Abstract

Extensive research has been conducted on environmental integration within textbooks linguistically, visually, or statistically. However, comparative analysis involving examining multiple language textbooks has been relatively underutilized in the existing body of research. This study seeks to address this gap by employing a comparative approach to evaluate environmental discourse in two foreign language textbooks, Bahasa Inggris (English) and Kontakte Deutsch 3 (German). Using Eco-Critical Discourse Analysis (ECDA), this research uncovered the ecological integration and ideological underpinnings present in each textbook. The analysis indicates that Bahasa Inggris contains 87% eco-beneficial discourse, with 8% eco-ambivalent and 6% eco-destructive content, suggesting a solid emphasis on positive environmental messaging. In contrast, Kontakte Deutsch 3 exhibits 95% eco-beneficial discourse, no eco-ambivalent content, and only 5% eco-destructive discourse, reflecting a clearer commitment to positive ecological messaging. Further, Kontakte Deutsch 3 emphasizes ecological sensitivity (97%) more than Bahasa Inggris (73%). However, Bahasa Inggris offers more content on ecological knowledge (15%) and skills (13%) compared to Kontakte Deutsch 3 (1.5% each). Both types minimally address ecological distribution, Bahasa Inggris, including original representation (0.6%), and Kontakte Deutsch 3 neglect it. Overall, Kontakte Deutsch 3 presents a more pronounced focus on positive environmental content and emotional awareness, while Bahasa Inggris provides broader ecological knowledge and practical skills.

Abstract

The present study was conducted to find out Indonesian English as a Second/Foreign Language (L2) learners' attitudes towards cheating (AtC) in online English classes, as well as the possible influence of the combination of three variables, which are their AtC, absenteeism, and gender, on their L2 achievement as measured with their final grades. The study employed a survey method and was conducted by distributing an online questionnaire. In total, 164 Indonesian learners from various non-English departments at a university in Java participated in the study. Through descriptive statistics, it was found that generally learners reported their negative AtC in English class, suggesting disapproval towards cheating. Through multiple regression analysis, the study further found that the combination of learners AtC, absenteeism, and gender significantly influenced their L2 achievement, and the overall model could predict 34.5% of the total variance in L2 achievement. However, based on the beta coefficient of the three variables, only learners absenteeism and gender significantly affected their L2 achievement. As learners had higher absenteeism, they obtained lower L2 achievement. From a t-test analysis, female learners were found to have significantly better L2 achievement than their male counterparts. While the findings on the influence of absenteeism on L2 achievement generally conformed to literature in the field, the findings on the influence of AtC and gender on L2 achievement may suggest that further explorations may be necessary.

Abstract

This article is an introduction to the basic concept of using the modality ofk nnen 'can' in German sentences. The k nnen unit of modality functions to revealthe speaker's attitude and has the status of a verb modifier. Modality is divided infunction by some linguists into different areas like epistemic modality, modalitymarkingadverb, and deciderative and optative mode devices. On the basis of the results of a study conducted, it could be concluded thatthe modality unit of kí¶nnen 'can' in a sentence in German has the characteristics asfollows: (1) it is merely an attributive element in a verb phrase rather than a coreone so that if deleted the sentence remains grammatical, (2) its relation to any otherelement is loose in nature, and (3) its position is so firm that it cannot be permutatedwith any other element in a sentence. In addition, in sentences the kí¶nnen modalityvaries in meaning according to sentence context. The meaning expressed by thekí¶nnen modality can be of possibility, ability, or permission. Keywords: the kí¶nnen modality

Abstract

Abstract: Amid the global shift toward digital education, the professional growth of teachers is increasingly shaped by their ability to integrate technology into pedagogical practice. However, Arabic language teachers often face systemic barriers in accessing relevant and effective technology-driven professional development. This conceptual paper investigates the underexplored intersection between educational technology and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Arabic language educators, particularly in the context of Indonesia. Drawing on Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), Professional Competence Theory, and Andragogy, the study proposes a contextualized CPD framework that addresses the unique instructional demands of Arabic teaching. It critically analyzes current limitations in teacher training such as low digital literacy, limited subject-specific support, and a mismatch between CPD content and classroom realities. Moreover, the paper underscores the scarcity of scholarly attention to Arabic teacher development in the broader discourse on technology-enhanced learning. By bridging theory and practice, this article contributes a model for inclusive and sustainable CPD that empowers Arabic teachers to design more engaging and culturally relevant learning experiences. The proposed framework has implications for educational policy, curriculum design, and future empirical research in multilingual and digitally evolving contexts.

Abstract

Background:  Media tend to portray state-owned scholarships and can influence public opinion in a positive, negative, or neutral way. However, the specific depiction of the LPDP scholarship, a prominent state-owned scholarship in Indonesia, requires closer examination. The image of the LPDP scholarship can be analyzed through the collocation of keywords related to LPDP and LPDP scholarships found in the CNN Indonesia news data corpus. The role of the media in forming a positive or negative image is then critically examined through critical discourse analysis. Methodology:  The method used in this study is critical discourse analysis using corpus tools. The data used are 77 news about LPDP Scholarships with a total of 26,335 tokens. The news text was analyzed with the help of a corpus tool in the form of the AntConc application to obtain word frequencies, collocations, and concordances. Findings:  The image of the LPDP Scholarship in CNN Indonesia news is first seen from the frequency of words that appear and are significant, meaning that CNN Indonesia tends to be specific in reporting the LPDP Scholarship by directly referring to the program it has. Second, the emergence of collocation tends to focus on news about the LPDP Scholarship even though there was one negative image related to the problems that occurred in 2020. Third, the emergence of concordance gives the meaning that CNN Indonesia tends to provide a positive image of news about the LPDP Scholarship. Conclusion:  The results of the study show that the frequency of words, collocations, and concordances that appear mean that the CNN Indonesia news media in reporting the LPDP Scholarship predominantly provides a positive image. The media tends to report specifically about the LPDP Scholarship, such as the registration and funding schemes. On the one hand, the media is neutral in reporting. This can be seen from how the media also portrays the conflict that occurred in the LPDP Scholarship, especially regarding the policies implemented. Originality:  This study uses LPDP news in 2014-2024 released by CNN Indonesia to determine the image of LPDP scholarships based on word frequency, collocation, and concordance.

Abstract

Translatability and untranslatability have been significant issues in song translation, particularly regarding figurative expressions. The present study aims to investigate the translatability and untranslatability of figurative language found in the song lyric “How Far I’ll Go” and its translated version, “Seb’rapa Jauh Ku Melangkah”. It also examines the translation techniques employed by the translator to address these issues. This qualitative study was conducted in the light of Kennedy’s (1979) classification of figurative language and the application of Molina & Albir’s (2002) translation techniques.  The finding of the study revealed two types of figurative language translation: translatability and untranslatability. Translatability was found in the translation of personification and hyperbole, while untranslatability was found in the translation of lyrics featuring alliteration, symbolism, and assonance. To address these translation challenges, the translator employs several techniques: particularization, amplification, and reduction were used to translate the personification and hyperbole.  In contrast, amplification and particularization were applied to tackle the untranslatability present in alliteration, symbolism, and assonance. The untranslatability issue arises due to several factors: linguistic and cultural untranslatability, that can result in meanings from the source language being not equivalent or are unknown in the target language. To address untranslatability, the translator often needs to make creative decisions to capture the core meaning and message of the source text while considering the linguistics, cultural, and stylistic context of the target text. Song translation is a complex process that involves more than just the ability to transfer meaning, but also creativity and cultural sensitivity.

Abstract

This paper discusses the relationship between the language and power in the presidential speech text, which is projected through linguistic features, especially modalities. The data was obtained from a speech delivered by President Joko Widodo during the plenary session of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) for the inauguration of the elected president for the 2019-2024 period and the delivery of the president's vision for Indonesia better. Analysis of this paper from linguistic modalities uses a three-dimensional model of Fairclough's critical discourse (CDA) analysis to answer its research questions. The results show that Jokowi used several linguistic modal verbs in projecting his strength. Based on the modality's context, it can be understood that the president conveyed his strategic desire to be himself when he tried to connect with the audience and build his image, audience, and relationship. The President produces a discourse that embodies assumptions about his leadership and audience's social relationship and affirms his legal authority as president and his power. Through the language used, Jokowi creates, maintains, and explains power he holds in these forums.
