Abstract

Abstract

Abstract. Lullabies play an important role in transmitting cultural values and intergenerational affection. Its essence and practice are realized through ethnoparenting. However, this research is still relatively understudied, especially because it uses comparative analysis. Thru a comparison of the songs "Tak Léla Léla Lédhung" (Javanese) and "Jajang-jajang Uri Aga" (Korean), this study highlights how the values of love, discipline, and spirituality in traditional oral heritage play a role in shaping modern cross-cultural parenting. The main objective is to explore the implications of both lullabies within the context of the ethnoparenting parenting style. The analysis was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method with Peirce's triadic semiotic approach. This approach allowed the researcher to cohesively integrate linguistic, cultural, and psychological perspectives. The analysis results show how both lullabies contain moral values, strengthen emotional bonds, and serve as a medium for cultural transmission. Overall, this research not only contributes to the preservation of oral traditions but also offers a conceptual framework for applying ethnoparenting in the context of modern cross-cultural parenting. This study opens up opportunities for parents to adapt the ethno-parenting values contained in traditional oral heritage into modern parenting practices. Furthermore, this research can be developed to examine the application of ethnoparenting practices in daily life.

Abstract

This study investigates the multimodal representation in the Grade 10 Bahasa Indonesia textbook published under the Kurikulum Merdeka, focusing on how various semiotic modes verbal, visual, typographic, layout, and color are functionally integrated to support meaning-making and student comprehension. Employing a qualitative content analysis method, data were collected through document analysis and analyzed using a multimodal categorization instrument. This instrument classified modes by type, communicative function, and modal integration. The analysis involved identifying modes on selected pages, evaluating the communicative function of each mode, and interpreting the relationships among modes, categorized as complementary, redundant, dominant, or incoherent, to assess cohesion and pedagogical relevance. The results show that visual modes are the most dominant, with typographic and layout features providing emphasis and structural clarity. Complementary relations were most frequent, demonstrating a high degree of synergy between modes in conveying meaning. Instances of redundancy, dominance, or incoherence were minimal but signal areas for improvement. The study concludes that the textbook reflects a pedagogical shift toward multimodal literacy aligned with 21st-century competencies. Practically, the findings inform educators and textbook designers on how to optimize visual-verbal coordination, design layout more coherently, and utilize typography and color meaningfully to foster more inclusive, engaging, and effective language instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the challenges, learning needs, and weaknesses in the intrinsic elements of children’s storybooks written by prospective elementary school teachers. The research employed a mixed methods approach with data collected through questionnaires, interviews, and content analysis. Questionnaires were distributed to 122 students from the Primary School Teacher Education (PGSD) and Islamic Primary School Teacher Education (PGMI) programs to identify challenges and learning needs in writing children’s stories. Interviews were conducted with two lecturers teaching children’s literature to explore their perspectives on students’ difficulties. In addition, a content analysis was carried out on 13 student works, consisting of nine children’s storybooks and four educational books, to examine weaknesses in intrinsic elements. Data were analyzed descriptively through triangulation of survey, interview, and content analysis results. The findings reveal that the main challenges lie in narrative perspective (49.18%), plot development (39.35%), and characterisation (36.89%). In terms of learning needs, students require more training in language use (34.43%) and the development of creative originality (31.15%). The content analysis supports these findings, showing narrative weaknesses such as abrupt resolutions, static characters, and the use of unimaginative and non-contextual language. These results highlight the need for a more contextual, practical, and child-literacy-oriented model of story-writing instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to map the narrative structure, identify social values and functions, and link the findings to the context of the Baridin–Ratminah folktale from Cirebon in order to produce recommendations for local culture-based teaching materials in higher education. The study used a qualitative method with a directed literature review design. Data were collected through a review of various written sources, ethnographic documents, and archives of speech performances from scientific repositories and cultural communities. The data collection technique was carried out using the PRISMA criteria-based selection procedure to ensure the relevance of the sources. Data analysis was carried out through three approaches: (1) structural analysis of plot, characters, and motifs using Propp and Todorov's theory; (2) analysis of social values and functions based on the Bascom and Dundes framework; and (3) analysis of the narrative context using Hymes' S–P–E–A–K–I–N–G model. The results show that the Baridin–Ratminah folktale has a consistent narrative pattern with stages of encounter, moral conflict, test of loyalty, and resolution that represent the values of religiosity, loyalty, simplicity, social control, and Cirebon cultural identity. The narrative context within society and digital media has shifted the meaning of the story and opened up opportunities for revitalization through visual media. These findings confirm that the Baridin-Ratminah folktale is worthy of being integrated as teaching material in courses on literary studies, cultural literacy, and the development of local wisdom-based learning media.

Abstract

The Grebeg Suran Sedekah Laut tradition, as a form of cultural expression of coastal communities, can serve as a collective medium for preserving local identity and strengthening social solidarity. This study aims to analyze the Grebeg Suran Sedekah Laut tradition through a social dramaturgy approach to reveal the dynamics of social roles, impression management, and social structures reflected in cultural practices. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The theoretical framework used in this study is Goffman's social dramaturgy theory. The participants in this study include community leaders who serve as key informants, fishermen, and the general public in Mirit Sub-district, Kebumen Regency. Data collection techniques include interviews and observations at Wuni Melodi Miritpetikusan Beach, Laguna Lembupurwo Beach, and the Rowo Village river. Research data is analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, & Saldana model, starting from data reduction, analysis, verification, and conclusions. The results of the study indicate that in this tradition, the community acts as social actors who play roles on the cultural stage through ritual processes such as offering ceremonies and communal prayers. There is a division of roles between traditional leaders, fishermen, and the community within a structure that reflects social norms and collective values. Elements such as front stage, back stage, setting, and impression management are clearly present in this tradition, demonstrating that the practice of tradition is not only a spiritual ritual but also a form of social performance that reinforces the values of mutual cooperation, religiosity, and cultural identity of the community. This research enriches the interdisciplinary perspective on oral traditions and underscores the importance of cultural preservation based on local wisdom.

Abstract

The Javanese people created some batik patterns depicting the human life-cycle, from birth to death. These motifs have high cultural and philosophical value. They are also used in important ceremonies throughout the human life-cycle. This cultural richness can be integrated into BIPA (Indonesian for Foreign Speakers) learning. This study aims to design a strategy for integrating Javanese life-cycle batik into BIPA learning with portfolio writing models. This study employs a descriptive research approach with a qualitative focus. Data for this study was collected through observations at a reputable cultural museum, interviews with guides, documentation of batik motifs and literature on Javanese life-cycle batik. To ensure the validity and credibility of the data, triangulation techniques were employed. The results indicate that the life-cycle batik comprises 16 motifs used in seven traditional ceremonies marking stages of the human life-cycle. This diversity of life-cycle batik can be integrated into BIPA teaching materials using Notion as the medium. These materials cover vocabularies (40 words), as well as listening, speaking, reading and writing, and Indonesian cultural awareness. This study contributes to the development of alternative BIPA teaching materials that integrate culture. Integrating Javanese batik motifs representing the life-cycle into BIPA learning could enhance cross-cultural understanding and contextual language skills.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the fading of oral traditions amid modernization, particularly the mantras of the Pandeglang community, which have been viewed solely as ritual texts without literary value. The main problem this research addresses is how the representation of cultural values, power relations, and ideology is manifested in mantras, and how these texts can serve as a medium for critical literacy in secondary education. The purpose of this research is to uncover the linguistic structures, discursive practices, and social contexts that shape the discourse of mantras, while also proposing their use in strengthening cultural literacy in schools. The research uses a critical constructivist paradigm with an interpretive, qualitative approach, drawing on Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis model and discourse ethnography. Data in the form of 11 Sundanese-Banten mantra texts were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and field documentation. The analysis shows that mantras function not only as spiritual means but also as ideological discourses that reproduce the moral, spiritual, and social values of the Pandeglang community. Socially, mantras become a cultural literacy practice that strengthens local identity and power relations. At the same time, pedagogically, they have the potential to become a source of critical literacy learning in high schools. The research conclusion confirms that mantras are performative texts that contain educational, spiritual, and ideological power—a form of local literacy that remains relevant for fostering reflective awareness and cultural identity among the younger generation.
