Abstract

Translatability and untranslatability have been significant issues in song translation, particularly regarding figurative expressions. The present study aims to investigate the translatability and untranslatability of figurative language found in the song lyric “How Far I’ll Go” and its translated version, “Seb’rapa Jauh Ku Melangkah”. It also examines the translation techniques employed by the translator to address these issues. This qualitative study was conducted in the light of Kennedy’s (1979) classification of figurative language and the application of Molina & Albir’s (2002) translation techniques.  The finding of the study revealed two types of figurative language translation: translatability and untranslatability. Translatability was found in the translation of personification and hyperbole, while untranslatability was found in the translation of lyrics featuring alliteration, symbolism, and assonance. To address these translation challenges, the translator employs several techniques: particularization, amplification, and reduction were used to translate the personification and hyperbole.  In contrast, amplification and particularization were applied to tackle the untranslatability present in alliteration, symbolism, and assonance. The untranslatability issue arises due to several factors: linguistic and cultural untranslatability, that can result in meanings from the source language being not equivalent or are unknown in the target language. To address untranslatability, the translator often needs to make creative decisions to capture the core meaning and message of the source text while considering the linguistics, cultural, and stylistic context of the target text. Song translation is a complex process that involves more than just the ability to transfer meaning, but also creativity and cultural sensitivity.

Abstract

This paper discusses the relationship between the language and power in the presidential speech text, which is projected through linguistic features, especially modalities. The data was obtained from a speech delivered by President Joko Widodo during the plenary session of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) for the inauguration of the elected president for the 2019-2024 period and the delivery of the president's vision for Indonesia better. Analysis of this paper from linguistic modalities uses a three-dimensional model of Fairclough's critical discourse (CDA) analysis to answer its research questions. The results show that Jokowi used several linguistic modal verbs in projecting his strength. Based on the modality's context, it can be understood that the president conveyed his strategic desire to be himself when he tried to connect with the audience and build his image, audience, and relationship. The President produces a discourse that embodies assumptions about his leadership and audience's social relationship and affirms his legal authority as president and his power. Through the language used, Jokowi creates, maintains, and explains power he holds in these forums.

Abstract

This study investigates how spatial and temporal deixis shape readers’ understanding of Ronya Othmann’s Die Sommer (2020), a novel alternating between German and Kurdish settings and perspectives. A qualitative analysis of deictic expressions identifies forms of spatial deixis (e.g., specific place names; vertical references like “sits on the floor” vs. “starry sky above”; and dynamic movements) and temporal deixis (e.g., historical years, seasonal markers, tense shifts, and temporal adverbs). Results show spatial deixis anchors Leyla’s story in intercultural spaces, guiding reader orientation and evoking her bicultural identity amid historical conflict. Temporal deixis places events in the general political and historical context, linking personal biography to collective memory. This study presents deixis as a narrative device that enables deeper reader involvement in a transcultural storyworld. By integrating Bühler’s and Ehlich’s deixis theories with narrative analysis, it contributes to understanding narrative structure, complex intercultural dynamics, and multiple cultural perspectives in contemporary transcultural literature and narratives.

Abstract

Writing scientific articles presents considerable challenges for many graduate students, often due to insufficient support and resources. As academic publishing is crucial for scholarly development, understanding the obstacles students face is essential for providing effective interventions. This qualitative study employed a phenomenological approach to explore the experiences of ten graduate students from diverse academic disciplines and semesters. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, preceded by an e-reflection exercise completed by each participant. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to examine the data, following steps such as identifying significant themes, interpreting their meaning, and synthesizing the findings. The analysis revealed three primary challenges in scientific writing: difficulty selecting a topic, poor time management, and limited academic writing proficiency. To overcome these issues, students engaged in peer discussions, developed task lists, and participated in scientific writing training programs. These findings highlight the need for structured writing support within graduate programs. Institutions should consider implementing targeted interventions, such as peer writing groups and academic writing workshops, to enhance students’ writing competence and confidence. Graduate students encounter multifaceted challenges in scientific article writing. However, through collaborative strategies and institutional support, these obstacles can be effectively mitigated. Future research should further investigate scalable academic writing interventions to support student success.
