Abstract

Abstract

Pengembangan biomaterial antibakteri yang berkelanjutan sangat penting untuk kemajuan bioteknologi lingkungan dan meningkatkan pengendalian patogen. Komposit hidrogel berbasis kitin menunjukkan aktivitas antimikroba alami.

Abstract

A QCM (Quartz Crystal Microbalance) can be developed as a humidity sensor with a selective coating material. TiO2 (titanium dioxide) is a metal oxide with several crystal phases: anatase and rutile phases. However, there are few studies on the crystal phase investigation of a TiO2-based humidity sensor. Thus, this study aimed to develop a humidity sensor by functionalizing TiO2 particles with different crystal phases. The coating materials were prepared by ultrasonication. The synthesis was conducted by mixing 7 mL of TTIP (Titanium (IV) Isopropoxide) precursor in ethanol. This solution was stirred for 30 minutes, ultrasonicated, and heated for 16 hours to make a gel. The next step was a calcination process with two different temperatures to produce different crystal phases: 500oC (anatase) and 700oC (rutile). The synthesized powders were analyzed using XRD-SEM and coated onto the surfaces of the QCMs used as the developed sensors. These sensors were tested inside a chamber using a humidity control kit and a frequency counter (humidity levels: 57% to 92%). The results show that the rutile phase has a smaller particle diameter (252.672 nm) than the anatase phase (384.589 nm). The humidity sensing examinations indicate that the anatase-phase sensor has faster response-recovery times (19 seconds and 8 seconds) than the rutile-phase sensor (28 seconds and 50 seconds). It can be concluded that TiO2 particles in the anatase and rutile phases can be functionalized as a high-sensitivity coating material for a QCM humidity sensor.

Abstract

Traditional pastoral counseling often relies on intuition or spiritual experience without a systematic methodological foundation, making it difficult to measure intervention effectiveness and limiting accountability in service. This study aims to explore the importance of scientific thinking in pastoral counseling practice as a means of epistemological integration between psychology and spirituality, to produce reflective and responsible practice. The method employed includes a literature review on counseling theories, scientific epistemology, and pastoral practice, as well as conceptual analysis on the application of scientific methodology in assessment and counseling interventions. The results indicate that applying scientific thinking enables pastoral counselors to evaluate intervention effectiveness objectively, reduce subjective bias, and strengthen professional service. Integrating scientific approaches with spiritual values also allows counselors to facilitate clients’ holistic growth, uniting psychological, social, and spiritual aspects. Thus, an ideal pastoral counselor functions as both a spiritual guide and a reflective scholar grounded in validated data, theory, and experience.

Abstract

One area that requires attention in water quality studies is the estuarine ecosystem. Estuaries are transition zones connecting freshwater and marine waters, thus possessing unique environmental dynamics. However, there is limited information regarding the effect of sea tides in the area on local estuary water quality. Therefore, this study aims to identify the existing relationship between sea tide levels and EC values, using an IoT-based system that is portable, lightweight, and capable of operating in real time. This study was conducted over five days in Senggigi village, Batulayar, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The collected data focused on the EC parameter's water quality levels at different tide levels, which were monitored using the self-developed system. This system was developed using an EC sensor, a microcontroller, and a wireless internet router (for wireless data communication via ThingSpeak.com). This system was also equipped with a pH sensor, a TDS sensor, and a water temperature sensor. The recorded data show that the resulting data are valid and highly accurate, and that the system is ready for examination at the measurement area. The resulting data show that the correlation between tide level and EC value is logarithmic, with a regression coefficient of 0.934. The EC level was about 20.42 – 62.54 mS/cm, depending on the tide level. It can be concluded that the tide level indeed influences the EC parameter in the estuary area. Moreover, TDS plays an important role in regulating EC levels, underscoring the need to systematically measure this parameter in any estuarine water-quality study.

Abstract

Chitosan, a natural biopolymer, has attracted attention for its potential antibacterial properties against a wide range of pathogens. The escalating crisis of antibiotic resistance necessitates the exploration of novel antibacterial agents effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. This study aimed to predict the antibacterial potential of chitosan against Staphylococcus aureus (a Gram-positive bacterium) and Escherichia coli (a Gram-negative bacterium) using a comprehensive in silico approach. Short chitosan oligomers, specifically trimers, were used to ensure computational feasibility and reliable molecular docking, as full-length polymers are too large for standard docking algorithms. Molecular docking simulations were performed using AutoDock to investigate the interactions between 13 chitosan compounds and the essential bacterial protein DNA gyrase, a key enzyme involved in DNA replication and repair. Binding affinities, interaction patterns (such as hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic contacts), and conformational changes were analyzed. The ligand showing the most favorable docking profile was further evaluated via molecular dynamics simulations using OpenMMDL to assess the stability of the complex over time. The results indicated that the chitosan derivatives, namely aminoethyl chitosan and dimethylaminoethyl chitosan, interact favorably with DNA gyrase in S. aureus and E. coli, respectively, with differential binding energies and interaction modes suggesting potential variations in inhibitory mechanisms between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. These computational findings support the potential of chitosan as a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent and provide a theoretical framework to guide further in vitro and in vivo validation of chitosan as a novel antibacterial compound.

Abstract

Pearl oyster (Pinctada maxima) aquaculture in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Indonesia, generates underutilized shell waste that may impact coastal environments. This study aimed to convert the Pinctada maxima shell waste into high-value biomaterials, specifically hydroxyapatite (HA) and nano-chitosan, and to characterize their physicochemical properties for potential biomedical applications. HA was synthesized via the wet precipitation method followed by calcination  at 1000 °C and 1100 °C. Concurrently, nano-chitosan was prepared through ionic gelation, investigating the effect of 70% and 80% NaOH alkaline treatments. Characterization of HA using EDX indicated a stable Ca/P molar ratio of  1.68 ± 0.03 (1000°C) and 1.67 ± 0.03 (1100°C), FTIR confirmed the presence of hydroxyl and phosphate groups, and XRD revealed well-defined crystalline structures. For nano-chitosan, particle size analysis (PSA) showed size ranges from 235.55 ± 43.90 up to 2728.58 ± 258.74 nm (70% NaOH) and 20.63 ± 18.04 up to 3525.55 ± 13.06 nm (80% NaOH), with FTIR confirming successful ionic cross-linking. The degree of deacetylation (DD) was found to be high, 81.13 ± 0.03% and 82.65 ± 0.15% respectively, although the XRD patterns indicated a predominantly amorphous structure for the nano-chitosan. These findings suggest that the synthesized HA and nano-chitosan from Pinctada maxima shell waste possess favorable physicochemical characteristics, thus supporting their potential as sustainable materials for various biomedical applications.

Abstract

In Lombok, the traditional process of dyeing woven fabrics primarily involves the use of synthetic dyes, which can contribute to environmental pollution. This study aimed to identify the characteristics of woven yarn and assess the effect of dye solution pH on yarn properties when using teak leaves (Tectona grandis) to produce dye powder through a mechanical thermal method. The thread coloring process comprised mordanting, coloring, and fixation stages, with the assistance of Android applications for color analysis and a Universal Tensile Machine Type RTG-1310 to assess mechanical properties. The results revealed that dyeing yarn with anthocyanin powder from teak leaves yielded a range of colors, including shades of gray, brown, and red. The highest tensile strength observed was 2,664 cN/dtex, and the solution's pH significantly influenced the dominant color, with red being prominent. Notably, optimal tensile strength (1,649 cN/dtex) was achieved at pH six. These findings highlight the potential for producing high-quality cotton threads using different dyeing processes and techniques. The study's insights contribute to both environmental protection and thread quality enhancement in the textile industry

Abstract

Blind or semi-blind people require additional devices or assistants such as a cane or a guide dog to navigate in their daily activities. In robotic or automation technology such as self-driving cars also require knowing objects in front of them accurately. The purpose of this paper is to study the use of stereo cameras as a distance measuring device and to determine the optimal camera configuration and its accuracy. The method used to determine distance is the convolutional neural network (CNN) method based on stereo vision. For training and validation data, we recorded images of a ball in random positions in front of the stereo cameras. This test uses two steps, the first is to recognise the camera object using the CNN method, then the second is to measure the stereovision-based object with an input image of 1350 image pairs. With 160 images used as CNN training data and the remaining 40 images as CNN validation data, the entire dataset is also taken to be used as training data for ball distance. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the model successfully predicted the image with 97% accuracy. The accuracy of the optimal distance measurement results at a distance between cameras of 11 cm is found to be 68.03% within a distance of 1 m, for a distance between cameras of 15 cm is found to be 94.63% within a distance of 2 m, and for a camera distance of 19 cm is found to be 99.61% for a distance of 3 m objects.
