Abstract

ABSTRACT The increase in the global elderly population increases the risk of sarkopenia, which can reduce activity capacity. Vitamin D deficiency is common in the elderly and plays an important role in musculoskeletal function. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D levels and the incidence of sarcopenia in the elderly. This cross-sectional study with a total sampling method involved 93 elderly people aged ≥ 60 years who lived at the Bina Bhakti Nursing Home. Measurements were made on serum vitamin D levels, mid upper arm circumference and calf circumference. Spearman correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between these variables. The results showed that the mean mid upper arm circumference was 23.61 cm (SD = 5.02) with a median of 23 cm, while the mean calf circumference was 28.72 cm (SD = 5.15) with a median of 29 cm. The mean serum vitamin D level was 9.78 ng/mL (SD = 4.47) with a median of 7.5 ng/mL. Spearman correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between mid upper arm circumference and calf circumference (r = 0.572; p 0.01), upper arm circumference and vitamin D levels (r = 0.254; p = 0.014), and calf circumference and vitamin D levels ( r = 0.218; p = 0.036). This research shows that there is a significant relationship between vitamin D levels and upper arm and calf circumference in the elderly. Vitamin D deficiency is common in the elderly and plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. Further research is needed to understand the role of vitamin D in preventing muscle loss. Keywords: Calf Circumference, Mid Upper Arm Circumference, Sarkopenia, Vitamin D.  ABSTRAK Peningkatan populasi lanjut usia global meningkatkan risiko sarkopenia, yang dapat mengurangi kemampuan aktivitas.

Abstract

Uric acid is the end product of purine metabolism in the body, generated from the breakdown of purine substances found in certain foods. When uric acid levels in the body exceed normal limits due to excessive production or impaired excretion, uric acid crystals can accumulate in the joints, leading to a condition known as gout. This Community Service initiative aims to enhance understanding among adults regarding the risks of high uric acid levels and preventive efforts through routine screening and health education. The program is structured using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) method to provide comprehensive education on risk factors and prevention, as well as to assess participants' uric acid levels. This initiative emphasizes the importance of a healthy lifestyle and routine examinations as preventive measures, supporting early detection and management of health risks related to uric acid. The continuity of this service activity is expected to improve community quality of life over time.

Abstract

Fasting blood sugar screening is a crucial step in the early detection of metabolic risks, including prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus. This examination is useful for identifying at-risk individuals before clinical symptoms appear. Screening activities are carried out using the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) approach and the Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) tool. The examination was carried out on adult participants, followed by education using leaflets containing information about blood glucose control and the importance of physical activity. A total of 62 participants underwent the examination aged 23–76 years. Most participants were women (74.2%). Fasting blood sugar values ranged from 67.0 to 333.0 mg/dL with a median of 90.0 mg/dL. A total of 75.8% were in the normal category, 16.1% were pre-diabetic, and 8.1% were diabetic. Fasting blood sugar screening revealed a proportion of participants with impaired glucose regulation. These results emphasize the importance of early detection and health education, especially about physical activity which plays a role in increasing insulin sensitivity and lowering blood glucose levels. The combination of screening and education can be a preventive strategy to reduce the risk of diabetes.

Abstract

Hemoglobin and hematocrit examinations serve as important early indicators of hematological status, reflecting the blood’s capacity to transport oxygen. A decrease in these two parameters leads to anemia, which is often undetected due to minimal early symptoms and low awareness to undergo examinations. This activity was carried out using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach, by examining hemoglobin and hematocrit levels in adult participants. Capillary blood samples were analyzed using a portable device at the examination location. Education was delivered through leaflets regarding the importance of iron, vitamin B12, and folate intake to support erythrocyte formation. The examination was attended by 104 participants, the majority of whom were women. The average hemoglobin was recorded as approaching the lower limit of normal values, while hematocrit levels showed wide variations. More than half of the participants were classified as having anemia. This high proportion of anemia highlights the urgent need for targeted nutritional education. Hemoglobin and hematocrit screening proves effective as an early detection tool for hematological disorders. Education that is linked to laboratory findings should be prioritized to promote improved dietary patterns, particularly the consumption of iron-rich foods, vitamin B12, and folate, in order to prevent erythropoietic dysfunction and long-term health complications.

Abstract

Hypertriglyceridemia is a metabolic condition that often occurs in the elderly and contributes greatly to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, heart attack, and acute pancreatitis. This condition often does not show symptoms in the early stages, so regular triglyceride level checks are an important step for early detection. The Community Service Program (PKM) at Panti Werdha Hana aims to increase awareness of the elderly about the importance of early detection of dyslipidemia through blood triglyceride level screening activities. This activity uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach which includes lipid profile examination and educational counseling on risk factors and prevention of hypertriglyceridemia. Of the 76 elderly participants, it was found that 33 people (43.42%) had high triglyceride levels, while 43 people (56.58%) showed normal levels. These results emphasize the importance of routine checks and education to reduce the risk of cardiometabolic disease and support a healthier and more independent quality of life for the elderly.
