failed to promote active learning. Employing a quantitative pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach, the study involved 21 seventh-grade students selected through total sampling. Vocabulary mastery was assessed using a 50-item test consisting of 10 multiple-choice items and 40 word puzzle items covering syllabus-based topics (animals, school objects, occupations, parts of the body, and daily activities). Data collected from pretest and posttest were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, given the non-normal distribution of the data. The findings demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery after the intervention. The mean score rose substantially from 16.33 in the pretest to 72.62 in the posttest. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test produced a significance value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis. These results confirm that word puzzles effectively enhance vocabulary acquisition by increasing student motivation, participation, and retention in an EFL context. The study recommends the integration of word puzzles as a practical, low-cost, and engaging alternative to traditional vocabulary instruction, particularly in junior high schools with limited resources.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relation between students’ frequency of watching English content on social media and their vocabulary mastery in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, this research involved 16 eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Sidrap. Data were collected through a vocabulary test and structured interviews. The vocabulary test was used to provide a preliminary description of students’ vocabulary levels, while interviews explored students’ exposure to English content, viewing frequency, and learning experiences outside the classroom. The findings reveal that students who frequently engage with English content on social media platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram demonstrate higher levels of vocabulary mastery compared to those with lower exposure. The frequency of engagement ranged from daily to occasional viewing, with content types including both educational and entertainment materials. Repeated exposure to authentic and contextualized language input was found to contribute significantly to vocabulary acquisition. Furthermore, the study indicates that social media serves as an effective informal learning environment that supports autonomous learning and enhances students’ vocabulary development. These findings suggest that integrating social media-based exposure into language learning strategies can be beneficial in improving students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the improvement of students’ writing skills through the picture-based dictation method and to explore students’ responses to this method. The main issue addressed is students’ difficulties in composing descriptive texts. This study employs a quantitative approach with an experimental design applied to eighth-grade students, A class. aThe results indicate a significant improvement in students’ writing skills, with an average score increase of 18.78 (from 69.22 to 88.00). Based on the Paired Sample T-test, the calculated t-value (6.302) is greater than the critical t-value (2.056), indicating that this method significantly improves students’ writing in terms of content, grammar, vocabulary, and organization. Students’ responses to this method were highly positive, with an acceptance rate of 96.34%. The integration of audio and visual elements proved to facilitate students in generating ideas and boost their confidence in writing English. It can be concluded that the picture-based dictation method is an effective creative approach to improving students’ learning outcomes and motivation.

Abstract

This study examines collaborative governance-based nickel resource management in nickel industrial areas in Indonesia. Nickel is positioned as a strategic commodity in downstreaming, the energy transition, and the electric vehicle supply chain. However, its management faces challenges related to data transparency, inter-agency coordination, licensing accountability, environmental monitoring, and public participation. Using a qualitative approach through document study, this research analyzes regulations, government reports, scholarly articles, and official sources related to nickel governance. The findings indicate that nickel management involves the central government, local governments, industry actors, investors, local communities, academics, and supervisory institutions; however, the relationships among these stakeholders remain largely hierarchical. The proposed model emphasizes area-based collaborative forums, data integration and supply chain traceability, area-based socio-environmental monitoring, meaningful community participation, and equitable benefit sharing. Collaborative governance is therefore necessary to ensure that nickel downstreaming generates not only economic value but also inclusive, accountable, and responsive social and ecological sustainability for producing regions, workers, communities, and future generations.

Abstract

This study examines conflict and governance in the establishment of houses of worship in Sungai Keledang Urban Village, Samarinda City, using a document-based normative juridical approach. The analysis draws on demographic data, urban village monographs, the provisions of the Joint Regulation of the Minister of Religious Affairs and the Minister of Home Affairs Numbers 9 and 8 of 2006, local news reports, and documents related to institutional recommendations, community support, Building Approval, and mediation processes. The findings indicate that the conflict surrounding the establishment of the Toraja Church, El Shaddai Congregation, was not merely driven by religious differences, but was also shaped by issues of document verification, public communication, residents’ trust, and legal certainty in administrative procedures. Population density, the large number of neighbourhood units, and the uneven distribution of worship facilities further underscore the need for transparent, inclusive, and evidence-based governance. This study argues that conflict resolution should be pursued through document clarification, community deliberation, local government facilitation, and impartial mediation to ensure the protection of the right to worship while maintaining social harmony.

Abstract

This study investigated the influence of English songs on students’ pronunciation skills at UPT SMP Negeri 3 Pangsid. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test control-group design was employed. The participants were 27 seventh-grade students, consisting of 15 students in the experimental group and 12 students in the control group. The experimental group received pronunciation instruction through the English children’s song “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” whereas the control group was taught through conventional classroom activities. Data were collected using a pronunciation test assessing articulation, word stress, rhythm, and intonation. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, Shapiro–Wilk normality testing, Levene’s homogeneity testing, and an independent-samples t-test. The experimental group’s mean score increased from 42.33 in the pre-test to 72.00 in the post-test, while the control group increased only from 51.67 to 53.33. The post-test difference was statistically significant, t(25) = 3.784, p < .001, with a mean difference of 18.667. These findings demonstrate that English songs significantly improve junior high school students’ pronunciation by providing repeated, meaningful, and enjoyable exposure to English sounds and prosodic patterns. English songs are therefore recommended as an engaging instructional medium for pronunciation practice.

Abstract

This study explored students’ perceptions of English learning at SMAN 1 Sidrap and examined how those perceptions shaped their English-speaking confidence. A qualitative descriptive design was employed. Thirteen eleventh-grade students were selected through purposive sampling because they had participated in varied classroom speaking activities and represented different confidence levels. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observation, supported by a speaking-confidence scale, and were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña: data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. Trustworthiness was established through credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. The findings showed that most students perceived English as useful for further study, employment, and international communication. Discussions, presentations, role plays, speeches, drama, and group work were viewed as meaningful opportunities to practice English and strengthen confidence. Positive feedback from teachers, peer encouragement, and a non-threatening classroom atmosphere increased students’ willingness to communicate and classroom participation. Nevertheless, anxiety, fear of mistakes, limited vocabulary, and pronunciation difficulties still reduced confidence among some students. The study concludes that positive perceptions of English learning support higher speaking confidence by increasing motivation, lowering the affective filter, and strengthening students’ beliefs in their own ability. Teachers should therefore design interactive, supportive, and progressively challenging speaking activities.
