Abstract

Abstract. Lullabies play an important role in transmitting cultural values and intergenerational affection. Its essence and practice are realized through ethnoparenting. However, this research is still relatively understudied, especially because it uses comparative analysis. Thru a comparison of the songs "Tak Léla Léla Lédhung" (Javanese) and "Jajang-jajang Uri Aga" (Korean), this study highlights how the values of love, discipline, and spirituality in traditional oral heritage play a role in shaping modern cross-cultural parenting. The main objective is to explore the implications of both lullabies within the context of the ethnoparenting parenting style. The analysis was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method with Peirce's triadic semiotic approach. This approach allowed the researcher to cohesively integrate linguistic, cultural, and psychological perspectives. The analysis results show how both lullabies contain moral values, strengthen emotional bonds, and serve as a medium for cultural transmission. Overall, this research not only contributes to the preservation of oral traditions but also offers a conceptual framework for applying ethnoparenting in the context of modern cross-cultural parenting. This study opens up opportunities for parents to adapt the ethno-parenting values contained in traditional oral heritage into modern parenting practices. Furthermore, this research can be developed to examine the application of ethnoparenting practices in daily life.

Abstract

This study investigates the multimodal representation in the Grade 10 Bahasa Indonesia textbook published under the Kurikulum Merdeka, focusing on how various semiotic modes verbal, visual, typographic, layout, and color are functionally integrated to support meaning-making and student comprehension. Employing a qualitative content analysis method, data were collected through document analysis and analyzed using a multimodal categorization instrument. This instrument classified modes by type, communicative function, and modal integration. The analysis involved identifying modes on selected pages, evaluating the communicative function of each mode, and interpreting the relationships among modes, categorized as complementary, redundant, dominant, or incoherent, to assess cohesion and pedagogical relevance. The results show that visual modes are the most dominant, with typographic and layout features providing emphasis and structural clarity. Complementary relations were most frequent, demonstrating a high degree of synergy between modes in conveying meaning. Instances of redundancy, dominance, or incoherence were minimal but signal areas for improvement. The study concludes that the textbook reflects a pedagogical shift toward multimodal literacy aligned with 21st-century competencies. Practically, the findings inform educators and textbook designers on how to optimize visual-verbal coordination, design layout more coherently, and utilize typography and color meaningfully to foster more inclusive, engaging, and effective language instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the challenges, learning needs, and weaknesses in the intrinsic elements of children’s storybooks written by prospective elementary school teachers. The research employed a mixed methods approach with data collected through questionnaires, interviews, and content analysis. Questionnaires were distributed to 122 students from the Primary School Teacher Education (PGSD) and Islamic Primary School Teacher Education (PGMI) programs to identify challenges and learning needs in writing children’s stories. Interviews were conducted with two lecturers teaching children’s literature to explore their perspectives on students’ difficulties. In addition, a content analysis was carried out on 13 student works, consisting of nine children’s storybooks and four educational books, to examine weaknesses in intrinsic elements. Data were analyzed descriptively through triangulation of survey, interview, and content analysis results. The findings reveal that the main challenges lie in narrative perspective (49.18%), plot development (39.35%), and characterisation (36.89%). In terms of learning needs, students require more training in language use (34.43%) and the development of creative originality (31.15%). The content analysis supports these findings, showing narrative weaknesses such as abrupt resolutions, static characters, and the use of unimaginative and non-contextual language. These results highlight the need for a more contextual, practical, and child-literacy-oriented model of story-writing instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to map the narrative structure, identify social values and functions, and link the findings to the context of the Baridin–Ratminah folktale from Cirebon in order to produce recommendations for local culture-based teaching materials in higher education. The study used a qualitative method with a directed literature review design. Data were collected through a review of various written sources, ethnographic documents, and archives of speech performances from scientific repositories and cultural communities. The data collection technique was carried out using the PRISMA criteria-based selection procedure to ensure the relevance of the sources. Data analysis was carried out through three approaches: (1) structural analysis of plot, characters, and motifs using Propp and Todorov's theory; (2) analysis of social values and functions based on the Bascom and Dundes framework; and (3) analysis of the narrative context using Hymes' S–P–E–A–K–I–N–G model. The results show that the Baridin–Ratminah folktale has a consistent narrative pattern with stages of encounter, moral conflict, test of loyalty, and resolution that represent the values of religiosity, loyalty, simplicity, social control, and Cirebon cultural identity. The narrative context within society and digital media has shifted the meaning of the story and opened up opportunities for revitalization through visual media. These findings confirm that the Baridin-Ratminah folktale is worthy of being integrated as teaching material in courses on literary studies, cultural literacy, and the development of local wisdom-based learning media.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the potential of integrating local culture in BIPA materialss through semiotic analysis of the song “Lir-ilir.” Using qualitative descriptive methods and Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis, the song lyrics were examined in this study. This study showed that denotatively, the song “Lir-ilir” describes rural life. Connotatively, the song is an invitation to improve attitude. Mythologically, the song shows the integration of social, cultural, and religious aspects. The song “Lir-ilir” has cultural values that can be internalized in BIPA materials by studying vocabulary, listening, singing, reading the meaning, and transforming the song “Lir-ilir.” This study contributes to the potential internationalization of Indonesian language through a culture-based approach. The research novelties of this study lie in analyzing the semiotics contained in the song “Lir-ilir” and identifying its potential in BIPA materials as a process of internationalizing Indonesian language and culture. The results of this analysis and potential identification are part of the process of internationalizing the Indonesian language and culture. BIPA course institutions and teachers can develop this teaching material design to enrich the reference of teaching materials and BIPA learning methods that meet the needs of BIPA learners.

Abstract

The Javanese people created some batik patterns depicting the human life-cycle, from birth to death. These motifs have high cultural and philosophical value. They are also used in important ceremonies throughout the human life-cycle. This cultural richness can be integrated into BIPA (Indonesian for Foreign Speakers) learning. This study aims to design a strategy for integrating Javanese life-cycle batik into BIPA learning with portfolio writing models. This study employs a descriptive research approach with a qualitative focus. Data for this study was collected through observations at a reputable cultural museum, interviews with guides, documentation of batik motifs and literature on Javanese life-cycle batik. To ensure the validity and credibility of the data, triangulation techniques were employed. The results indicate that the life-cycle batik comprises 16 motifs used in seven traditional ceremonies marking stages of the human life-cycle. This diversity of life-cycle batik can be integrated into BIPA teaching materials using Notion as the medium. These materials cover vocabularies (40 words), as well as listening, speaking, reading and writing, and Indonesian cultural awareness. This study contributes to the development of alternative BIPA teaching materials that integrate culture. Integrating Javanese batik motifs representing the life-cycle into BIPA learning could enhance cross-cultural understanding and contextual language skills.

Abstract

This article studies the dynamic changes of two beautiful women into fearful, monstrous females experienced by characters in Indonesian ghost movies such as Sundelbolong, Setan Sumiati, Kuntilanak, Suster Ngesot from Indonesia. This study argues that the changes into ghost pictures represent the reorientation of the earth into a dreadful, hostile nature. The balance of the condition of the narrative describes the harmonic union of the feminine and the masculine in marriage; the break and the loss of equilibrium indicate the grief, rape, and robbery caused by the separation of the feminine from the masculine and the presence of other masculine invaders. The rape and robbery symbolize the invasion and exploitation, and the rage of ghosts signifies the rage of the earth to the invasion and exploitation of unattended land, nature. Yet, they have different structures when narrating the goal of the ghost returning to the world and being forced back to the underworld. These similar structures are influenced by the cultural and political history of the society in which the story belongs. It also unveils how they (the land) deal with colonialization and exploitation.

Abstract

This study analyzes the short story “Cerita Calon Koruptor” by Galang Gelar Taqwallah as a literary diagnosis of the social pathology of corruption in Indonesia. The study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a sociological literary approach. The primary data is the text of the short story “Cerita Calon Koruptor,” included in the anthology Merah pada Melati, while the secondary data consists of relevant literature. The analysis technique used is close reading across three stages: text reading, coding, and interpretation. This study found three main findings: corruption is depicted as an aspiration that is inherited and normalized across generations; the crisis of honesty is manifested through moral inversion and horizontal political brutality; and rationalization functions as a psychological mechanism that perpetuates the cycle of corruption. These findings underscore the importance of integrating the social pathology framework, which has been more widely used in sociological studies, into Indonesian literary studies as a more comprehensive analytical perspective compared to partial satirical or sociological approaches, and highlight the potential of short stories on corruption as teaching materials to build critical awareness of the normalization of corrupt values.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the main female character in the film Home Sweet Loan based on Naomi Wolf’s liberal feminist principles, which serve as a framework for interpreting the character’s representation, and to examine its implications as literary enrichment material in Indonesian language learning at the senior high school level. The feminist principles are identified through an analysis of the main character’s roles. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method to describe and interpret the meaning of the phenomenon in depth and systematically. The research data consisted of dialogues and scenes involving the main female character in the film Home Sweet Loan (2024). The researcher acted as the primary instrument (human instrument), while data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques. Content analysis was used to examine how the main female character performs various roles in life, which position her in a dual-role context. The findings indicate that the character’s roles can be classified into four domains of life as depicted in the film. From a feminist perspective, these roles reflect the principles of autonomy, equality, and rationality. The main character’s actions represent modern women who strive to determine their own life paths despite operating within a socially gender-biased system. These findings have practical implications for the development of literary enrichment materials in Indonesian language learning at the senior high school level, aligned with the learning outcomes of the Merdeka Curriculum, particularly in fostering students’ critical thinking skills in analyzing gender issues. The film Home Sweet Loan also addresses the limitations of existing literary teaching materials, which are often dominated by patriarchal perspectives, by offering a more contextual and gender-sensitive alternative.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the difficulties students face in developing quality children's story writing skills, particularly in relation to emotional literacy and content suitability for children's psychological development. Writing children's stories requires writers to not only master narrative techniques but also the ability to manage and reflect emotions effectively so that their writing can touch and be relevant to children. The main objective of this study is to identify the difficulties experienced by students majoring in Primary School Teacher Education (PGSD) in writing children's stories in this context and to analyse the role of emotional literacy in improving the quality of their writing. This study uses a qualitative approach involving three classes of fourth-year students as samples. Data collection was conducted through surveys, interviews, and observations of the writing process. The results of the study show that students face challenges in two main aspects: first, difficulty in choosing ideas and themes that are appropriate for children's cognitive and emotional development stages; second, challenges in integrating story elements (characters, plot, theme) into a cohesive whole. These findings consistently underline the importance of emotional literacy as a determining variable that helps students choose themes and compose stories with the appropriate emotional depth. Therefore, this study recommends the need for a holistic curriculum integration, including comprehensive training in emotional literacy and an in-depth understanding of child development psychology to improve the quality of their writing.
