Abstract

This study is motivated by the crucial role of language in the learning process, particularly the use of directive speech acts by teachers in teaching biographical texts. The limited variation in the use of directive speech acts, which tend to be direct and instructional, may affect students’ engagement and motivation during learning activities. Therefore, this study aims to (1) identify and describe the forms of directive speech acts used by the teacher, and (2) examine the speaking strategies applied in teaching biographical texts in a tenth-grade class at SMAN 1 Kamang Magek. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The data consist of the teacher’s utterances during the learning process, collected through recording and note-taking techniques. The findings reveal that there are five forms of directive speech acts used by the teacher, namely commanding, requesting, suggesting, demanding, and challenging, with commanding as the dominant form. In addition, several speaking strategies were identified, including bald on-record strategy, positive politeness, negative politeness, off-record strategy, and speaking in silence, with the bald on-record strategy being the most dominant. These findings indicate that the teacher’s speech practices are still predominantly oriented toward direct instruction. Therefore, it is necessary to develop more varied, communicative, and persuasive speaking strategies to enhance students’ active engagement and foster reflective thinking in learning biographical texts.

Abstract

Abstract

The implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka in Indonesian language learning is crucial for enhancing students’ literacy and critical thinking skills, yet studies that specifically examine the alignment of planning, implementation, and assessment in teaching Observation Report (Laporan Hasil Observasi, LHO) texts at the junior secondary level remain limited. This study aimed to analyze the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka in teaching LHO texts to Grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 4 Gunung Talang. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed, involving two Grade VIII Indonesian language teachers, the vice-principal for curriculum, and the principal, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis of lesson plans and instructional materials, and were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which comprises data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka has been carried out well in terms of lesson planning, instructional practices, and assessment. Teachers have developed learning documents in the form of Learning Outcomes, Learning Objectives, Learning Objectives Sequences, and teaching modules in accordance with Kurikulum Merdeka guidelines. Instructional activities were conducted through group discussions and LHO text writing projects, although differences in student engagement levels were observed across classes. Assessment practices have included diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments; however, the documentation of diagnostic assessment and the provision of formative feedback still need to be strengthened. These findings deepen understanding of Kurikulum Merdeka implementation in Indonesian language instruction of LHO texts and provide a basis for reinforcing differentiated teaching practices and continuous assessment at the junior secondary school level.

Abstract

The ability to write news texts is one of the essential competencies that junior high school students must master in Indonesian language learning. However, many students still experience difficulties in developing news elements, organizing news structures, and applying appropriate language conventions. This study aimed to examine the effect of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) assisted by audio-visual media and learning motivation on students’ news-writing skills. The research employed a quasi-experimental method using a nonequivalent control group design. The participants were seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Sijunjung, consisting of an experimental class taught through PBL assisted by audio-visual media and a control class taught using conventional instruction. Data were collected through news-writing performance tests and learning motivation questionnaires. The data were analyzed using independent sample t-tests and two-way ANOVA. The findings revealed that students who learned through PBL assisted by audio-visual media achieved better news-writing skills than those who received conventional instruction. Students with high learning motivation demonstrated higher achievement than students with low motivation. Furthermore, a significant interaction was found between the learning model and learning motivation in influencing students’ news-writing skills. These findings suggest that integrating PBL with audio-visual media can serve as an effective instructional strategy for improving students’ news-writing skills, particularly when supported by strong learning motivation.

Abstract

Project-Based Learning (PBL) has gained substantial empirical support as an instructional model capable of fostering student engagement, higher-order thinking, and authentic communicative competence, yet its systematic adoption in Bahasa Indonesia instruction at the senior secondary level remains limited. This study conducted a comprehensive needs analysis to map the conditions, gaps, and stakeholder requirements preceding PBL implementation in Bahasa Indonesia classrooms at SMA Pembangunan Padang, West Sumatera, Indonesia. Employing a qualitative descriptive design with a needs analysis framework, data were collected from three Bahasa Indonesia teachers, sixty students from Grades X and XI, and one school principal through in-depth interviews, unstructured classroom observation, a needs analysis questionnaire, and a focus group discussion. Data analysis followed Miles et al.'s interactive model, with trustworthiness established through source and method triangulation. Findings reveal four interconnected dimensions of need: teachers require subject-specific PBL implementation guidance and sustained professional development; students demonstrate strong preferences for contextual, collaborative, and product-oriented learning experiences; the school's infrastructure provides an adequate but improvable baseline; and the existing assessment system is structurally misaligned with the holistic evaluation demands of PBL. These findings collectively indicate that PBL adoption at SMA Pembangunan Padang is motivationally feasible but requires coordinated reform across pedagogy, assessment design, and institutional support. The study contributes a multi-dimensional needs analysis framework applicable to Bahasa Indonesia instruction within the Merdeka Curriculum context.
